Post Subject: Beading for dummies?
My mum and I want to get into beading, with pretty glass beads and wires and those plier thingies, but we don't know how to do it. I'm wondering if anyone knows of some websites that explain the techniques that we could check out.

Welcome to the site! I'm brand new here too, and I'm still trying to get the hang of things.
tastetherainbow: Take a look online at some of the larger bead shows (Lapidary Journal has a show called Beadfest! in the northeast. I don't know if they do it elsewhere) Sometimes at the larger bead shows there are classes in lampworking (making glass beads) I'd just like to point out that lampworking rules! At the bead shop that I work at we have a lampworking studio, and I recently took my first class. It's totally addictive.

I made two purses out of leftover platinum fake fur I had lying around. I lined one with some black/gold upholstery material. The other one I lined with off white material but made the handle out of braided tulle and then sewed some glass beads on the edge. Both turned out funky and the girls loved them!

This is not a stupid question at all! I am helping some friends get into beading right now. There are many ways to save money too!
You can use clear stretchy elastic, that is only $2 a spool. You can also use the clear fish line, or nylon coated steel. I use the stetchy for bracelets and necklaces, especially ones with lighter weight beads. I love the nylon coated steel, it is very strong (and I am a klutz), and about $6.99/spool. When using the nylon coated steel, I use the .014 or .019 diameter, and crimp beads. For a little while, I put off buying a cimping pliers ($13 or so), and just used a flat pliers ($1 at harware store) and that worked pretty good.
There are so many colors of seed beads, in round, triangle and cube shapes, and they will lend themselves to many projects. They also work very well if you add just a few funky glass beads.
Michael's has an ok bead selection, and they are usually on sale. Hobby Lobby has a better selection, and every month or two they are 1/2 price. I really enjoy bead stores, and the staff is usually very helpful in finding what you might need.

Post Subject: Re: looking for online beading sources
My local bead shop closed up, and their 'site' is well, not all that functional. Anyone have good online sources for pretty and unusual glass beads?
AnnS.
Hi, Ann!
Try these to start with:
Fire Mountain Beads (www.firemountainbeads.com)
Blue Moon Beads (www.bluemoonbeads.com)
About.com's Beadwork section
Also, HGTV (www.hgtv.com) has a lot of great patterns

Thanks, glass princess for posting a link to *my* site! (the last one on the list-I make porcelain beads) *blush* Do we know each other in the bead world?
Melanie,
You probably won't remember me since we spoke briefly while you were holding a class at Miner's Den during - I think - the early part of summer last year. I asked to see some of your work and you let me go through your case. I purchased some of your large and small fairy face beads and some coordinating melon beads. I use to work for Kathleen Robinson of Kollectibles by Kathleen and left after I found out I was pregnant because I couldn't be around the lampworkers. I use to teach lampworking there and make glass beads (use to - getting back into it) as well. I live in Davisburg now and the only bead shop is Firefly Beads which really only sells kits that the owner makes up for earrings, brooches, ornaments, and lampshades... not my thing. :(
Anyway, back to you. I also post occassionally on WC! So I've seen you around. Hehehe :) I really love your tiles too and hope when we remodel the bathroom upstairs to use some of them.

I always buy myself a Christmas present--I did, even when I was married. That way, I know I'll get one gift I really want. This year, I bought myself a leather jacket. A $200 leather jacket that I paid $60 for at JC Penney, so I did good. My kids are grown, and therefore poor, and so I got dollar-store stuff from them--but good dollar-store stuff. My youngest daughter gave me a great picture-hanging kit, my #2 son gave me a tortilla warmer, and my#3 son got a great glass bead pendant with which he's going to make a necklace for me. He knows I love glass beads! My oldest daughter bought me a beautiful new shower curtain, and a new wall clock for my bedroom.
Other than that, Christmas was less than wonderful, since I was sick. New Year's weekend was so much better--no pressure, no more sickness, and 48 hours of The Twilight Zone on the Sci-Fi Channel.

I love stuff like this....and I've so enjoyed reading about all of you!
Name: Patty
Location: Rochester, NY
Age: 42 in years, about 18 in spirit
Married to Cosmo, 2 kids - Scott, 12, and Lizzie, 9
Pets: Beagle named Copper, Goldfish named Sammiel
I don't officially collect any one thing, although I have a really cool collection of buttons, pins and badges that I acquired as a punky wannabe back in the late 70's and early 80's. I seem to acquire a lot of things like books, glassware (I love, love, love depression glass), small appliances (thanks to my hubby, who thinks if it's on sale I'll like it no matter what -- witness my cupboards full of toasters, juicers, various types of hand blenders, bread machines, crockpots, etc.), and craft supplies (I especially love paper and have been known to spend a ridiculous amount on a sheet of hand made paper just because it was so gorgeous; I also really, really like markers!).
Right now, I'm totally immersed in beading. I do mostly seed bead off-loom weaving and make things like necklaces and bracelets. I'm hoping to find the time this year to learn how to make my own glass beads. I also knit, and have been making lots of bead-knitted projects lately. I've tried tons of diffeent crafts in the past, and have been having a grand time trying to incorporate some of those crafts into my beading. For instance, I recently made a funky pair of earrings using miniature pieces of kirigami. I've also lately been playing around with encaustic painting.
Lots of readers here, and you can count me as one of 'em. I read to unwind, and tend to favor light mysteries and fantasy.
My family and I spend a lot of time in Northern New York, and my dream is to live there year-round some day. The whole pace of life is different there.

Hi, I'm Kathryn and I live in NC. I live with my sweet husband, an obese cat with a fake eye and two froggies. I think i am more of a crafter than I really am! There's always hope. I love to bead and work with wire and I am seriously thinking about learning lampworking so I can make lovely glass beads. I fiddle around with paper a little too, and I enjoy embroidery. I would love to be better at drawing and am working on it.
