Post Subject: Submission call for Knit Graffiti Book
Submission Call – Knit Graffiti Book
In the hands of guerrilla street artists, yarn graffiti snakes around telephone posts, through barbed wire fences, and over abandoned cars. Originally created by a crew in Texas, knit graffiti has become an international movement embraced by crafters of all ages and nationalities. Yarn Bombing: The Art of Knit Graffiti is a book about the history of yarn graffiti in urban spaces and future plans for world yarn domination, and will teach knitters how they can join the revolution.
Are you a knitter or crochetier? Do you design (or want to design) unusual pieces of street art out of yarn?
If so, you should design a pattern for Yarn Bombing: The Art of Knit Graffiti, to be published by Arsenal Pulp Press in fall 2009.
A DIY guide to the art of yarn graffiti and a history of hand-crafted textile street art, Yarn-Bombing will feature patterns such as street-smart disguises, useful wearable tools like gloves and tool belts, street art such as knit car cozies, bike covers and headlight toques, and outdoor installations such as crochet shawls for leafy trees. The sky’s the limit as long as it’s knit or crocheted! Projects should be fun, colorful and a little bit wacky.
Designers are asked to submit a sketch and detailed description of their project, along with a brief bio, by the submission deadline of May 30, 2008.
There is no entry fee, and you are encouraged to submit multiple designs. Please include your complete contact information (email and mailing addresses) with your submission. Hard-copy submissions will not be returned unless an SASE or International Mailing Coupon is provided.
Digital sketches (under 2MB) can be emailed to mandy@yarnbombing.com, or hard copy sketches can be mailed to:
Leanne Prain
203-884 Bute Street
Vancouver, BC
Canada V6E 1Y5
You will be notified via email if your design has been selected for publication. Selected designs will need to be knit or crocheted by their designers over the months of June-August, and mailed to the publisher for photography and editing by August 30, 2008. Patterns and any accompanying diagrams must be mailed to mandy@yarnbombing.com by the same date. Designers who are chosen to participate will receive the yarn necessary to complete their project, an honorarium, a free copy of the book, and credit for taking part in the book.
For more information, please visit Arsenal Pulp Press (arsenalpulp.com) or the Yarn Bombing Blog (yarnbombing.com).
If you have any questions or concerns regarding submissions, please contact Leanne (leanne@yarnbombing.com) or Mandy (mandy@yarnbombing.com)

Post Subject: hand painted ceramic cups
this may not go in this catagory but I am a huge fan of teas and I am looking for someone who handpaints (and sells) ceramic cups or mugs. There's just something more relaxing about drinking organic teas from a hand crafted or handpainted mug and plus i'd rather support a craftista then pottery barn.
Suzy Poodle Boutique is my new Rubylane store with focus on my indie designed jewelry made from art clay silver, wire and beads. I also have a selection of vintage collectible handbags and lucite items. soon to be added, indie hand crafted handbags and felted scarves.
Any observations or critiques would be greatly appreciated, suggestions etc.

Post Subject: AD: Hand made buttons (Sewing) Primitive Style
I make hand made buttons mainly in the primitive or folk art style. Some of my buttons are hand painted, some use graphics. I am trying different shapes and materials (wood, plastic, resin etc.). These are (I think) quite unique and would appeal to people that like to make penny rugs or even hand crafted dolls. I'd be interested in hearing what you think.

I suggest going to Etsy.com there are a lot of people who hand dye and even spin their own yarn there. The cool thing about it is that all of the yarn is either one of a kind, or very limited in quantity due to its hand-crafted nature. You could posibly do a custom order and even make a new friend =] I don't buy yarn myself, but Im sure there is someone who sells for a decent price, and if you're lucky you can find someone getting rid of some of their unused or slightly used yarn in bulk and for really cheap! Best of luck to you

As purple glitter mentioned, my big concern is allergies. Anything silver-plated will ultimately make my skin turn green, so I would not purchase a non-sterling piece.
Wierd skin things aside, I think it is a sign of quality. For something unique and hand-crafted - I would be looking for nicer materials and would expect you to charge a "premium" price for your skils and labor. If someone wants the look for less, they can go to Claire's.

I have to say that I started on my Christmas projects...way back in January! This year I want to have a totally hand crafted Christmas, and I decided that rather than leave them and feel rushed, I would take time over the year to really enjoy knitting, sewing, crocheting, gluing sticking and crafting!
This is the first time I have admitted to this one in public!

Post Subject: Old Skool Frugalista
I am the self-appointed Queen of Frugalistas.
My mom was a single mom before it was Kool( 60's and 70's) and there was no such thing as subsidized child care. To qualify for food stamps or welfare, you had to be Third World. My mom, a Vietnam-era Army nurse, put herself through both BSN and MSN programs, bought her own house, and educated me in private prep school and college. Herself.
A farm girl, Mom taught me to cook/bake, sew, garden, and re-do, recycle, reuse. More than occasionally broke, we never felt poor. My mom always held that "Broke is Temporary Situation; Poor is Permanent Mind Set."
The key to successful Frugality/Thriftiness is creativity. Creativity to figure out how make the most of a little... not much...or nothing. Sleight of hand with resources. And always make whatever you do at least as fabulous as the $$$ store- bought.
1. Planning. I know. I hate it, too. Necessary evil. Just as you plan a craft project, plan out meals to fit both budget and schedule. Make your grocery lists/meals based on what's in season and what's on sale. Write your plan out and post it on the fridge, or where ever. Incorporate leftovers to be remade into delicacies..or pack for lunches/freeze for quick meals.Which is yummier: homemade bread with a crock pot meal and simple salad or $$$ frozen "meal" with squishy grocery store white bread? Homemade brownies or dry grocery store cookies laden with trans-fats?
2. Do not do all grocery/food shopping at one store! Utilize farmer's markets when you can. Buy local as much as possible. Make an excel spreadsheet comparing the prices of most frequently purchased at several stores. That way, you'll know when it's a real sale and to stock up. Be creative! Target is launching a grocery line, so many items price pointed to be cheap. Aldi is my personal fav. Don't be afraid to cherry-pick the select items on sale. Bonus if coupons! Ethnic grocery stores are a great source of spices, rices, nuts, teas, etc., as waaaay cheaper! Container gardening is a great resource for apartment dwellers with no yard. A pantry and freezer will save your butt every time, so it's a Wise One who uses both. Even the bitty apartment sized appliances can be used to bulk cook a soup to freeze or flash freeze summer fruits ( pm me for how) to use in winter. Muffins made with real berries are a lovely pick me up in January.
3. Public Library.
4. Have a Goal. Not some elusive, obtuse "saving money", but a specific set amount each month. Or plan to make a specific more than the minimum payment on a debt. It's easy! I always pay more than my mortgage and escrow amount. Not a huge amount, but even $30 each month reduces the principal and life of the loan. I make double (or triple in lush months) car payments. Amortize out how much that latte or beer out with friends costs vs. having the same at home: Hourly wage/salary- 30%(average taxes)= final take home. Divide final take home by hours worked, minus transportation/costs of working. I can buy superior Equal Exchange coffee beans and grind/brew my own for a few pennies/cup. Hide the credit cards and Debit only. Cash In. Cash Out. No interest charges or late fees.
5. Change Social Circles. I know, it's hard. Hanging with the Spendies is self-defeating and dangerous to your goals. Takes a Big Girl or Boy to say, 'I can't afford to_____right now." And who really wants to Spoil All the Fun? Invest your time and self-limited resources where you'll get the biggest bang for your buck. That will be different for each Frugalite. Fellow Frugalites will enjoy homemade banana bread tea with at home craft night. Beer and pot luck backyard parties are always more fun. Frugalites will appreciate hand crafted gifts more so than Spendies.
This is just a bit. May add more, later depending on interest.
