i'm having a lot of trouble promoting my site. i try to use LJ but it seems most LJ people (or the communities i use) don't believe in buying handmade crafts but for the smallest price, much less than the labor and sometimes even less than the materials. it's really disheartening to me. i haven't really accumulated enough money to advertise via magazines. venus zine really hounded after me to advertise with them, which i was appreciative of. they took an active interest in my site and even offered me a discount but i still could not afford it. if you have the money, i recommend advertising with venus zine or bust or bitch... there are numerous magazines that offer advertising for more diy companies.

I'm fine with re-gifting, but I realize some people are touchy about it. As long as you regift the item to someone who has no idea that it was originally gifted to you and that the original gifter won't find out about it.
Personal gifts like handmade crafts make it more difficult and in those situations I usually end up keeping whatever it is because I feel guilty.
I make it easy for all my giftees: I attach a gift receipt to the present so that they can just take it back if they don't want it and not even have to worry about regifting, much less letting me know.

i take the train from new brunswick to new york pretty frequently, and have so found a bunch of places i regularly go (most downtown, near the village)
I ALWAYS go shopping in Union Square, usually start off with lunch at Gobo (vegetarian, delicious, and very inexpensive). Union square has street fairs on the weekend in the spring/summer/fall, with a lot of handmade crafts and delicious food. Theres a Whole Foods (good place to stop and get a shake for shopping!), some great shoe stores, American Eagle, Forever 21, Sephora, and a coffee shop thats cool to go in because for some reason the dress code for the servers is to dress really, really fashionably. its inspirational, haha. I like to go to Strand Bookstore, which has inexpensive used books, and great recommendations. Risotteria is a great place in the village to eat for dinner, but its small so you should try to get there earlier. Mood fabric is right near penn station, thats the fabric store they go to on Project Runway so i like to go and see the real deal, and maybe some contestants too (Ive seen Laura .. the pregnant redhead from season 3, on the subway with her husband a few times). madame tousseaus wax museum is really cool, a little expensive but its a fun, one-time splurge i think.
