Post Subject: Life Skills
I am a high school art teacher, and our school does this thing called "Interim Term". During Interim term, students take classes or trips that help further their education... but it is usually something that they can not learn in a typical classroom setting. I am teaching a one week class on life skills - things you wish you knew when you went to college but didn't (for example: how to change a tire, etc). I need some help coming up with some ideas of things that I can do at a school (a private school in the middle of Downtown Dallas) that don't require a lot of expense or supplies (some supplies are ok!). I will be teaching five 2 hour long sessions, so, I was thinking about doing something different every day. Any ideas would be great!

as a teacher of older children (12-18), i like getting gifts to pamper myself. mildly scented luxury lotions, creams, soaps, and antibacterial gels/lotions are always welcome. i know a lot of people don't like the antibacterial products, but when you deal with runny noses, sneezing, and vomiting as often as a teacher does, its essential! remember to keep the scent mild, though, as you never know what the teacher will like.
I am a teacher, too. It's cool that there are so many teachers on this board! I teach high school art, and really wouldn't expect a gift from my students. Their attention in class is gift enough for me. However, I would be careful giving soaps and lotions. I am horribly allergic to scented products, and it would be a shame to spend money on these and then have them sit and never used or regifted. I think the flowers are SUCH a sweet idea!! I have honestly never seen anyone give their student's teachers flowers as a thank you, and I would feel so honored! If we, as teachers, are dreaming here... when I taught pre-school when I was in college, I once had a mom give me a gift card to a movie theater. That was so nice cause it was something fun to do that I don't generally treat myself to.
I would not feel as though you are expected to give a gift! But the thought is so sweet, and the teacher should just be glad you appreciate them!
