i like the concept of budget living, but at the time i subscribed to it, i was broke and looking for ideas that helped me save a little time/money, etc...so it was a huge disappointment in that arena. otherwise, it's great for...party/interior decorating ideas, etc.

I used to get Omni (years ago when it still exsisted), Mother Earth News, Vegitarian tTmes, Organic Gardening and Discover Magazine. I like Scientific America, D.I.Y., Natural Home, Solar, and interior decorating magazines. I just picked up a magazine called "Backwoods" that is pretty exciting.
I have found magazines and books have moved away from helping you to do something for your self and more into how to purchase something else to either give you more info or how to let someone else do things for you. Mother Earth News used to tell you how to do things with actual plans. DIY tells you how to do some things but it is awfully dummed down for the masses. You may get one artical that really excites you but somehow you feel cheated because you spent more on a new magazine than if you bought an older used book on the subject that would have given more plans or information.

I''m Suzanne. I''m 29 and live near San Francisco, CA. I used to be a graduate student at Stanford, but now I have finished my dissertation and they booted me out (well, they granted me the Ph.D., which is the same more or less). My husband and I are moving to Columbus, OH in about a month and a half, but for now, I am sitting around waiting for my postdoc to begin.
I am not super duper crafty--the things I make often turn out a little clumsy. So i joined this site in hopes of getting better. I do love to cook and bake, especially when I can experiment with new flavors or techniques. And I like to sew, even though I am no good at it. It took me 4 years to finish a quilt--I call it my grad-school quilt because I worked on it so intermittently throughout writing. My newest craft crush is furniture/interior design. My husband and i bought a headboard and foot board from the Crate and Barrel outlet store in berkeley, but it was missing rails to put the 2 boards together. So, with the help of my dad, I made my own wooden rails--stained them and everything. It''s not a big deal, but I got excited about doing some more of my own interior decorating and small furniture projects...
Anyhow, I am happy to be here. This looks like a great community
