Post Subject: Extending the life of kids clothing
I have been working on making some of my kid's clothes last through the year by adjusting the season of the clothes and also reconstructing other pieces for the winter season coming.
I have two pieces now online at http://www.randomblogging.com
One piece is a short sleeve polo that i gave a layered look by adding sleeves
http://www.randomblogging.com/articles/2007/10/09/reconstruct-clothing-extending-kids-clothes
And another one is a pair of fleece pants i used to make a warm vest

I will have more as the days go on so keep on checking back. also i am open to any ideas for any of my projects and need some more ideas too!!

Post Subject: Extending the life of kids clothing
I have lots of summer clothes from my older child that i want to hand down to my younger one but it is too cold to wear the summer clothes that he is fitting into right now .. i am now going on a spree of making a seasonal change to these clothes and started with a cute polo and making it long sleeve with a pair of old pants.
see the before and after pics on my site

i personally can't afford to do wholesale orders. i've been told over and over again that my prices are too low. i have 3 consignments going on right now and those seem to work best for me. i've recently given in and raised my prices and i'm still not 100% comfortable with it....i've always wanted to stick with my idea that i want anyone who looks at one of my items that likes it to be able to buy it.
one of my close friends just recently sold a whole line of her kids clothes and bibs and stuff to a store locally as a wholesale order and the store flipped out on her for having her prices on her website be less than what they are selling her stuff for in their store...so! i think it is important to be consistent with prices.
wholesale is hard for handmade items if you don't price gouge.

Not only is the quality of many kids' clothes poor, the designs are icky -- especially for girls. For the last six months or so, I've been creating altered clothes for my kids -- shirts mainly -- purchasing either solid or very simple shirts and embellishing them in ways that speak to my kids' interests.
I've got some photos up on my blog at http://www.the-wild-rumpus.blogspot.com

Post Subject: Poor quality kids clothes...
I was digging through some bins for baby clothes.... at a local thrift shop... and I was disgusted by how pilly everything was...even clothes from the gap...(which I don't consider "cheap" but I guess they are expensive in price (to me) and cheap in quality... I did manage to find two cute dresses..and a watermelon print old-navy pajama set... It is just unbelievable the disposability factor of baby clothes!! You know they weren't able to wear the t-shirt for very long.. and everything was Trashed!! The good thing about buying used is you know how it is going to look once it has been washed a few times.... but really we are getting ripped off by the manufacturers of kids clothes...

Lash out on a breastfeeding pillow! I use mine at almost every feed and it helps me relax because it makes holding Clio during the feed so comfortable.
This is probably not something you are thinking of right now but try not to spend too much money on clothes! I was about to buy Clio an expensive (for kids clothes), very cute t-shirt until we started solids. Carrot stains! I'm sticking to the inexpensive (still cute) stuff. :-)
You must have had your baby by now! So congratulations!

Post Subject: What if your husband doesn't support your business venture??
For my entire life, I have always sewed. All my clothes, kids clothes, entire wedding ensembles, home decor, quilts, you name it. Not the my-mommy-made-this type of sewing, but, as a perfectionist, I have always been determined to create stuff that was better quality than anything made in the store. Its an obsession, and I'm my worst critic. I absolutely LOVE it! I could live at my machine all day.
I would like to start a business, but I need space to be able to set up where the kids can't grab pure white $50/yard silk with their grubby hands as I sew at the kitchen table--its happened!!!! We have NO space inside our home.
Commercial space would cost $400/month, or a work shed placed in the yard would be $3000 for a one-time purchase that I could finish myself. My husband doesn't want to spend the money; he thinks that I'm too old (I'm 35) to start a business and be sucessful enough to be profitable before we retire....
Keep in mind that he won't even look at my business plan, website layout, or even talk to people I have made stuff for over the years, even his own aunt who paid me $100 for 2 hat, scarf, and glove sets a few months ago. My profit margin is about 60%. According to my local SBA office, that's pretty good, right? Last fall I took a complete entrepreneur course at the local community college that was sponsored by the SBA. I know what to do, and how to go about it, I just feel discouraged by his negativity. He thinks I should just go to school and be a nurse because I'll have guarenteed good income in 2 years, and with sewing he thinks I'll just be costing him money.
I don't want to go against him and take out a loan on my own to do what I need. How do I get him to be more supportive?

I love it. The only reason I saw the inside of a mall at all this year was because I couldn't find some very specific shoes for my daughter for a wedding (Hah! But even then I found them on bottom dollar clearance!)
I don't stop at thrift stores, I also love freecycle and craigslist. Up in Alaska there was a Value Village that I dubbed "the rich one" because there were always designer brands to be had. I found my first pair of Dansko blue clogs (the coveted blue suede ones) there and could always find designer kids clothes. Here in Colorado, it's a little harder but I'm slowly figuring outwhich ones have the "better" selections. I even found one up in Denver that ALWAYS has good stuff.
It's an art, I don't frequent the junky divy ones but with the others I think I've reached the status where the cashiers say "Oh what did Crazy Chipper Lady" get today??
