I don't have any children of my own, but my brother has a two year old daughter who absolutely loves Tupac and Ice Cube, granted it's not childrens music, and he doesn't play the songs that are too bad, but one or two from each album. When she was just learning to balance herself by hanging on to the coffee table, she'd shake her little bum to Outkast's Bombs Over Bhagdad.
Growing up I had one record that was kids music and that was Sessame Street Fever, everything else was Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper and tons of other classic rock. I'd suggest just making a mix tape or CD for them so you can ensure that there isn't any objectional language, plus give them a wide range of styles to try out to decide if they like it or not.. Soundtracks to kids movies are great too, the Shrek soundtrack was awesome because it was kid friendly plus adults wouldn't mind too terribly listening to it too. But I'm not a very good influence musically for kids, years ago I had my 5 year old cousin singing Where Eagles Dare by The Misfits, that was a great surprise when she sang it for the whole family over x-mass dinner...

not sure if anyone recommended these or not yet, but "you are my flower" and "you are my sunshine" are the BEST kids' music i have ever heard. they are folky songs...not annoying like most kids music is. they're known for parents loving the music as well as the kids. i have both cds and love them.
you can listen to excerpts here: http://www.youaremyflower.org/home.html

When my kids were toddlers and preschoolers, we wore out the Barenaked Ladies. They had "If I had a $1,000,000" memorized to a T!
If I can get my iTunes recovered from backing up my computer before for the hard drive crashed, i'll post some playlists.
And while I know you didn't want kids music kids music, here are links to some CDs I love. I have two young teens and an 11 year old, but the still like this music (as long as I don't play it in front of their friends). The songs are by good non-kid artists like Guster, BNL, Sarah Mc., Sixpence NTR, Five for Fighting, Wilco, etc.

anybody have any cds that your kids like that are NOT kids music? i'm in need of some new tunes that they'll like. the only kids cd that i tolderate is dan zanes. i've so far avoided getting them anything else in that genre.
they really like B-52's and we have great dance sessions to them. they also LOVE pizzicato five, bjork, and the sugarcubes. and of course they might be giants (has anyone heard THEIR kids album? i'd be more likely to check that one out....) charlie parker, chili peppers, and primus are great for a rainy day spazz-out session. baby digs stevie wonder, the cure (kiss me kiss me kiss me) and the beatles but the toddler's definitely not a beatles man and isn't thrilled with the other two, either.
any suggestions? i haven't had my finger on the pulse of the new and hip for quite some time and i'm sure they would appreciate some new tunes, too....

years and years ago, i knew the music i was listening to was inappropriate when my five year old brother commented on morrissey's 'lifeguard sleeping, girl drowning': "geez. this is the saddest song ive ever heard!" he was also the only five year old i knew that could sing along to all of depeche mode's B sides.
but seriously, they might be giants is a good recommendation.

now i would see absolutely nothing wrong with any DM b-sides. i was way into DM back in the day. starting in fifth grade, thoughout the hello kitty goth stage and still bust them out whenever the urge comes. which is pretty frequent! (I have a friend who's friend named their son B-Side. seriously. now THAT i would have an issue with.....)
i'm really digging all these suggestions. i just really can't deal with kids music, other than dan zane since it's not too kiddy, though gets a little country for my taste some days. my 10-month old LOVES the counting song. singing it to her will stop any tantrum and get her clapping and weaving.
i just get music stuck in my head WAY too easily, and most kids songs just make me want to check into the looney bin. espscially those hideous disney songs..... they just don't go away. my husband and i will torture each other by humming a bar or two of something that we know we will stick. i prefer to get him with a little "what's new, pussycat (whoaoohoowhoaoohwhoaoh)" my sister just burnt me some REM and david byrne, so we'll be giving those a try soon.
