For your average, run-of-the-mill knit hat, yes, you will need to decrease. For your first hat, I would consult a pattern for how to do the decreases (the hat patterns in Stitch 'n Bitch are nice, straightforward, and simple), but basically you knit in the round for approximately 5.5" and then begin decreasing until you have about 7 or so stitches left. You'll need to switch to double-pointed needles when you find you don't have enough stitches to wrap around the circular needles. Then you cut off your yarn and thread the tail through the remaining stitches, pull tight, and fasten the tail to the inside of the hat.

i'm so glad i'm the first to respond...trust me...if you know the basics (knit and purl) there are a ton of free patterns on the net (trust me I printed off 132 in my first knitting week). The one I am doing now is a easy knit hat and i'm also doing an easy 'first-project raglan pull-over' i can try and dig up the patterns if you'd like

Post Subject: knit hat (chullo) pattern?
I have a friend who promised to make me a chullo (knit hat with ear flaps) and I was wondering if anyone knows of a good pattern? Free is nice, but not necessary if you know of a good one. I want her to make me a nice colorful one with a picture of a dog on it. (Greyhound, actually!) TIA!

I have a store out on etsy, as does my mother. We're getting TONS of traffic, but no sales yet. Well, that's not entirely true. I've sold some stuff but locally and to friends of friends. I haven't had a perfect stranger buy anything through the site yet.
I have a theory that right now only the craft *makers* really know about it, and it'll take some time before the craft *buyers* come around. I hope it works - but really it was fun just setting it up, I don't care if I never sell anything!
my store: http://brandemt.etsy.com
mom's: http://thehappybaglady.etsy.com
I have heard on other forums (glitter) that people are getting sales, so I guess it depends on what people are looking for and if you've got it. Some of my items are more winter-y (hats, ornaments) so I'm not surprised no one wants to purchase a warm knit hat when it's 90° outside.
I am curious about what sells, and if I have any hope of ever selling out there, and wish someone would give me some feedback. But right now the site is set up to only take feedback after ordering I think.

I don't have a link. Actually, I have a request/order. I have been looking to buy a kitty hat. I want a black knit hat with cat ears. The one I want has a pattern in stich n bitch. Unfortunately, I can't knit. I was wondering if any of you know how to knit and if you would want to make me a hat. Of course, I would pay. Email me with prices, etc. Thanks!
