What Amelia said...you just knit into both the front and back of the stitch.
First knit the stitch in the normal way (front) - but don't slip the stitch of the left-hand needle. Instead, stick your right-hand needle behind through the other "leg" of the original stitch and knit through the back loop (ktbl). Then slip it off the left needle as usual.
I find that knitting instructions are often worded more complicated than the steps actually are.

Just hold the tips of the needles apart and move your yarn between them, to the back (to knit) and the front (to purl).
I've found that knitting instructions are often way more complicated than they need to be, so you get caught up in thinking something must be hard to do when it's actually simple.
