Post Subject: Knitting
I just posted a question under freestyle and am new to this web-site. Someone was kind enough to tell to place it under Share a Craft. Here is my dilema. I would like to try and find a verrry EASY knitting pattern for socks. I went in to a yarn/knitting store yeaterday and explained that what I wanted. They weren't very helpful and kinda of snobbish. I have the basics of knitting down, self taught, and can crochet anything. Self taught also. I would love to learn how to do socks. Can anyone out there help me?? Thanks to all that respond.

Yarn overs are fairly simple. Is there a knitting store around? Someone who works in a knitting/yarn store may be able to help you out. I know when I have questions, I just stop by my local yarn store.
Good luck!

Actually, there's a yarn store near me that's really, really mean. They look down their noses at "trendy new knitters" and seemt to think that they should only smile at you if you knit faire isle sweaters on a daily basis. I wouldn't say I boycott them, but I don't generally go there. There's another independent knitting store where everyone is really nice and helpful, and I go there. There's enough negativity in my life without having to worry about whether I'm up to the exacting crafty standards of the people who work at the knitting store.

ooh, that must be a trend - there is a yarn shop in atlanta that has that reputation, where customers leave in tears because of the very nasty attitude of the women who work there. i have not encountered it myself, having only been there four times, mainly for knitting clinics where i know my favorite master knitter will be there to teach me her amazing skills. i wouldn't go out of my way to go there, as there are plenty of other NICE independent yarn stores here.
you would think that they would go out of their way to be nice, huh? i mean, they are relying on us for their livelihoods. why chase us away?

Post Subject: Baltimore Crafters?
I used to scoff at the idea of craftiness coming from a Mom who is the Mother of all crafty ladies. She is a WHIZ--Sews, knits, crochets, Scrap books, paints....Everything, I mean EVERYTHING. I just couldn't stand what she was actually churning out. It was "country kitsch" and I abhored it all. I always critisized her for it, telling her there were much cooler projects out there, and much more creative things she could do with all that talent. The formula stuff she did was the same stuff you could find at JoAnn's. She needed a push in the indie direction. And, frankly, So do I
But, I have the bug!!!! It's in my blood and It's brewing. I live in the Fells Point area of Baltimore and after buying the dream home, I'm finding myself a bit broke with NO CURTINS or Decor! I'm looking to start a circle of Knitters, Stitchers, artists (photography is my art, Yes, *I* have a dark room) and Craftistas who want to get together with funky music, projects and good food. (I've baked for years...and I do Vegan and Vegitarian selections)
You can contact me at lockedupspirit@verizon.net if you're interested. I need some new buddies, too. Oh, and Fells has a great Knitting store.....
jangrl - I never thought of that, thanks! They could get really heavy ...
The ones I want are all packaged up and I like to hold my needles before I buy them AND they are at the grumpy knitting store. I try to get what I need and rush out!

I've never had problems domestically with either wood or plastic needles. Flying internationally is a whole different story, much stricter, and each country has its own rules, so what's OK in a US airport may not be allowed, say, in a German airport.
As for the scissors problem, check out those little round metal things that they sell in the notions section now at places like AC Moore and Michaels that are specially made to cut yarn and thread on airplanes. They even have fancy ones at my knitting store that you can wear as a necklace. I've never taken one on a plane, but supposedly they are TSA approved!

not sure what the laws are for keeping sheep in toronto, but i can't imagine it going that far. i will be super happy if i can commit beyond the potholders stage!
anyhow, i have crocheting in plain english on order, and if my sucky head cold abates i will trek over to the knitting store where i saw the interweave mag and pick that up and choose some possibly feasible projects to ask athos about (thanks for advising offer).
i am excited about a cultivating a new craft addiction, yessir.

hi there!
I live in SD in Carmel Valley. I know at least 3 san diegans who were on the old glitter, monkey_thoughts, vicky vale and alomara. We should do something, I'm just frigtfully bad at organizing and then having the motivation to follow through, unless it's a specific one on one meeting, then i've never flaked.
As for local shops, i know the black bead in OB has some pretty cool beads, i haven't found a great knitting store, the needlework cottage in PB is a great place for some stuff, I haven't bought there, b/c i was looking for cashmere to fix a sweater and she didn't have the right colors, but she was super friendly and recommended me to other needlework and knitting stores. There are two more needlework stores in la jolla, oddly enough they're across the street from each other!
I went to one and the lady was really friendly about helping me find a matching color in french wool, which she said no one would notice the difference, and I don't think anyone has :)
i think it might be needlework of lajolla or needlecraft, one of them.
Anyhoo, I buy upholstery type fabrics in clairemont mesa at that big fabric store near vons and biglots, and i can't remember the name of it right now, as a bonus there's a krispy kreme (free hot now donuts) and a 99 cents only store there, as well as a michaels.

there are a couple Barbara's Bookstores around Chicagoland...you might want to contact them?:
http://www.barbarasbookstore.com/
...i think the one in Oak Park might be a cool spot because there is a Paper Source and an indie knitting store nearby so there might be a lot of local interest....it's like 20 minutes from Chicago
also, maybe you thought of this already, but repotdepotfabrics carries that sew fast sew easy book, maybe they would carry yours? good luck! i can't wait to see it!

i love the city quilter on 25th between 6th/7th, closer to 7th, north side of street. obviously it's quilting-specific, but there's great fabric, mettler thread, quality scissors, rotary cutters, rulers, mats, tons of books (i walked out with "stupid sock creatures" the other night, and love it already). thimbles, embroidery thread, etc. i also like lee's, and i love pearl paint. then there's a little place that bills itself as an art store on 7th betw. 29th/30th, east side of avenue. but it has a ton of yarn and various craft supplies too. there used to be a hipster yarn/knitting store on bedford ave. around s. 4th or so, but i don't know if it's still there.
