Post Subject: New, sort of.
I had actually registered quite a while ago, but never really introduced myself. I've browsed blogs, been inspired, intimidated, and encouraged. Same here at the forums. I've crocheted the longest, then learned to sew - I'm always learning to sew, and am trying to learn to knit. Although normally it feels as though I'm playing swords with myself - and not all that well, either. Still, I press on.
I have 3 children, though only my daughter lives with us full time. I'm married to, well I think the only man on earth who could possibly put up with all my quirks. Never blinks an eye when I claim the kitchen table for weeks of crafting frenzy, never rolls his eyes when I'm dragging a project with me where ever we go for weeks on end - he drives, so travel time to me is the gift of crafting time :-)
I guess that's about it for me right now.

Post Subject: Any craft ideas?
Hey there.
My name is Christa and I have a bit of a dilemma. I consider myself a crafty person but can''t seem to figure out what to do in this case. Im leaving to study abroad in France for a year this August and want to give something special to my parents and boyfriend before I go. Something made by me (or at least partly) that will show them how much I care about them and will miss them. I had some art ideas but Im running out of time to get the projects done and I don''t think their that memorable. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Im just learning to sew so I dont think anything of that kind would be the best, but Im open for any ideas. Thank you so muchh!!!

Post Subject: learning to sew
I'm just now learning to sew. I want to make some cloth totes to sell this summer when i set up at Shipshewana. Does any one have any advice, patterns, or ideas for me? Even ideas of other simple useful things I could sew as a beginner.
Thanks!
PS I'm new to this forum but it seems like a really great place!

Congratulations on learning to sew! I'm sure by now youve been able to find tote patterns online. There are a ton of instructions on the net for all kind of bags.
My mom is a native of Elkhart, Ind. When we drive back from Chicago, where my sister lives, we stop in Goshen to visit w/ my aunt and cousin. Afterwards, if we have time, I like to stop in Shipshewana to browse before driving back East. One of my favorite stops is always to the ice cream shop, where they have someone making the huge home made pretzels! MMMMMM!!! 100 times better tasting than those pretzels sold at the malls!
Is there a coop of some sort where you will set up your stuff to sell?

Of course it is worth learning to sew if you are not an "average" size. I'm less than 5 foot, and knowing how to sew has allowed me to alter off the rack items and make anything else I want. There is also a terrific book out called "Life is not a dress size" that is about sewing for plus sizes. It is very helpful. Try borrowing a sewing machine from a friend, to see if you'll like sewing before you make the investment. And start with a simple pattern, like pillows or the skirt featured in the "Get Crafty" book. Sewing will allow you to wear exactly what you want, not just what some faceless designer or clothing buyer says you should. And have fun with it!

Post Subject: Sewing Question
I am slowly learning to sew. I have figured out a lot of great stuff- but I continue to struggle with one problem. I cannot keep two pieces of fabric lined up correctly when I run them through the sewing machine. One always moves ahead of the other- and then to match them at the end of a seam I have to bunch it together. I have looked around online at sewing FAQs and sewing basics...but can't seem to find help on this.

Thanx for all the wonderful ideas. I believe I will make the first step towards learning to sew. I'm sure that will open the doors to another world of possibilities.

Yes, Singer still uses plastic parts. That is why you can get one for $50. When I was shopping for mine (I have a used Jenome, which I love), the service man who sold me mine told me that the new Singers have a life expectancy of about 2 years, and the parts can not be replaced. Basically, they are like disposable machines. I guess it would be good for someone to learn on, to find out if they like sewing or not without spending too much.
My mother-in-law has a high end Bernina and she adores it. She has had it for about 15 years now and wouldn't let me touch it when I was learning to sew because she loves it so much (understandable).
I also have a Singer feather-weight (really really old) that still works but needs to be oiled and adjusted. I can not find anyone near me who does sewing machine repair, so, I will probably have to take it on a very long journey next time I visit my in laws to their sewing machine shop. It was a gift from a friend of my grandmother's who didn't have room for it anymore. I was very excited.

I have a lot of early crafty memories because my mom is really crafty.
I loved it when I was about seven and my mom, my younger sister and I made paper dolls of ourselves. My mom drew the dolls (of us) and we all made clothes. I got frustrated because I couldn't draw as well as my mom.
My mom got us those little easy-bake cake pans but we just made real cake batter and made little cakes in the real oven.
Making a cloth doll when I was about 12 -- I embroidered the face, sewed the doll, and sewed the yarn hair in.
Learning to sew (age 10?) and making pillows for a first project.
Helping my mom make quilts for family members -- sewing blocks together and ironing the seams flat. Decorating blocks with fabric paint.

I buy re-ment for my dolls at Japanese markets. My Blythes love their re-ment!! you can find stuff at www.thisisblythe.com, and that is where I got my new girl, Enchanted Petal.
I am learning to sew for my dolls, too. I used the a-line pattern here - http://www.puchicollective.com/ .

Hi!
Thanks! I've since then gone head over heels for Blythe! :) I've started buying Re-ment from hlj.com by the case. :P Am I addicted or what?
I notice from your profile that you're in Athens. We're having a Blythe meet in Atlanta in February if you're interested. If you are, look in the Gatherings section of TIB.
Later!
Linda
P.S. I just realized why your site URL looked so familiar! I've probably seen you at ICE before! My friend bought me one of your oranges for Christmas. :)

Post Subject: How did I start
I started because no one wanted to teach me to do the things they did. My grandmother could sew her butt off. I mean anything you could name, she could sew it. My mother became a knitter briefly but never had the patience to teach me either.
So, I started out teaching myself how to knit from following instructions in a book. Then I moved on to crocheting. Now I am learning to sew and am in the intermediate level. A good resource for you to learn how to sew is a website called: www.youcanmakeit.com. I love the course and I hope you like it as well.

Post Subject: Re: daily update
Wearing: light green t-shirt, jeans, new pink bra that's driving me crazy, socks w/ a hole in them (i need new socks)
Make-up: foundation, brown/gray eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara
Hair: blow drying it right now. always wear it down and straight
Last ate: a life saver mint thingy
Listening to: the tv in the other room
Mood: just here. not great, not bad, just ............. heh
Craving: Shopping. But there's nothing I need (except socks!) so ...eh.
Reading: halfway through the latest issue of Bitch magazine, and still trying to finish The Plague that I've been reading for 6 months! I'm never this bad about reading, I usually read a book a week. Ugh.
Watching: nothing now. I need to catch up on our movies and tv shows on DVD though, so I may start on one of those when I get off the computer
Going: I want to go see a movie, but I hate seeing movies on the weekend - especially the opening night. I might go out to craft stores and Target type stores later on. Dunno if I want to risk bookstores tonight w/ the Harry Potter parties going on ;)
Thinking: I'm so glad to be off work (essentially...4 hrs tomorrow doesn't count) for three days.
Doing: finishing up getting ready (crap it's 3pm...) getting some inspiration from craft websites.
Planning: to work on some more of my projects. I promised myself NOT to start anything new until I'm down to two projects. Because I have to do a few at a time so when I get burnt out on one, I'm not just wasting time and getting nothing done, I just go on to another one. But right now I have a cross-stitch going, a latch hook rose, mosaics, embroidery, learning to knit, learning to sew, collage, card making. I'm going to explode! hehe.

- I hate people who can't turn their cellphones off.
- I hate people who ask "Where were you?" when you don't have your cellphone on all day.
- I hate the "I'm not racist but" too!
- I hate people who talk about their dogs and kids all day too!
- I hate people who pay for pedigree animals when hundreds are dying for a home at shelters, and then boast everywhere that they payed 300 euros for their dog and look at my one-eyed dog as if I was crazy to pick up an animal who was dying of starvation in the street.
- I hate people who complain all day about their incredibly bad luck and lack of opportunities and see themselves as victims.
- I hate people who are all day telling who they f****d with.
- I hate people who think my husband is stupid because he cleans and cooks and he is even learning to sew.
- I hate women who think that finding a husband is the most important thing you can do with your life.
- I hate people who feel nothing in front of a Gustav Klimt (for instance, put there any other artist) painting. I also hate snobs who think that everything that is overpriced is art. I also hate people who overprice their art.
- I REALLY hate people who think that because you're a down-to-earth, approachable person you can't hold a good philosophy discussion or that you can't listen to Danzig while you do crochet.
