I went to an art school and then to a tech media arts school for interactive and digital design.
The rules are changing a bit. I suggest just jumping in as soon as possible and devoting every ounce of yourself to this if you really want it.
You can get a two year degree and get some experience and you'll be on your way. A 2 year degree with 2 years experience equals about the same as a 4 year degree. In fact I know some design firms that like the experience more than the degree factors.
