Post Subject: Beading on Paper Crafts?
My roommate's birthday is coming up, and she's just started learning some beading techniques. I know that she wants to use the beads as embellishments on the cards and other paper crafts that she makes. Does anyone know a book I can get her for her birthday that might talk about techniques for doing this?

It is pretty easy. Here is the tutorial http://scrapbooking-paper-crafts.suite101.com/article.cfm/scrabble_memory_collage_easel:

Post Subject: Wash, DC Crafters!!
Are you a craft diva with a flair for teaching? If so, lets talk. I am in the beginning phases of opening a sewing and craft school and craft supply boutique in Washington, DC. As i develop my business plan, i'd like to begin relationships with teachers that i will eventually hire as independent contractors to teach various classes at my lounge. I am interested in those with experience teaching crochet, knitting, sewing, embroidery/cross-stitch, quilting, paper crafts (including scapbooking and stamping), home dec, and any other unique craft. For my plan, i will need to have a list of qualified instructors and their expected fee per class. This is a good opportunity for up-and-coming designers or expert crafters with a talent for teaching. Unique crafters encouraged and photos of work are appreciated. Shoot me an email if you are interested or if you'd like more info.

I would think you could use them on fabric as well as paper crafts. Might be a cuteway to embellish a flap or pocket on a denim bag (or any sturdy-ish fabric). More or less bedazzling things without a Bedazzler.
Attaching cards to ribbons on wrapped packages?
Add a decorative border to a corkboard? They wouldn't work as thumbtacks, but you could still shove them into the board.
Obviously you could use them for papercrafts. If you are burned out on cardmaking or scrapbooking, what about collage or a different type of project? Do you have kids? Could you use them to seal paper lunchbags?

I live in North Berkeley. I have been wanting to join a craft group for quite some time. I do not knit, & most groups main focus is knitting--so I have trouble finding groups. I am willing to host a few meet ups at my house. I sew alot! and do some paper crafts, coasters, etc.... But mostly just would like to hang out with some creative people! If you want to start a group I am totally in!!

I have a stack of them, the Stitch n Bitch collection is good, and so are: Super Crafty, Bazare Biare, Get Crafty - Hp Home Ec, Kitschy Crafts, the Craftsters Guide to Nifty, Thrifty, and Kitschy Crafts and the Complete Guide to Paper Crafts. My personal favorite is: Alterna Crafts. The Ready Made book is good though I do not have it in my collection at this time.
I have a few others but they are mostly specific to quilting and knitting.

Hey all,
Im Michelle.
Ive just joined getcrafty in hopes of learning more about jewelry making. And I find it kind of hard to find topics unless i do a specific search for something...
I dont know much of anything, so I really dont know what to search for.
I thought itd be easier for us newbies to find what we are looking for if there were more specific folders for specific crafts, and possibly folders within forlders. For example:
-Jewelry
+glass
+resin
+polymer

To my opinion, it's really hard to keep a clean room when you're into paper crafts. I mean, I hate to dig into a neat pile of papers just to get the one I need. All my papers are segregated into envelopes/folders but I can honestly say that my organization might be the worst system in the world.

I have flat file boxes, one for each color range, that I found at IKEA and I have one box full of tiny scraps of all colors. SO each box is labeled and I just pull out the box I need and put it back on the shelf when I'm done.
For other things like pictures from magazines, decoupage items, and other random bits of paper I use for paper crafts I keep in a 3-ringed binder with plastic sleeves. I try to group like things together, and then I can flip throgh and see everything without making a huge mess.

well, not really...hehe, but I made enough noise!
I stopped in to get the fall issue of Martha's (doesn't say her name anymore) Kid magazine for ideas for my newest new job teaching arts and crafts. I also picked up a fall and winter edition of Paper&Crafts mag just to get more ideas to work with (as if I don't have enough ideas running through my head at 500 MPH!)
Well, decided to head back to the crafts books to see if there were any new books. Nevermind that i've already checked this section at least 3 times the past 7 days -- you just never know! Scan, scan, scan the shelves and then BOOM! Pam squeals and shouts and giggles a bit too loudly for any store, much less a nice quiet bookstore....
Guess what book made me back that noise?
Jean's book!!!!!! "Get Crafty:Hip Home Ec"
Yes, i'm a dork and easily excited (just like my shih tzu), but I really was excited to see this book. I've been meaning to order it since last week, but I was waiting to do it on my husband's Amazon acccount.
I bet i'll really get kicked out when Jenny Hart's new Stitch Kit comes out and anything more by that Crafty Chica, Kathy Murillo!
okay...back to coming up with what projects I am going to teach for the next week and a half!

My mom taught me some gardening, a little macrame, and how to make a crochet chain with my fingers. I do this unconciously now anytime I have yarn in my hands, it trips people out. My mom did a lot of paper mache and other paper crafts with me. We build birdfeeders with pinecones and peanut butter, that sort of thing. I remember her making playdough and those shinki dinks.
My dad taught me a little about car maintenece, cooking, a lot about cleaning and doing laundry (my mom had no clue, go figure). He was a great photographer and he taught me a lot about photography. His father and grandfather were both photographers too as well as my 2 uncles. I love it as well. I suppose it is ingrained in our genes. I still have some of his cameras.

But none of my friends do crafts similar to what I do - crochet, knit, cross-stitch, felt crafts, paper crafts, etc. I wish they did - it would be fun to share it with them.
But most of my friends are into cooking and use that to express their creativity.

Post Subject: Scrapbooking: can this craft be saved?
I have an embarrassing confession to make. I kind of want to take up scrapbooking. I made scrapbooks as a kid, before "scrapbooking" was a verb, and I enjoyed it. I realized on Christmas Eve, when I went to my friend's house and helped her little girl make ornaments out of construction paper, that I really enjoy paper crafts. And I have huge piles of mementos and various other crap piling up in my bedroom, just begging to be pasted into photo albums. But I associate scrapbooking entirely with, well, everything that is wrong with the universe: cheesiness, commercialization, sentimentality, etc.. Is it possible to redeem the scrapbook? Has anyone tried?

I feel that way too. The frustration with the commercialism and the desire to record memories.
My favorite quilts are the ones that have been made with scraps of old dresses and bits of other outfits - real memories. This carries over to my idea of ideal scrapbooking. Scrapbooking. Buying bits of things in three layers of plastic containers and then taking the paper backing off and sticking it down to the precoordinated page isn't my idea of personalization.
I hear that the premade bits of things you can buy are getting more diverse at least. and a lot of the papers ARE really pretty. But so are old maps, and handmade paper...

I concur with the others that scrapbooking is only as cheesy as you make it - just like any craft.
Yup, what she said!
Growing up, I made scrapbooks in the "old fashioned" sense (meaning, before scrapbooking became a verb and focused on acid-free materials). When the whole scrapbooking thing blossomed into a newer craft w/ a specialized industry, in the 90s(?), my crafty sister-in-law embraced it, while I, though supportive, didn't really relate to the adorable, embellishment-laden style that was so widespread then.
Fast forward to 2003, when I got engaged...I hadn't done anything creative in a few years and scrapbooking started to appeal to me because it combined photos, paper crafts and journaling - things I had always done all my life. But I didn't relate to any of the cute stuff out there. A little more research online revealed that numbers of cool modern women were scrapping, however they wanted to scrap. I finally took the dive in 2005 and I've loved it ever since.
Bottom line is there are no rules unless you want 'em. My style tends to use TONS of pics per page, w/ more design-oriented embellishments, if any, (as opposed to literal objects like stickers representing my subject) & lots of actual memorabilia like ticket stubs. There are legions of scrappers who like to use only 1 photo per layout, and decorate around it; there are scrappers who embrace the cutesy style of yore. Some people take 20 mins to do a page, some take days. . I've been lucky to find some fellow irreverant scrappers online but have bonded w/ so many people who fit that stereotypical "adorable scrapper" style that I was wary of myself when I started, because it's wonderful that everyone's documenting their lives in a style that expresses themselves.
There are things that bug me about the industry and the scrappers I meet online - there's a whole culture of people who are a bit snobby over using the "latest and greatest" products, or who dis Rosie O'Donnell's collage-y scrapbooking because it's not "real scrapbooking" (huh?!) or because she isn't an acid-free freak, there are all sorts of scrap quirks (people who buy & hoard bunches of supplies & don't use them, people who recreate whole events like birthday parties just to scrap them! etc). Whatever! I'm having far too much of a good time to let the bad apples of an entire culture and industry, as well as the stereotypes, get me down.

Hi Betsy: Very cool project. I love that you found a way to merge academic work and crafting. Nice!!
Here's my answers:
1. how did you learn to knit? how old were you then and old are you now?
I learned to knit this year. at age 31. I have been crocheting since about 15 but couldn't get the hang of knitting and finally successfully taught myself.
2. knitting = nesting? is your knitting a way of getting back to simpler times?
It could be, although I don't think I consciously chose it for that reason. But now that I think of it, I didn't learn to knit until after we bought our house.
3. in regards to the current resurgence in knitting, when do you think it started and why?
I think the pace of many of our lives has gotten too frantic, and many find knitting to be soothing and/or meditative. I believe it is often in reaction to info overload.
4. do you have a crafty group that you meet with? how often? why do you dig it?
I don't have a crafty group I meet with in person, although there are 2 stitch -n- bitches in my area I may look into.
5. where do you go online to discuss/learn/share your craftiness? how do these sites inspire you in ways that real life conversations don't?
I am a big participant on this site, for crafty inspiration as well as general advice and venting. I have also grown to love craftster, which has a lot of specific instructions and pictures of projects. There are tons of other crafty sites I have bookmarked, but those are the only 2 I go to regularly.
6. is there a subversive element to knitting? a punk rock element? or simply a DIY smugness?
I couldn't say about the subservice element, since I am a beginner. But it does seem that with the resurgence of knitting, some of the younger knitters want to knit in their own way, and make hipper things than toilet paper cozies. Like, the Stitch -n- Bitch projects have a lot of punk rock-type projects. I have to be honest, in terms of the smugness, I did sense that some of the pattern contributors in the Stitch -n- Bitch book had somewhat of a smug attitude. Like, they'd say things like, "I'd never knitted before and one night I was bored and I created this fabulous intarsia pattern using needles I made out of tuna cans, and knitted it up in one evening, and the rest is history!" Whatever!
7. why do you knit?
It's fun. It's portable. It's relaxing. It's cooler looking than crocheting. I needed a new challenge. I wanted to make my husband a Harry Potter scarf.
8. what other crafty things do you do besides knitting?
I crochet and cross-stitch and embroider and do origami and other paper crafts. I like to make marble magnets and paint stuff. I also create web sites.
9. the future of knitting- is there one or are we just kidding ourselves?
I definitely think there is. People love it to the point of obsession and I'm starting to see why! It's been around so long; I don't see it fading.
10. do you prefer to knit alone or with other people? why?
So far I have knitted mostly while other people around but not with other knitters, because I don't know any. But I like to knit while visiting, I even knit at the movies and concerts.
11. true or false: can craft save us all? (elaboration here would be nice, but not necessary.)
false. I want to think so, but it could only be a small part. Beyond crafting and creativity, what will save us is more tolerance, more social programs, democrats back in the white house, and true equality for women in the workplace. But it's a great part of the picture!

For Thanksgiving last year, I made 'blessing mix' for my family and friends. It's a real cute idea that I got out of Paper Crafts magazine. I'll dig out the instructions and if anyone is interested, let me know.
ditto on the small house, it feels like it is shrinking!!! - now i have to buy yarn on the sly in order not to get in "trouble" for it! :) i have put most of my yarn in a large clear rubbermaid box.
i think i will put my sticks and hooks in a large glass vases according to length/type and current projects in a clear plastic boxes so i can actually be motivated and keep track of them ... i am making a list of them and about how much needs to be done & importance to complete them to give myself a gist of what to do next.
target had a great sale on plastic containers and tried to put all of my different crafts (paper crafts, wood staining, food gift pkgin', fabric, sewin', etc.) in separate boxes, labeled with packing tape that i wrote on with sharpies (i folded one edge over so i can remove it and replace as the contents change)

I picked knitting because it's my favourite craft at the moment. I've only been doing it for two months so I'm in the honeymoon phase. I've been sewing, embroidering, cooking, baking, and making paper crafts for far longer but knitting has proved incredibly addicting. I think the main reason for that is the fact that I can do it in more places. In boring lectures, in front of the TV, on the bus, in waiting rooms. Plus it's super relaxing and incredibly gratifying!

I made 200 lbs of soap for our last show...I'm done for a few months! I'm starting a Family Blanket. I would like to start a bamboo trelis project for the garden. HA we'll see!
Wow, it sounds like you have a lot of interests - very cool! I'm totally floored by the 200 lbs of soap - I hope you sold a lot!
I can't sew or do anything involving thread, fabric, embroidery, etc. but I'm envious of those who can - it's so amazing what people come up with!
I'm basically into altering stuff, paper crafts, collage, card making, rubber stamp art, stuff like that. I'm easily inspired by the things I see that other people have made (on this borad and others) so I'm always trying out new ideas. Right now I'm working on a board book of screen goddesses of the '30's & 40's with pictures I colorized with inks and embossed. Also an Elvis board game, but that one might take a while.
This weekend I worked on an altered AOL tin:
http://www.astaarts.com/craftster/aolt2.gif
and a blinged-up birth control dispenser (it's ok to giggle):
http://www.astaarts.com/craftster/bc3.gif
I just like making stuff - it's such great therapy.
It might be fun at some point to do a swap with each other. Y'know, where we each use our own talents - homemade soap for some homemade paper or a hand-sewn goodie - something like that. Just an idea.
There's a couple gals on another board I'm on that might be interested in getting together, too - Summer is such a crazy time for everyone - but what do you say we try to pull something together for mid-July after the holiday?

Hello Crafty TV,
Have you thought of having some of the 20 - 40's crafters on tv? Like Jean (who owns this site) and CraftyChica & lizzymahoney? (I know there are others in here I cant think of right now....). There are some very creative Generation X crafters - and it would be so much FUN to see them! That I know I would love to see.
Yes, it would be great to see a sewing 101 show like Crafty Chica mentioned - that's a great idea. Other things on needle arts could be interesting. I like to do a lot of paper crafts - decoupage, scrapbooking, watercolor, shrinky dinks etc. :) so I don't know how typical I am.
What is your show called? Do you have a website? :) Abigail

So sad to see that my beloved seed beads are making such a poor showing, but I have to agree with the scrapbooking. I love paper crafts and stickers and all that stuff that's in the scrapbooking section, but much of the actual scrapbooking I've seen is too cutesy for my tastes.
Also, I love looking at lampwork beads, but I can't see myself ever making them. My coordination is such that anything involving a butane torch is probably something I should steer clear of.

Knitting. My evil grandmother knits, my mother (her daughter) crochets. My evil grandmother is always talking about how knitting is so much better than crochet, etc. As a sign of solidarity with my mother, I will only crochet (though I do it sporadically and badly and can only make scarves or wire crochet jewelry).
Seed beads. Love the effect, too impatient. Like the relatively instant gratification of working with regular-sized beads--though I never just string them on a string, I do wire work.
Quilting. I sew clothes. I like clothes.
Ditto on Scrapbooking. My sister scrapbooks, I acknowledge that it makes really nice meaningful albums, but it's too time consuming and not rewarding enough for me. Most of my crafts end up as something to wear (jewelry, sewing, embroidery) or at the very least display (mosaic, watercolor). I'm too much of a show off to put it away in an album. Plus, I'm not great in two dimensions, I like working in three.
Don't have the talent for collage or really most paper crafts.

I'm the opposite! I have absolutely no interest in most paper crafts, collage, stamping, stickers, origami etc. (fear of paper cuts?)
On the other hand, I thought I would hate scrapbooking, but one of the burlesque ladies here in NYC started teaching classes for the other burlesque ladies and she got me hooked (I think learning from a super cool chick removed some of the stigma I had associated with it). Once I got over the "midwestern housewife (no offense)" stereotype, I realized the pages would be as cutesy as I make them (not very). I admit, I did cave in and put a couple flowers on my wedding page (i posted some of the early pages in my photo album a while ago).
I also don't want to die fabric (especially tie die), or do the bead thing - I leave beads to people with better eyesight and more patience, and I can't paint. Also, I do so much carpentry with my job that I don't want to do wood crafts at home, although I would like to start welding again... : ) Oh yeah, and I don't like computer crafts like photo shop or flash (which is funny because I do like computer programming). I just end up clicking frantically and moving the mouse around so much I think the computer is going to blow up.
whew, i'm starting to feel grumpy, I'd better stop!

hi all - alyssa here. i am cinnamongirl (like the song) here and at supernaturale, was lilmissunshine on the old glitter.
single, just turned 27 and living in mass (yay for all the new englanders on here!) and working at a publishing company.
currently i {{heart}} walking and picnicing in the woods, reading all the books on my bookshelves that have gone unread for years, apple scented anything, outdoor concerts, birds as decoration, boys who build things, magic hat #9, the amazing race and being in or on the water.
i am mostly a paper crafts kind of girl - making stationary, collage, journals, etc - also make jewelry and always have big plans to sew my own clothes and finish learning to knit and embroider.

Post Subject: still crazy, after all these years
Hi ladies,
I am an old poster who went MIA for a long time I guess. It's funny, I was reading some of my old posts and I am like, wow, I don't even remember this! (posts from 2003-2004). Anyhow, I'd like to say hi to everybody. To give an update for anybody who remembers me, I am now in Dakar, Senegal doing some 'research' for a 'dissertation.' I recently got married. I miss doing crafts, horribly, actually. But eventually I'll go back to Chi-town. I am now available for any advice you need re: living in West Africa.
Um, interests and crafts: sewing, embroidery, basically all textile crafts (knitting, crochet, handspinning, handweaving). Paper crafts esp. printing/letter press. The 'craft' of qualitative research (heh).
Hi again to all my ladies,
I've really missed Glitter, wonder who's still here.

Hi, I was BionicGirl on glitter too, but I didn't post too often there (it always seemed so... big). I'm in Austin, and I live with 2 cute boys (okay, one of them is only 1-yr-old, but still). I like art, outdoorsy stuff, food, smart & funny things, history... oh, and making things! I am pretty craft A.D.D. and tend to have a lot of projects of any variety going on at once. I like paper crafts a lot, especially book-making (which I am still learning). I am a Web designer so I tend to use the computer for a lot of stuff, scanning in images & reprinting en masse, designing cards and what not. Basically, if I see something I want or think looks cool or pretty I will try to make it. I do some jewelry work and a little bit of sewing (though not clothes as of yet!). I do a heck of a lot of fixing up the house (and the yard will be next). I want to start doing some embroidery too.

Hello!
My name is Abby and I am new to the forum. :)
I love crafts. I like to do decoupage a lot, make Christmas ornaments, and I teach gift wrap. I am learning how to make scrapbooks - mine are very very basic if you looked at them. I love mostly the paper crafts. I knit when I have insomnia, which means I have this big long thing that could be like a nine foot long scarf if I ever tied it off, which I haven't.
I am a graduate student and will complete my degree in August. Crafting is a fun way to relieve stress and a lot of my friends do some kind of craft.
I drink coffee every morning, green tea, diet soda every day -- way, way too much caffeine for the typical person. But I guess that's the usual graduate student! I love to read - biographies, chick lit, even romance novels if they aren't too sappy. I love independent movies, yoga and vegetarian cooking.
Well, that's me and I look forward to meeting all of you!

who are you? Hello Ladies! EarthTones here...I am relatively new to the craft boards and have the same screen name at Glitter and Craftster.
what floats your boatMost days I am lucky if my boat falls at all, lol. I am a social worker by day (work with the homeless) and love to make things at all other times (sometimes I even sneak a project with me to work ;-) My craftivities include painting, stained glass mosaics, ceramics, jewelry making, paper crafts/rubber stamping and most recently knitting. I taught myself how to knit from Stitch n' Bitch after crocheting since I was a child. I was so psyched when I taught myself how to knit, and my fingertips have been sore ever since!
Quite honestly, I just love making stuff. My nails haven't been well manicured in a coupla years because I am constantly working on a project that jacks them up, and that's fine by me! I would love to take up carpentry/woodturning, but that's way off in the future.
Other things that float my boat (in no particular order): sunshine, rain, laughter, the smell of toast (don't ask, I don't know why, lol), my family, my friends, my craft tools, dancing, travelling, reading, a brisk walk, a cool breeze, the ocean...
where do you live I live on Long Island, NY about 45 minutes outside of Manhattan.
and what makes you crafty? At the risk of boring you and making your eyes cross, I will direct you to the answer to what floats my boat.

I fully expected to be the only Brit replying to this, and then I see Beatee who probably helped me fulfill my Lush addiction in Manchester !
The name came about after friends of mine comparing me to Marcie from Peanuts, the kind of girl who will let you copy her maths homework and then take the rap for copying. Obviously these friends don't know me too well.
I am 24, and live in a suburb of Manchester. I live with my utterly non crafty boyfriend of 5 years who is becoming very used to find seed beads on every surface and bits of clipped beading wire embedded in the carpet. I like beading, paper crafts (although I am bad at most of them, I have fun which is what counts) customising clothes, and am a beginner knitter. I am also a feminist and very proud of the puzzled looks I get when I am knitting on the bus with a copy of the Beauty Myth peeking out of my bag. I also love cooking and baking, almost more than I love eating the end product. In a perfect world I would have a shop where I sold my handmade crafty things and cakes.
As it is not a perfect world I am starting a new job on Monday as a credit controller in an insurance company, but this is just until I finish my BA and start my teacher training. I want to teach high school English and drama. I have taught sex ed before and I guess if I can put a condom on a carrot in front of a class of 15 year olds I can do pretty much anything.
