Wow, the nervousness.org site looks really interesting. Your photo swap could probably be described as the same sort of thing, sunshine_fix, or as having the same sort of goal (and I'm even more keen to participate now I've seen the nervousness site).
I admire what the nervousness people want to do because one of my most treasured gifts is a card some friends made for me when I turned 17 - they passed it around and each created a page - it was amazing. I think these projects are like that but on a global scale.
Schools do projects like this. One I know of for younger children involves classes sending a teddy bear on a "holiday" around the world. The teddy gets sent from school to school and when it returns to it's home it has a journal which all the schools the teddy visited have helped create. The classes write about their school and daily life and at the end the original class is able to compare what school is like in different communities around the world.
Another school project I know of is called something like "View from my window" (not sure exactly). Schools exchange written descriptions with a partner school about what they can see from a particular window. Then the schools draw a picture using the written description of how they imagine the view. Next, the schools swap these pictures and a photo of their view.
Wow, I've gone on! Anyway, I just wanted to say that I think these sorts of creative projects that encourage people to think, create and express themselves are great.
