Post Subject: Calling ALL designers, stylists! SWAP meet, NLP!
please repost. Your friends will really thank you for it.
ATTN: hip, young, fashion savvy designers, stylists, wardrobe people...
Hello!
Next Saturday, May 29th at Le Chic Boutique (6432 Santa Monica Blvd. @ Cole) we are having our first event! I know this isn't a lot of time to prepare, but we are too excited to wait! We are hoping to make this a monthly event with rotating designers, so lets start this off right!
Space is limited so hurry and sign up to be considered. We are looking for
young, hip, fashion forward individuals who have designs to sell. Jewelry
designers, vintage buyers/sellers, stylists with inventory are welcome as
well. This is going to be a great event, at a great space, with music,
refreshments and of course awesome designs by awesome people.
Forty dollars buys you a space at the sale. (Main area Approx. 16' wide X 36' long, plus extra small side area, 14' celings) The size of your space will be determined once all designers are selected. Again, there is VERY limited space, so please email me ONLY if you are SERIOUS about this. $40 gets you a space, and the money is to be paid BEFORE the day of the event to make sure your spot is secured. You can pay in cash if you visit Apollo Starr at the store (6432 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles, CA. 90038, call 323-461-STAR) You can charge whatever you like for your designs, and all the money is yours to keep! If you need to rent a table, or a rolling rack, there is a rental place next door, that charges about $5-10, you can email me for details about rentals. Otherwise, you must supply your own fixtures. Also, the sale will run from 10-6pm, on Saturday, so be prepared to work it!
So please, if you have a website, or some pictures of your work, email them
to me at once to be considered. We are trying to create a similar style/feel to that of Le Chic Boutique. 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, retro, young, funky, hip,
indie, urban, underground, chic, hipster, mod, etc. type designs. When emailing pictures, remember to keep them small, and virus free. Please also include a detailed description of your items/style of your designs. Again, SPACE IS LIMITED so please email me soon. We have to get the ball rolling, the sale is NEXT SATURDAY!
In addition, please let me know approximately how much space you will need.
For example, I know jewelry designers will need much less space than
clothing designers. Clothing designers are encouraged to keep designs to
under 2 rolling racks per person, and jewelry designers could possibly share a
table to cut costs and save space.
This is a great opportunity for new/up and coming/ young designers to get their designs out to the people! If all goes well this will be a huge success and will continue on a montly basis!
so get going!
spread the good word!

Hi,
I am doing my very first crafts booth at the end of July afor 3 or 4 days and can't afford to buy or rent an EZ-UP. I would soooo appreciate it if someone could lend or trade for something (art, massage). Please let me know asap.
I am in Santa Cruz and the festival is way up at the top of N. CA. so I would be willing to pick up anywhere in between or anywhere within a couple of hrs of me.
Thanks.

Make Santa proud of your craftiness this year and make your own stocking! Or impress your friends by gifting them such a beautiful stocking, they won't even care what's inside!
I'm co-hosting a stocking workshop in Downtown Brooklyn (just one stop from Manhattan), and we'll be making stockings out of felted sweaters, velvet, and some really beautiful upholstery fabrics. We've got all the materials, we just need some creative folks to come get busy with us.
The Details:
Sat., Dec 11, 11am - 2pm
$30 includes everything, all fees go directly to supporting Church of Craft NYC
At: Yarnivore/Church of Craft New York
325 Gold Street (near Flatbush and Myrtle and nearly every train in the city)

Post Subject: Share Booth space with me at N. CA women's festival!
Hi,
I would like to share booth space with another craftswoman at this upcoming women's festival:
www.campbettycampout.com/
I have an EZ-Up, so you don't ahve to have one!
The cost would be $150 each, for the three day event which should have over 3000 attendees. Admission (which includes camping I believe) is included--also lots of music, comedy and workshops.
It is in Laytonville, which is all the way up in northern CA (3 hrs north of SF).
I will be selling silver beaded jewelry and broken plate mosaics. It would be best if our art was different so as not to compete, but if you have jewelry that is of another sort that could work too.
We could drive up together and share gas costs too if that is convenient (I am in Santa Cruz).
This should be lots of fun and potentially lucrative too!
Contact me soon as the deadline is approaching and the booths will be snatched up quickly!

Post Subject: Crafters in Los Angeles- need a store to sell your art in?
Hi, I hope it's okay to post here, I'm new to getcrafty. But in addition to my crafting escapades (I am a fledgling potter) I also own a store in Santa Monica, on Main Street called The Artists' Web. It's like a little artists' co-op, and we sell only handmade items on the pricier end (fine art, jewelry, and gift items) of the retail scale to whimsical and casual items (beaded, knit little things too!) We're always looking for new artists, so please stop on by or call me if you're interested. The way it works is, we take a lease fee for whatever size space you need (depending on your art- wall, shelving, floor, jewelry case, etc) per month, starting at $49.00, and a 20% commission. We staff the store with our trained and fun personnel and cover the insurance, sales tax, credit card fees, etc. All you do is meet with us to see if this is something you want to commit to for 3 months, figure out how much space you want to lease, and then set up your wares. We send you a check for the stuff that sold, once per month. The store is open 10-7 every day except Mondays, and is located at 2806 Main Street (between Ashland and Hill Streets) in Santa Monica, CA, 90405. Please email emi@theartistswebstore.com if you'd like to find out more. Thanks!

I live in Taos which is about 4 hours north. I go to Albuquerque about once a month.
I've heard from people that used to live in bigger cities that ABQ doesn't have much happening stuff. To me it does but I'm not familiar with big cities. There always seems to be events happening to me.
I do know New Mexico real estate is going way up. ABQ isn't as bad as Santa Fe but has gone up in price. Are you looking to rent or buy?
Around the college there's lots of hip little stores.
ABQ has a lot of alternative things going for it. New age is big here in Northern New Mexico.
To me ABQ is just another big city with big box chain stores, sprawling suburbs and traffic. But I do have a bias because I prefer small towns.
Anything in particular you'd like to know?

Post Subject: guerrilla christmas cards
i had great fun a few years back making holiday collage cards out of "arty postcards" at the book shop where i worked. brightly colored christmas stickers and magazine snippings on simple black and white photos made a nifty contrast. some of my favorite scenes:
- brigitte bardot reading "the night before christmas" in a subway car
- santa and his sleigh beside water-skiing bathing beauties
- gingerbread men dancing down james dean's shoulder
- mermaids swimming in a sea of gifts
i bet this would work well with touristy cards as well - i like the idea of ornaments hanging from the golden gate bridge, or the statue of liberty holding a fruitcake. my family got a kick out of the first batch.

Albuquerque is one of the beading capitols of the country! My parents lived there for many years, and I loved traveling around to the various lapidary stores.
I can't think of any names -- it's been a while since I've been there, but I bet you could find some great stores to explore from a google search.
There's a really fun natural history museum there - lots o' dinosaurs, including shin bones of a dinosaur that's nearly two stories tall. And on the road to Santa Fe you can visit a couple of Native American reservations and see gorgeous authentic crafts as well as view dances and ceremonies.
Ah, and there's a Trading Post where there's wonderful crafts, including jewelry, medicine bags and katchina, from half-inch tall to life size.

Post Subject: Help me cluestick @ Work - Quitting Gracefully II
I'm not yet in a position to quit. But I fully intend to be.
My current work is completely oblivious to the fact that I'm not here for the long haul and they are very, very dependent on the work I do. They are enthusiastic about what I do and say things like, "Oh you can't ever leave!"
How do I get them used to the idea that I'm not a permanent fixture and they need to start dealing with that reality?
I'm taking night classes and have also picked up a part-time job to further my career goals. (Accounting) In any other workplace, this would be enough to clue them in that I intend to jump ship at some point. But they're so out of it that it feels like telling a little kid Santa Claus doesn't exist.
Help.
(Edited to add, no I can't do what I want to do in this workplace. Also, this workplace is scarily, horribly dysfunctional and I REALLY want to get out of here. You have no idea how badly.)

Post Subject: Christmas ornaments (grown-up ideas)
well, even though i missed the ornament swap, let's talk about it anyway!
what are your favorite ornament ideas? i really liked what i made last year - purple flowers with sequins. kind of punk, but cute, too.
i LOVE the ornaments this year from anthropologie. http://www.anthropologie.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1071&itemType=CATEGORY&all=1
it takes a lot of time to handknit these, but last year i also made some miniature stockings. i'd like to do mini sweaters, and mini pastries, like anthro is showing. i also love those "turtledove" ones, and the owl, and that robin mantle stocking hanger.
a little digression - my mother has these *UGLY* light up santa stocking holders. now that we are all grown, we share the responsibilty of filling the stockings every year. last year i heard my brother filling a stocking, hang it back on the santa hook, and a huge crash as the hook fell and smashed on the fireplace. the hooks are just decorative, and we need to put stockings on the ground when they are full. not ten minutes later, i did the exact same thing and broke another one. luckily, my mom didn't like the holders either and thought it was funny.

I know this is probably too late for this year... but you can actually take the cheesy ones you can buy at michaels or walmart in a bag (they are a really dark green, and not vintage looking at all) and you can bleach them to minty green or white get that old look. You can get a bag for usually about 10 bucks. I know it's too late this time... but it's an idea :)
THANK YOU! I did find a bag at Kmart so I will try the bleach. Hmm...wonder if I can then die them pink? I did find an ornament at Joanns too made of 6 white ones tied together around a Santa face...cut those off. So between the two and with your method of making them better I should have what I need. And its not too late - I tend to get all the parts as things go on sale, bag them with instructions so in the summer I can pull them out and make Xmas stuff. I was working on miniature winter scenes and needed trees...have everything else. Who knew trees were hard to find?
People always have great suggestions here.

I'm not but my mom was.
When I was a kid I used to really believe that Santa exists. We don't have chimney walls here but I and my younger siblings manage to hang our socks by the door. And on Christmas eve, we woke up to find out that ours socks have already been filled with chocolates and candies. There was even one time when my mom set up a drama with a friend and made me believe that it was Santa who gave me my Barbie. I miss those days....

Post Subject: regarding *official* days
beanie-
i am glad that you liked it. yea, feel free to copy it and do whatever you want with it.
as far as official days are concerned, they are all made up. at the bottom, as you may have noticed, i put my email so that you or anyone else can submit ideas for days that should be on the next one. my mom had suggested including something about the official week of giving but i forgot what it was and when during this calendar's creation. i did keep it in mind though and included donate something day as a result. i came up with share a skill day and later found out that there was a skill share in santa cruz, ca happening on the 5th, so i put it on that day appropriately. and shake your booty till it falls off! day is the same day some bands i like are coming to town...
i just did a search and found that in february there is also national engineers week, freedom to read week, eating disorder awareness week, antique week, national ffa week, world wetlands day (today feb.2) and a lot of days were listed on this site:
http://library.thinkquest.org/2886/feb.htm?tqskip1=1
but no, all the ones on the calendar i made i made up or other people who contacted me did.
well, feb.28th is celebrate Black History Month day. my girlfriend suggested that one. i wasn't sure about putting it on because i don't want it to sound like i mean we should only be aware on that day, but we decided to put it on since it is good to designate a time to celebrate it.
i'd love your input or your students. i am trying to include both fun and socially active days. i.e. headband day or wear red day in addition to ones like invite your neighbor over for dinner day.
like any holiday, celebrate the ones you want to celebrate. and interpret the wording (ex: bubble day) however you want.
LOOK FORWARD TO EACH DAY!

I compulsivly collect salt and pepper shakers: plants, animals, santa's, cars, people figures, you name it i've got it. But whenever i put them out, either on various shelves or in the kitchen, well there's just so many of them and they are all looking at me and it just creeps me out. i've been trying to play with how to display them...a few at a time? all around the apartment? on shelves? side tables?
would you be creeped out if you sat down on your friends couch and saw two cat salt and pepper shakers next to the coffee table books? am i the only one?

I keep thinking I have found fellow crafty people only to discover that they make that wooden Santa crap or fleece blankets found at every church craft show between here and Evansville!
If you are a bit different, then contact me! I'm trying to gather enough people to put together and Indy Indy Trunk Show and also a regular little weekly or bi-weekly group.
I live in Noblesville and I have some from Carmel, Greenwood and Franklin. If you are interested, we will probably meet in Indianapolis!!
BTW, I found a mom who knits cool little bags and when I asked about starting a "Stitch and Bitch" group, she freaked out on me. "What kind of name is that?!" Sometimes, these Indiana people kill me.

My mother knit me and my sister stockings when we were little that were just awesome-nothing fancy but they STRETCHED when they were full of gifts and as we played with them. Now, 37, I'm having my own children but cannot knitt and lost my stocking somewhere along the way. I am hoping to hire someone who could work with me on making 4 stockings to give to my family.
The stocking was white and red, had our names and year of birth on them and maybe a Santa or something.
Anyone interested?

swaps based on planned trips together ... you're going to the west coast? a West coast swap, with a Dre anthem CD ... or a shirt with an ironed on pic of the Santa Monica pier.

Hey there Brdgt! Thanks for responding. The SW looks pretty good right now for us. We would visit Colorado, too. Probably take the highway straight there and another route back through NM and Panhandle of TX. My baby brother lives in Estes Park (where we would stay at the "Shining Hotel"!!!).
My husband is also eager to visit Santa Fe, NM because of a restaurant owned by these people who wrote a Margarita book. My husband is a Margarita freak.
I want to visit Phoenix just because. The only time I spent there was in the Greyhound bus terminal. :(
I need to "map out" the trip and create a list of options. I sort of like the idea of not having a strict schedule and reservations. Those usually turn out to be the best for us!
First, though, we must survive this Easter weekend in Kalamazoooooooooo...

It might be fun to find a shop that has loads of different kinds of ornaments and buy a different one for each person. You can think about each personality as you choose.
You could buy 9 simple jars at a dollar store or something and get some of that etching cream and etch their initials or some image on each one. Then stick a candle in the jar.
Or fill the jars with candy
or fill with christmas lights
or fill with tinsel - different colored tinsel
I have the same issue, but there are about 22 people to think of in my case. Alternatively, I can join in on the secret Santa thing and just buy or make 5 gifts. (We do it a strange way here. If you bring a gift, it goes under the tree. They are passed out randomly, so you have no idea if you're buying for a man or a woman or an old person or a young one.)
Good luck

Post Subject: The lust of an older man
I'm almost 36 and am in the midst (hopefully the beginning!) of coming into my own sexual power and expression. I am a cooking, sewing, gardening, creative special education teacher and mama of a newly-9 year -old boy, live independently in my own little cottage in the boonies of NE California, and am currently involved in a passionate long distance relationship.
HE is....almost 60(!). When I met him, I truly guessed he was in his early 40s. He lives far away, though, in Santa Barbara, and is a painter by art and trade and also surfs almost every day. We met at a party up here in October, where we as soon as we introduced ourselves, we moved to a sofa and talked for 3 hours non stop. What began as a passionate, crazy fling during one of his painting trips has turned into something unique and interesting and real. I visited him 2 months later in December and next weekend we will meet in the Bay Area for a long weekend. We talk on the phone several times a week and share our lives that way. I don't know where we are creating our future to lead us, but it's so interesting! I cried the last time we were together in bed, because for the first time in like 10 years, I found true holistic intimacy with someone - in such an unlikely circumstance. I have questions for us to deal with during this upcoming visit, like....what are we doing? What are the expectations and boundaries we want to have with one another?
Anyone else out there dating an older man?
By the crafty way, I'm bringing my sewing machine next weekend to the coast! I am reclaiming my seamstress skills as true art. I have some ReVisions and Christine Jonson patterns to work on. I am just beginning to sew clothes for myself again after 9 years since my son's birth...about time!!!!! So my painter LOVAH (as Carrie from Sex in the City would say) will be making paintings of the rocks and ocean and hills and I will be making clothes. And lots of other things!
Thanks for raising this issue, bessiemae! I haven't posted before, but you really opened the door for me.
Happy Valentine's Day!

Hit the flea markets! You can find some pretty weird, although often overpriced, stuff there.
Also, if you get "global" fabric and drape them on the walls or as curtains (where did I read that crafty bit answer to not being able to paint walls?), it has that effect.
You can do themes for certain rooms. I'm so nerdy I'd probably do that. I'm lucky because a World Market just opened up, so I could actually do that sort of thing.
But I really think flea markets might help, but it depends. When I went to the flea market in Santa Monica, I almost went head over heels with all the different thigns I could buy for fairly cheap. I bought a sari bag. Hee.

they're probably filled with buckwheat hulls, not buckwheat itself. buckwheat hulls make a fairly heavy, firm, but springy and crunchy-feeling pillow. buckwheat grains are like rice grains, but angular and brownish.
i've never heard of microwaving buckwheat hulls though, so maybe i'm totally wrong!
i make pillows filled with rice (any kind; i just use cheap brown rice) to microwave for that kind of thing. my cat has a flat pillow full of rice, and he loves it.
if you decide you want buckwheat hulls, they sell them in bulk at Community Market in Santa Rosa. if you're not in that part of the bay area, try a feed store.

Post Subject: Election Day- We're living in an historic time
My boyfriend called me to day and shocked me, and I have to share this info with you all. No matter what your party affiliation, you might want to take a look at this. It's the lead story in this week's issue of 'The American Conservative' which was started by Pat Buchanan. Entitled, 'The GOP Must Go', the magazine is urging conservatives to vote Democrat on tuesday, to show a lack of confidence in White hHouse polices. The article also essentially supports everything liberals have been saying for 5 years- that civil liberty, fair play and democracy are more important than partisanship.
http://www.amconmag.com/2006/2006_11_20/feature.html
The New York Times has also made an historic move- for the first time in living memory, it's not endorsing any Republicans. BTW, in New York the Times is viewed as 'right of center to consersative,' not liberal.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/05/opinion/05sun1.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
The Army Times and the other newspapers in the Military Times stable is putting out an editorial entitled "Rumsfeld Must Go". http://www.armytimes.com/
And finally, in 'Vanity Fair', the architect of the Iraq War finally admits that he made a mistake.
http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2006/12/neocons200612?currentPage=2
I fully expect to see a rain of frogs and locusts over NYC tomorrow. No doubt Santa will be coming on Xmas Eve, and the Easter Bunny will show up next year. For the first time since I was 8, I may have to leave put some cookies on Dec. 24th- after all, if all this is happening, Santa is probably real, too.

When I was in school, there was a strike organized by TAs, I think. From my experience, most everyone attended class. Those that didn't want to cross picket lines were given an invitation to come to office hours so the instructor could relecture on the material.
The only ones that I noticed who didn't attend class were the slacker types who used anything as an excuse to miss class.
As I recall, the buses refused to cross the picket lines as well, and that's what basically caused everything to grind to a halt on campus. If you've ever seen UC Santa Cruz, you would understand this completely.
I attended class during the strikes. I was paying way too much for my education to miss classes. And it's not as if the bigshots on campus actually listened to students. Students did all these protests and things for their causes, but it never made a difference in the end. The admin just did whatever they wanted to do, and they only cared about how their changes affected projected enrollments and funds. I guess I'm jaded...

1/4 of the way through a christmas x-stitch for myself that's an old fashioned stamp w/ santa on it.
A latch hook rug thing (maybe for myself if it looks good and I can find a place for it) of a rose.
Learning how to knit. Although this has been put aside for a while. I taught myself how to knit w/ diagrams in books, but I can't grasp purling. I have knitting down, so once I find someone to show me how to purl I'll work on that for a while and then other stitches. Then eventually make something.

I liken my town to Stars Hallow. My store had a turkey drive for Thanksgiving and after Christmas we collect used kids coats for the local food bank. Just this weekend, one of the many churches (we still have more bars than churches but it's pretty close!) held an "Old Fashioned Christmas" at the downtown movie theater. The town's Halloween parade has been done for over 70 years.
There is a local organization that gives holiday meals to 500 families in the area. Churches have "Trees of Need" The high school students are required to do service hours in order to graduate, we have a holiday display in the town square, a street fair in the fall, the churches have fish frys and soup suppers. Christmas Eve, Santa is driven in a fire engine through all the street of the town throwing out candy canes to the kids. While you are waiting, you can go to the movie theater for a free viewing of Miracle on 34th Street. The Boy Scouts sell luminaries as a fundraiser and the sidewalks on Christmas Eve are lined by glowing paper bag lanterns.
I think every town does a little something for the holidays. The fact that it's bigger in the city is because it's well, THE city. Companies know how many tourists and residents are in the area and these "donations" are actually coming for the marketing/advertising budgets (yes, that does include NYC's government too).

- Beer bread kits for secret santa and my mother-in-law.
- Brownie kit for a friend.
My sister appreciates the crafty stuff because she is the same way, but my in-laws are pretty ambiguous. Plus, the wealthy and have everything, so I usually try to stick to hand-assembled or home made food gifts. At least they can eat it.

If we're talking Season #1, then hell yes. It was like a really good over-the-top soap opera. Kind of like Santa Barbara before it got cancelled.
I am not so thrilled with Season #2 because it does literally seem like an updated version of 90210. Especially with all the characters, even the bad ones, now becoming this sort of happy, if somewhat dysfunctional family. I liked it better when Luke was a thuggish jock and Seth was an actual nerd. Actually, remember the I Hate Brenda zine? Somebody should start an I Hate Seth zine because he's become so precosciously smug and self aware this season. I'd really love it if they had a storyline where he got sent off to military school.

so i was thinking more about it, and another benefit of the SF bay area is you have so many different cities to choose from. once you're here, you're never far from a ton of options. there are so many different areas ranging from mountains, beaches, urban, suburban, and everything in between. each area has it's own character, flavor, culture.... i love it here. i live in a suburb i'm not so crazy about, but it has what i need and in 10 minutes, i'm in downtown san jose. 15 minutes the other way, palo alto or the mountains. 45 minutes to SF. 25 minutes to santa cruz. and after a couple years of living in the boonies and having to drive 20+ minutes to a hick town with a grocery store, 45 to a crappy craft store, i'll never again take for granted all the abundant conveniences and specialty shops and spots of every kind nearby.
it's a great central location and it only takes a couple few hours to get to so many other great places in the state. a cheap flight will get you anywhere along the west coast to boot.
in the bay area, i'd recommend looking into SF, downtown san jose, palo alto/mountain view, santa cruz/soquel/capitola. what kind of community are you looking for? jobs? schools? "scenes"? will you have a car or want to rely on public transportation?

I do have cable but my service doesnt carry the DIY network, annoyingly enough. There is a great knitting show on there too , it is aggravating and I have mailed the company a letter and emailed but so far I still don't see it :(
I am wondering if they sell transcripts of the shows, or the video of the shows.. hmm I know that some projects are online but I would really like to tape it myself.

the Stitches West market is like a craft fair. there are booths from many different retailers, so you can find pretty much anything you're looking for. i haven't been for a few years, but i had fun when i went. i don't know how to describe the "vibe"... it's just a blend of every kind of knitter and knit shop.
Santa Clara is pretty far afield for me, especially during the semester, so i'm probably not going to go. i can't afford the workshops right now, but some day i would love to take one from Nancy Bush on Estonian knitting.

moving this to share a craft so it will get the attention it deserves.
there's a shop in santa cruz, CA called BOE (best of everything) that carries a lot of recycled items, most (or at least many) are made in the third world under "free trade" conditions. wish they had a website but they don't. but if you're ever in the area, they've got some nifty stuff like baskets woven from rolled up recycled chip bags (you know the mylar (??) bags with the metallic insides) from southeast asia, those vases made of newspaper, baskets and bowls made from rolled up magazines and much more.

What fun! I did a 2+ month stint in a circle Seattle to Santa Fe on a motorcycle. Are you going to camp or hotel it? I would highly recommend a Woodalls guide - it has all the campground info from Nat. parks to RV campgrounds.
Not to miss (in my opinion):
New Mexico: Gila cliff dwellings, Carlsebad Caverns (stay to see the bats at dusk), White Sands, Taos, Roswell, the mission ruins and the food ah, the food.
Utah: Zion & Bryce Nat. parks
If you are going to do Yellowstone - the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody Wyoming is interesting (and the hotels are a lot cheaper) and in the summer they have rodeos everynight.
Washington: Mt. St. Helens, the Olympic Nat forest, take the ferry from Anacortes to Orcas island there isn't much camping there but the art community is diverse.
What are your interests?
Unauthorized America guide book has some fun kitchy atypical attractions. If you go to Florida catch Weeki Wachee if it is still open.
Grocery stores help keep things cheap food wise.
Here's the maternal part: bring some of those silver emergency blankets, big bottles of water, energy bars, extra oil and fuses for the car.

It's also my first major travel experience alone. I have wanted to travel solo for some time and figured I would test it out domestically first before travelling alone abroad. I can't wait!
I am trying to get to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket before the end of the summer as well. Either that or a trip to the Catskills area in NY.

sorry it took me so long to get back to you on this one.
don't move to north hollywood, unless you wanna go over a hill to get to work every morning, and there's pretty much only one major street (laurel canyon) to take. if you do want to live in "the valley" i would suggest sherman oaks or studio city. it's still over the hill but at least it's closer to the hill itself.
i live about 2.5 miles from la brea and wilshire. they call my neighborhood "beverly hills adjacent." we're about a mile from west hollywood, and sometimes you can find some good deals with older buildings like mine. west hollywood is hip and it has cool stuff to do but it can get expensive cuz a lot of young hip professionals have moved to the area in the past few years. avoid park la brea at all cost - it's like 2200 a month for a 3-bedroom place (that's over 700 a person!) and the place is kinda old and dumpy.
los feliz and silverlake are cool areas but if you want an easy drive (aka avoid the freeways and major streets in order to get to work) i'd look specifically in west la. best way to check it out is look for 90035 (that's my zip code) on yahoo maps and get an idea of the area i'm talking about, at least geographically. i'd look between santa monica blvd to the west, highland to the east, sunset or hollywood blvd to the north and olympic to the south, maybe pico.
anyway if you have any more questions or need help, lemme know. :)
edited to add: oh, to answer your question to shawnee - the north is the san fernando valley. it's very suburban, way too hot, and it's a pain in the butt to go anywhere. i lived in van nuys for like 3+ years and you really have to scour the little streets to get anywhere in the morning. but they do have better yarn stores in the valley than in west la.

I am starting to feel it, I think that making almost all of my presents this year helps with that. I started a while ago, but am now starting to finish things which is exciting. It will really start for me on Dec. 1st because that is when the post office will start Operation Santa Clause. Since we are short on money this year, I have asked my parent to sponsor me in buying stuff for 3 kids instead of getting me a present. So next monday I get to go to the main post office and sift through letters to find 3 kids (I ususally go for kids in my neighborhood since I know there is a need here) and then go buy clothes and books and toys for them. I have no kids in my life so this is my annual education in "what is hot this year". (I'm sure THAT will be another thread once I find out the ages). I am so excited, it really is my favorite part of the holidays (even if it does mean braving the crush in in thoy store)!

Christmas with the Monkey Boys is now in High Gear.
We read the Jean Shepherd "Christmas Story" and watch the dvd at least a zillion times! Like others, we also imbibe in shmaltzy clay-mation marathons of "Drummer Boy" and various Santa movies.
We cut down our Christmas tree at the tree farm behind us. There is just something so cool and family fun about bundling up, saw in hand and traipsing through mucky or snowy farm land to find the perfect imperfect tree (crooked trunks and missing branches r us!), cut it down, haul it at least a half mile, and then secure it to the top of the Craptastic minivan. We rationalize this annual excursion and expense by claiming the cash stays in our local economy and it ensures more green space and fewer developments.
About 5yrs ago, to coincide with the arrival of a Lab puppy, we stopped using the fancy glass ornaments and started making our own. Paper chains. Popcorn garland. Recycled cards. Juice can lids. Clothes pin snowflakes. Glitter dipped pinecones. Scandinavian hearts. Our only caveat is that we use nothing fragile, in case the dogs tip the tree.
We bake lots of cookies and give them away. Consume way too many. Bake doggie treats for the many pups on our street.
Eat several crates of clementines and swill egg nog.
This year, we're making fleece blankies to give to the lone homeless shelter in our rural area. Donating various coats and outerwear, as well.
Kids both have Christmas Concerts- one for Cello Boy and some freaky weird Holiday hoo-ha for the younger. We all cram into the unheated auditorium, wet boots, tired siblings, and indigestion from hurriedly inhaled dinner to watch our kid sing off- key Culturally Sensitive holiday songs no one's ever heard, complete with goofy hand gestures. Awesome good time!
I got up at 4AM to be at Mega Retailer for the 5AM opening on Black Friday. It's a tradition and I refuse to even begin my shopping until then. Keeps me in budget. 4:30 AM, in line with Gal Pal, sipping a Poor Man's Mocha Latte (instant coffee with instant hot cocoa mix) in a travel mug, 8 degrees F in predawn dark, and shuffling in the Lake Effect snow to get my Star Wars Ultimate Light Saber kit for $21, because "Santa can do anything". Armed with cell phones and military precision, we were in and out in less than 36 minutes.
One of our favorite traditions is the Christmas Eve gingerbread house. Every year we would make a gingerbread house the long afternoon of Christmas Eve. Leave the creation on the dining room table and attend the Children's Service at church. Every year, No, No Bad Dog would eat it. No, No, Bad Dog passed into "doggie heaven", but we continue the Ginger bread house tradition.
We check out the lights and the Christkindl market in Akron, and do a bit of ice skating.
We do make some of our gifts, but not all. And we try to buy from other crafters.

To jump start my holiday mood, started from scratch on the Christmas tree. New ornaments. Non-traditional colors. Invader Zim motif. Kids wacky excited by it. So frickin' homely it makes you laugh. Boy #2 who hates to sing belted out the Invader Zim carols whilst decorating: "Bow down! Bow down! Before the power of San-Ta! Be crushed! Be crushed by His Jolly Boots of Doom!" Did I mention his rousing guitar rendition of "Good King Wencewhoziwhatsit" complete with distortion and feedback? #2 will gladly go caroling with you! Of course, you'll be forced to sing his twisted renditions.
OMG!!! I Sooo NEEEED an Invader Zim X-Mas motif!! My 12 yr old son has been singing of Jolly Boots of Doom for weeks now. My 5 yr old sings "Jelly" boots of doom!!! I think I need to get my boys over to your place pronto, so they can sing twisted carols too!
Hehehehehe!!!
Care to share your Zim-tastic X-mas decor? Wow....I may have to dig into my stash and make some cross-stitch Zim and Gir ornaments!!
This year I'm actually in a good holiday mood. My 5 yr old is really excited by it all, and have been thanking me almost non-stop for the decorations, crafty fun, and annual treks to Santa and the holiday train set-ups, etc. He's been really cute about it all, so how can I be grinchy when he's thrilled to death?

One of my absolute favorites was a pair of hand-knit Christmas stockings! They're personalised with our names. One of them has Santa and one has a snowman. They are beautiful and they just make the room when they're hanging from the mantel! Plus I use them every year!!!
I also got a set of baking dishes which was quite handy. And a pewter bread dish. It came with a personalised cloth to wrap the bread in, but may be used without it.
And someone just framed our invitation in a store-bought frame. At first I thought it was quite cheesy, but it looks nice and I loved the invitation, so that worked.
A store-bought blanket, which was sort of a throw for the couch. A hand-painted bird feeder! I'm thinking..........
