Post Subject: Easy Knitted Shawl Thingy Patterns?
I'm a very beginner at knitting, and I'm looking for a shawl/scarf pattern, like this one that Jennifer Aniston wear in Along Came Polly. I'm not quite sure what to call it, but it looks freakin' cool and I'm looking for a project to knit.
What's the easiest way to go about this? Any patterns out there to help? I'm a beginner and can't do anything too hard at the moment.
Thanks!

first, i wanted to thank teagrrl for reminding me about that scarf pattern. thanks! i now know what to knit for my friend. :-)
second, if you don't want your stockinette to curl, for a scarf, you can add a garter or seed/moss stitch border up the scarf. or do a "broken" scarf = stockinette for an inch broken by a garter ridge, repeat.
i am by no means a knitty crafista ... i am still learning but this link helped me. it shows you how to do knit & purl and gives a simple a beginning scarf pattern. also stitch and bitch is a great book, well written and witty ;) http://www.bust.com/knithappens/

I can totally relate to your frustrations & excitement as you learn to knit tootsiecat. I'm teaching myself how to crochet currently & using a book that I can even recall the name of right now. I think I'm going to do one of the classes at Michael's, too. Do you get excited when you start looking at all the cool things you can eventually do? I had to stop myself over the weekend from buying the fantastic $4.77 yarn & settle on the $1.88 sale stuff b/c I know I'll be screwing up for awhile. The yarn I got had a cool chevron scarf pattern on it, that I'm trying to make, but I think I'm being overzealous as it's an intermediate pattern. Back to 'beginner' I must go!

Under "Yarn Question" I posted about the Pine Cone Scarf from Knitting Daily. It is a really nice man-scarf pattern. I finished it in about a week, and it was my first time using a chart and everything. I used two strands (one in Natural, one in Moss or Grass or something like that) of Patons SWS.
I think hats are also a nice idea. I wish I could be more help, but I'm struggling with the handmade gifts thing right now myself.

My Grandma taught me to knit when I was really young, but it didn't really take. Then about 5 years ago I was reading Real Simple magazine and it had an easy scarf pattern in it. I decided to knit my Grandma and Grampa scarves for Christmas. If nothing else I thought my Grandma might find my attempt amusing.
It turned out that when we exchanged gifts, she had knit me a scarf as well. Everyone had a laugh. Of course the pattern she used for my scarf was VERY complicated, especially compared to the one I knit her! I still get compliments on it.
My Grandma died in October the following year, so knitting has become a way to really remember and honor her.
I also love working with my hands, and am prone to stress. So crafting helps me focus on something other than work, and I can produce something I'm proud of as well.
So far I'm a novice knitter, a beginner at crochet and cross stitch, and I'm dying to buy a glue gun. I think I just like the idea of some sort of electric tool.
I inherited my Grandma's sewing machine, luckily it's a newer model. But I'm afraid to use it. I was never good at sewing in Home Ec. However, I'm sure one day I'll try it again.
