thanks jean, for the plug for http://www.craftivism.com!
it's still pretty tiny, but it is my hope for it to get bigger as time goes on.
i've had some wonderful, inspiring responses from some people who think i'm on the right track, as well as people who want to write some bits for the site as well! hurrah!
first and foremost, i wanted to create a site that was a resource for people who were curious about how crafts and activism intertwine. so i'm always on the lookout for links that fit the bill.
in time, i'm hoping to add some bits that other people have written, but i have to get through my grad finals first.
i honestly believe that everytime you make something yourself, be it scones, lip balm, mittens or a zine, you ARE an activist- because you are taking time out to make things YOUR way and not giving in to what anyone tells you should like.
rock.

My favorite recipe for scones uses sour cherries-
http://www.waldoward.com/recsconesgin.htm
I've have never used dried cherries like the recipe calls for- just fresh or frozen- So you'll need to skip the first step of soaking them. You don't want to add too much extra moisture to the recipe, so when they are holding a lot of liquid I put them on several layers of paper towels until they dry out a bit.
It's a super tasty recipe.

lemon juice will de-stink a cutting board and probably kill some bacteria, but it won't make a raw meat cutting board safe to use with foods that will be served uncooked.
i make lemon scones (substitute some lemon juice and zest for part of the liquid in aa scone recipe), but i guess i don't do much cooking with citrus. i put a quarter of a lemon in my water bottle every day when i have fresh lemons, though.
i love grapefruit, but i can see how it could be gross to a person.

yowzas. that's a LOT of apricots. i guess you just need to start incorporating them into your daily meals...
-- sliced into your cereal
-- folded into crepes
-- topped with a buttery, nutty bleu and some crushed nuts and served as a snack
-- reduced to a glaze and topped onto pork, salmon, etc
-- apricot vodka or brandy
-- tarts, cakes, scones, etc..
yikes. those ideas are no help. what about passing a few along to friends and family?

I'm married to a No Fuss guy who secretly likes Some Fuss.
- a Birthday Confection tailored to his tastes. Mine loves HM chocolate amaretto cheesecake with cherries in kir on the side. Your's may like an Indian Fresh Fruit concoction or peanut butter cookies. Make it Truly HIS and for no other.
- Dinner Out, especially if you surpise him with a place he likes better than you do. Make the sacrifce for His Birthday. He'll appreciate it.
- add tickets to ball game/sporting event/concert you know he would enjoy faaaarrrr more than you, but go with him. It is HIS birthday.
- Sensual massage with lightly scented oils, candles, and soft music is nice and unexpected. Cheap and fun!
- Treat him to a cozy brunch at home this weekend: waffles/pancakes, melons, berries, real brewed tea/coffee. Or make scones. Let him have the crossword or Op-ED sections first. Play music he likes. Lounge in jammies. He doesn't have to shave.

Pumpkin, apple, peach, and pear butters are rendered fruits, which have a high pectin content. As they cook down, they naturally thicken and become sweeter, browner and require little or no extra sugar. Usually have some sweet spices(cinnamon, nutmeg, alspice, ginger) added, and a bit of citrus juice or zest as preservative. Rich flavor and can have thinner consistancy than jams/jellies. Like thick drained applesauce.
Wonderful on baked goods or with pork. MonkeyBoys LOVE fruit butters on homemade breads or scones.

Mesh tea infuser.
And, just because I don't have one, a large plastic (well, probably melamine) spoon. I used it all the time when cooking, but it recently broke in a scones dough incident. Haven't been able to find a new one yet (which could be due to the fact that I never get around to going to the kitchen supplies shop...).
I like IKEAs 3-pack of wooden cooking utensils, too.

wow, great ideas already! i'd love to hear more.
lizzymahoney, the chocolate and butter really do add up! and last year, i made really great massage bars with mostly stuff i had, but adding in what i had to buy new and guess what? i could have bought them all bars from Lush for the same price.
i love the idea of consumable gifts. for friends and non-family, that's totally what i'm going to do. i actually made a lot of jam this summer, so i was thinking of giving folks a small jar of jam, and maybe some bread mix? or scones or something that goes with jam? any recommendations would be welcome.
i just spoke with my father and told him he could request something for me to make. he's worried that slippers would be too much (he wears a size 13!) so he asked for a blue hat with a pom-pom on it. and i just happen to have the perfect pattern - he'd love this. and i'll just add a pom-pom to the top.
http://www.girlfromauntie.com/patterns/shop/celticcap/detail.asp
i've also gotten most of my girlfriends to agree to not exchange gifts. instead, we go see a broadway show together while we're home. it is actually cheaper than $25+ on a gift for 5 different people, and we're not obligated to then cart stuff back to our tiny san francisco apartments.
xuli - i hear you on the sibling's boyfriend/girlfriend. and i'm actually going to my companion's parents' houses before i go to mine, so i'm a little worried they're going to give me presents. my companion told me not to worry about his siblings or parents (i'd probably give them the jam-scone mix), but that maybe something small for his two nieces would be nice. maybe your brother can let his girlfriend know she doesn't need to get you anything? i'm sure she'd be relieved.
ETA: LMH - if you have a good chai mix recipe, the kind with the powdered milk, i would *love* it. i'm constantly buying it at the store for myself, and i know there's an easier way!
also, i do have some homebrew resources - this year i am actually going to help my companion make some. i took a bottle home last year, and it was the hit of my parents' holiday party! great reminder. he actually bought stuff to make beer two months ago, but i was in peru then and it kind of was forgotten about.

yessss...I make a big batch of the steel cut oats (the kind that takes 30 minutes to cook) on Sunday, and then microwave it the rest of the week. I add a spoonful of TJ's apricot fruit spread or jam, and milk... mmmm. and it just takes a minute! the favorite breakfast of baby ginge and moi.
sometimes i'm motivated to make dried cherry scones, using whole wheat pastry flour (i think i actually found the recipe here on this board) and they are very tasty, but haven't done that in a while...

If you want to wait until June 20, do a Summer Solstice party (aka Midsummer's Night). You can do that party either very casual or make it dressy and romantic.
This sounds really pretty. Along that line, you can have a Victorian tea party! Scones, tea, fruit, have everyone dress up and use porcelain dishware.
Cowabunga! - come as your favourite Teenage Mutant Ninja turtle. Really separates the losers from the cool people.
God party - veryone dresses like different Gods and argue as to which of them is the one true Lord.
These are both hilarious!

Oh how I love tea!
It truly is one of my favourite things, especially with some short bread or scones with Devon cream. I actually have one shelf completly dedicated to tea. When I can't ge to one of the tea shops in Toronto I will order from Adagioteas.com. They have wonderful selection and really nifty accessories. Check out the "peeing" cup steeper thingy. I love mine and have a hard time going back to using a tea-ball. My favourite right now is Rooibos (this is actually a herbal tea but tastes like real tea), it was actually suggested to me during my pregnancy as a great breast milk stimulator. When I'm in for a caffinated tea and it is a crappy dreary day I love a cup of Lapsang Souchon, it smells and kinda tastes ike wood smoke.

Where I was 5 years ago:
Homeless, friendless, penniless, sick, in the middle of a divorce and unable to care for my child or myself.
Where I just was last week:
Sitting in a gorgeous bed and breakfast next to a loch in Scotland, eating fresh scones and sipping coffee with clotted cream next to a roaring fire, holding the hand of my fiancee and laughing with friends. I also got my first illustration book deal this past year.
I say this only because if 5 years ago someone had told me my life would turn around so drastically for the better I would have said they were nuts. I am extremely thankful I did not throw in the towel at a time when my future looked not only bleak, but completely barren of any joy, healing or love. For those who aren't where they wanted to be just yet: Hang on and don't give up on visualizing your perfect future. It is amazing how life tosses us curve balls all the time!

Post Subject: Renaissance wedding
My husband and i had a renaissance wedding. You can get costumes pretty cheap. esp. if you wear the lower class (of the time) garb. and the wildflowers for your flowers. the traditional cake then was pastries stacked so we had scones decorated in ribbons. we made dried moss topiary stands in flowerpots painted and then decorated with dried flowers. The only cost was the food and you can do a feast (that i wanted to do) but my parents wanted to spring for a center in our area. (the biggest cost of the wedding)
and if you are into the ren. fair, sometmes they will have a wedding celebration package. The one in our area is reasonably priced.
But i think the most expensive thing we paid for was a sword for my husband's wedding gift.

I think this is a great idea! I am on day 2 of my "healthier eating plan", an attempt to stay off sugar and refined carbs for 2 weeks. I went to the gym this morning, I've got a yummy salad all ready for lunch today, and my dinner all planned out. Plus, so far I've managed to steer clear of home-made scones today, and really yummy-smelling doughnuts too.
