I just got the Sew Fast Sew Easy book (which comes with 3 patterns for a pillow, bag and skirt) and it's super-easy for the beginner. Being a beginner myself, it's the only sewing book I've read that breaks down all the terms and techniques into easy-to-understand language and instructions. I haven't tried my first project yet, but I have a pretty firm grasp of all of the steps in putting it together, so I'm raring to go. :-)
is super good. it goes in a lot of garment stuff, but i use to be an on-off sewer, and this is a useful guide.
what kind of stuff are you thinking about sewing? i picked up this cute guide book/project card set called Sew easy: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1931543682/qid=1143655402/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/104-4394802-4593560?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
and it has a lot of projects for easy projects, some that day an hour to a few.
good luck on finding your manual! i lost mine to my sewing machine, or it's been misplaced and it sucks because i'm losing small pieces of my machine that aren't too essential but are a pain in the neck (aka the thread holder on the top of my machine- it's horizontally loading as opposed to vertically, and my zipperfoot does not for the love of god want to get onto the presserfoot. boo!)

aw man, this whole this in just nuts. I mean really.
I understand SFSE wanting to protect their copyright, but shouldn't they focus their efforts on the actual "So Fast Sew Easy" concept.
But that's just me.

Post Subject: Stitch n Bitch Chicago needs our help!
Just wondering if any of you are aware this is happening:
Sew Fast Sew Easy complained to CafePress against the Stitch 'n Bitch Chicago group (which is a non-profiting group), claiming they cannot sell merchandise that says the phrase "Stitch and Bitch" on it, because SFSE claims to own it under trademark (uuuhhh...yeah....we're all thinking the same thing).
I'm pooped from all the typing on the other board. I just wanted to make sure folks around here knew this was happening. Their boards are having to be cleared over and over again from the backlash. Eeeesh...bad, bad move for a company to make around crafters, I say.

I believe that is "Sew Fast & Easy", but yeah, when I first heard of this business, I thought it was related to Butterick. I am surprised Butterick hasn't attacked them for causing confusion with their TM of SFSE (if that is even TMed).
What I am amazed at is the stupidity of their customers who defend them with the most ridiculous remarks. Either that, or she and her employees/friends are pretending to be customers. LOL

Might as well tack this one on here too:
It's official, a boycott has been called on New York-based company Sew Fast Sew Easy who claim trademark ownership (and creation) of the phrase "Stitch and Bitch". A statement on their site reads: "No other usage of Stitch & Bitch ever occurred before the first Friday evening gatherings at Sew Fast Sew Easy (in 1997)". (Personally, I think going so far as to claim creation of the phrase is pretty audacious, not to mention easily disproven.) So certain are they in this belief, they've launched a nationwide campaign against non-profiting SnB groups with cease and desist letters. Needless to say, SFSE has done little to endear itself to many legions of crafters who've commonly used the phrase for decades and beyond.
If you want to get in the mix, and read up on this sordid (and very anti-craft community) tale, please visit FreetoStitchFreetoBitch.org

"stitch n' bitch" "you mean that knitting book"
"yeah, duh!"
the only commercial enterprise i think of when i think of stich n' bitch is "those knitting books" ... and the future crochet one!!!
while i would've thought the "sew fast sew easy" site was alright, they're not particularly crazy innovative or anything, and they definately are heavily influenced by other crafty sources. i think we all are, and it's relatively difficult to come up with something brand spanking completely new.
when i think "stitch n bitch" i think of feminism. i think of reclaiming craftiness from stereotypes, i think of crafting ironically and for fun and pleasure. i think of smashing the corporate and religious and tradition mandatated rigidity of what a girl is and what a girl does. girls getting together and causing a ruckus. making something tangible and wonderful.
damn, i'm a pansy! i'm almost getting misty eyed.
and when i think of "stitch n' bitch" i think of sharing. especially if it's something, like that phrase, that doesn't belong to me in the first place.
i did just get off a 12 hour night shift, so go easy on my typos.

Love my Viking. I have a low end computer (sew easy 350 or something like that) version. My mom still has her Viking from the 70s and it works great too, I used hers last weekend while visiting. It's not a cheap brand, to be sure, but everyone I know that has one loves theirs.

there are a couple Barbara's Bookstores around Chicagoland...you might want to contact them?:
http://www.barbarasbookstore.com/
...i think the one in Oak Park might be a cool spot because there is a Paper Source and an indie knitting store nearby so there might be a lot of local interest....it's like 20 minutes from Chicago
also, maybe you thought of this already, but repotdepotfabrics carries that sew fast sew easy book, maybe they would carry yours? good luck! i can't wait to see it!
