I have a Janome MC 3000. Janome has been making sewing machines since the 1800s, and you can find quality workhorse models (like mine) for only a few hundred dollars. I bought mine from Ken's Sewing Center in Muscle Shoals, AL. They're probably the most reputable sewing machine dealer in the U.S.: http://www.kenssewingcenter.com/index.htm
They also have an eBay store, so you can read the thousands of positive feedback they've received. I forget their eBay ID, but you could call them and ask.
