I had a similar problem when I hadn't used a sewing machine for a while. The only thing I had done wrong was put the thread through the wrong side of the needle. Start with the basics and check to make sure the thread it going through all the guides properly and that you don't have the tension cranked up really high or something then check with your local sewing/fabric store if things still don't work right.
