Post Subject: good fabric/notions/sewing stores in nyc?
i moved to nyc about 6 months ago and i have yet to really go searching for some good fabric + sewing stores (my money has gone mostly to rent, as you can imagine). before i get started, does anyone have any recommendations? we had a joann's where i used to live and, while i am also looking for stores offering more unique items, a suggestion for a joann's-type store where you can get just about any type of sewing supply would be helpful as well.

A chunk of beeswax to make hand-stitching easier.
Really--you can usually get it at the health food store, or at a really good sewing supply shop.
You thread the needle and tie a knot at the end of the thread. Then you drag the entire length of thread through the edge of the wax to coat it.
As you sew, you will not have any of the annoying twisting (or un-plying if you use poor-quality thread). And it smells great AND it washes out of your fabric easily!
