I stored some patterns in a really large metal box (looked like one for index cards, except it held patterns perfectly). When that was outgrown, I used a drawer in a plastic dresser. Now, they are on a shelf inset on my sewing table.

Here's a really bad picture of mine:

What you don't see is the *other* side of the room where my sewing table is covered with piles and piles of fabric that are stacked so high that I'm always afraid they'll avalanche on me while I'm working!
And you also don't see the 2 dressers that are jam packed and overflowing with enough skeins of yarn to re-dress a flock of sheep. And there's a 6-foot bookshelf crammed with thrifted vintage craft books and magazines. And don't get me started on the closet... Yikes!

I'm not sure about your space issues, but I saw a wonderful fold away table on craftster.org out of an old door and hinges that the person was using for their sewing table. Then, of course, you would still have to buy the cardboard topping for your quilts, but it would be close to free and very compact.

I always joke that I am Artistically ADD... it is very true. I paint, I craft, I crochet, I sew, I draw, I sculpt, etc etc etc etc. It has opened me up to a lot of new things, however, it is not necessarily a good thing. I was an art major in college. I chose to teach, however ,I have been thinking a lot lately about going back to school to get my MFA or Masters in art. My main issue with this is that I do not have an artistic strength to display in a portfolio. My artistic interests are far too broad to be taken seriously. I have really been thinking of ways lately to combine these into something new and unusual.
My husband and I live in a two bedroom apartment, with the second bedroom used as our "library" as well as my "studio"... both terms used very loosely. Because I have so many different directions my art is going in, my studio is such a mess! I have yarn all over the place, half painted canvases lining the walls, a painting table, a sewing table, and on top of it all, when I get in an artistic mood, organization and cleaning are the last things on my mind, so, things rarely make it back to their designated area (designated area.... ha!). It would be awesome to have some sort of organizational wall thingy that they have in the Container Store catalogs. Now if only I could sell some of my art and become rich and famous, then I could afford organizational tools, haha.
At least I have a hobby, and I have fun doing it, right?

what a great thread! sadly, i have too many projects that will go unfinished anytime soon to mention in one post. but one that is driving me insane! i've been sewing for a long time (before i could drive, lol) and i've never tried to tackle a handbag. from other crafty ladies i have heard that it is fairly simple - just like decorating a square or rectangle - no biggie right? so i tried it...
yeah right! it seems like it should be so simple. but everytime i approach my sewing table with that look in my eye like i'm gonna conquer that darn purse all i can hear is that vintage cotton laughing at me! it is a sorry site to see a woman and her sewing machine beaten by such a tempting fabric. but the day will come when i finish that handbag. the fabric may not be in style anymore and i may have lost all desire to carry handbags because the weight weighs down my arthritic ridden old lady shoulders - but i will complete that damn handbag!
