Post Subject: knickers
I read a topic about lingerie in Sewing World but it was dated 2003 and it said there was a pattern for turning t-shirts into briefs. Any ideas out there as we are desperately short of knicker pattern ideas in England. Why can't you buy knicker and lingerie patters as easily as any other pattern I would like to know?

I have used the patterns from the following site and they work out fantastic, best of all they're free and easy to follow! DIY Undies

problem solved! a lady from sewing world commons walked me through it over the phone. i'd made two major errors: first, i was indeed threading the needle from the back vs. the front. second, there's a step where you have to bring the needle down to pull up the bobbin thread, and then pull all of that back into a tail. i hadn't drawn that back. so no wonder it was all screwy. so i'm sewing fine, and i even did some reverse/locking stitches, AND i changed presser feet (which was super easy). now i have the 1/4 inch foot on, which will be good for piecing when i'm working on quilt tops. the only thing i'm still scared about is changing needles, but chances are it won't be so bad.

Sewing - I have yet to memorize how to thread a bobbin or get a stitch through without clogging up the needle. At it probably didn't help that my instructor was the Nick Burns of the sewing world! Or that my grandma tried to teach me that and crochet and gave up because I was "hopeless." Actually it turns out that she was left handed, so that makes it hard to teach it to a righty like me.
Power Tools - my father just gave me his old drill and stud finder so that I could finally start putting up hooks and things in my place. I love seeing projects where people do things like turn old household objects into lamps. But part of me wonders about what sort of damage I could cause with using a drill!
