My best thing is the shawl I finished yesterday, a feather and fan comfort shawl knit in a trekking xxl sock yarn.
I've been knitting for some time now, but this is the first thing that I have been completly satisfied with and want to keep. And that is saying alot :)

Thank you! This was great! I saw that someone used Patons SWS, which is definitely something I could find at the cheap yarn store, and that someone else used sock yarn. Now I feel inspired to start knitting again! (I've been working on the same plastic bag purse since May.)

I did some practice socks just in lambs pride just to see if I could do it on bigger DPNs. Now I am using Sockotta sock yarn (45% cotton, 40% superwash and 15% nylon) in a pretty blue and white for the MIL for Christmas on size 2 DPNs. I REALLY want to get socks soar on circulars( the book) and try some on that but I felt like I should get a couple pair under my belt first!

okay, in bad message board protocal, i'm responding to my own message.
you know what? if my siblings would rather have me spend $30 on dishes or something for them, that's fine by me. i spent $20 on the sock yarn, and then it will take me probably close to 30 hours to make them. $30 and i get my time back to make something for myself? sounds like a good deal to me.
ETA - xuli, my sister this year bought me a ticket to go see avenue Q with her, which was over $100. i told her i couldn't afford to buy her something equivalent, and she's fine with that. she's always told me to give within my means, and not to go into debt for presents. but it doesn't seem to me like she values handmade stuff as it should be, either.
