In brief:
WHAT: City of Craft
WHO: 60+ craft vendors, community groups, installation artists & workshop leaders
WHEN: Saturday December 1, 2007, 11am-8pm
WHERE: Theatre Centre, located at 1087 Queen Street West at Dovercourt.
WEB: http://cityofcraft.com
In not-so-brief:
Come dive into Toronto's crafty cultural landscape at City of Craft, a day long opportunity to buy, observe, experience, chat about, share and reimagine all things handmade. Not your run-of-the mill craft show, this dynamic happening will feature craft-based installations, demos, and free workshops, alongside a curated craft fair filled with contemporary, stylish, and offbeat handmade goodies.
You'll also have the chance to learn about great local classes, studios, resources, and craft based projects, getting you in the mood to make stuff and make stuff happen. Eager beavers will be rewarded with swag bags designed and screenprinted for City of Craft by local label Schoolyard (Katie Chan and Hilary Dennis ) & chockful of indie craft goodness from multiple vendors and sponsors.
Event highlights include:
* 60+ craft vendors and exhibitors from Toronto and Montreal selling awesome handmade art, craft & fashion and promoting their craft-based initiatives
* Soft City, a plush cityscape that invites Torontonians to reconsider their relationship to the place they live
* StreetKnit's hand-knit house, an inventive endeavor to bring awareness to issues of homelessness in the city (Donations of hand knit garments will be accepted at the event).
* Perusal of Toronto Zine Library's entire collection of zines in the cozy reading lounge.
* Ample opportunities to make stuff:
-a crochet workshop taught by Shannon Gerrard (let's just say it's connected to her latest project) 1-2pm
-a craft materials swap run by the workroom & Sew Be It Studio - 2:30-4pm***
-a make-you-own gift wrap session hosted by Toronto Church of Craft 4:30-7pm
*** To participate in the swap bring fabric or yarn to swap and canned goods to donate the Daily Food Bank. Leftover materials will be donated to charity.
Please share this invite with craft-inclined friends & family, or anyone you know who might enjoy finding unique handmade gifts in a decidedly un-mall-like atmosphere.

I want to throw a naked lady party (clothing swap), but run it auction style, and then donate all unwanted clothing to hurricane relief, but also try and incorporate small amounts of money in the bidding (all of which would also go to hurricane relief). I think there was a piece about how to run this kind of swap "auction style", but I can't find it. Anyone have any good ideas on how to make this work (and also make it wicked fun and raise some money for a great cause!)? Any ideas would be welcome!

Post Subject: Pre warning! post-holidays crafty stuff swap party
An early warning for anyone in the Bristol, UK area- after a great Stitch n Bitch at here yesterday we have decided that we are going to hold a post-holiday season crafty stuff swap party. I know i've got a whole heap of things i've put aside 'just in case' and i also know that partners in craft Erin and Teacake have things in their stashes that I secretly covet- so what are we going to do about this? Well- sometime in the new year we are all getting together with our bits and bobs that don't quite do it for us in the crafty sense and we're going to go swap crazy- kind of a naked lady party of crafts. It will probably be on a Sunday when we are holding a Stitch and Bitch anyway- but keep an eye out for updates from me as we confirm things a bit more firmly.

Post Subject: Your Crafty Business Story
Hey all!
I'm thinking of starting my own crafty business. I wanted to hear some experiences/stories/advice from other women who have been in the craft business.
a few basic questions:
-How long have you been selling your wares, and what do you make?
-Where do you sell them? Your own site, on consignment, on Ebay, at swap meets?
-Do you make any kind of profit? If so, is it enough to craft full-time?
-Any little helpful hints you can think of. (and the best business books, websites, etc.)
Thanks so much!!

Okay my friend might kill me for inviting total strangers from the internet into her home, but here it goes:
We're having a Naked Lady Party sometime after Dec. 13th. We are in the Boston area - in fact, Jamaica Plain to be exact. If you have lots of clothes and/or accesories that you are just not inspired by and you want to swap them, please email me: bluealvarez@bluealvarez.com. We can talk, and if you have pure intentions I'll give you an address. ;) Bonus points for liking the Red Sox, or Miller High Life, or both.
Anything not taken home by guests naturally goes to Goodwill (or Planet Aid, etc.)

I saw there was a photography swap on Glitter last month, but I was moving, so couldn't participate. So now I wanted to do another one.
You would send in 5 pictures to moi (all the same or different!) & I would mix them up & send back 5 new ones. They don't have to be super great photos that you've printed yourself, they can be any ones you think are neat, in color or black & white, in any size. Is anyone else interested in this?
I recently started doing darkroom stuff again, after a long break, & I would love to see others' photos!
How about I make a deadline for signing up the end of June, & then mailing your pictures out in July sometime.
What do you guys think?

Posted by artgeek on 2006-12-07 20:44:39
Post Subject: EOY Wrap-up & Suggestions
Hi. I was browsing the Mod forum and thought we needed a kind of round-up of ideas and some info about where we were on various changes to the forums. The following is the list I came up with, but I'd be grateful to hear other peoples' ideas/suggestions:
1. Reported Posts link
The green link that used to be at the bottom of every page is gone. What's up?
2. Reworking Community Announcements
In the fall, we discussed making the forum "Community Announcements & Suggestions" into two separate forums--one being a special announcement forum that only admins, editors, and mods could post to (but users could reply to those posts), one being for community suggestions about the site. I thought agreement had been made that these changes were good, we just needed Demetri to make the changes and the editors to announce them. What's the status on this? Do we still want to do this? Could it be achieved early 2007?
3. Search terms highlight unreadable
I made a post about this back in September, and we learned changes would have to be made to the stylesheet. Any progress on this or an idea of when it could be completed?
4. Spam prevention
We discussed deleting user accounts with URLs in the profile, but no posts and no login for the last six months. Was this ever done? We also talked about instituting a rule that users had to be around for a month or make a certain number of posts before a URL could be included in their profile. What's the status of this?
5. Blog tags
Demetri was thinking of doing this, but only got feedback from me. Has it been scrapped? What other things couldd we do to improve the blog section? (I previously suggested being able to friend or bookmark other users to keep track of their blogs better.)
6. Swap Feedback system
Some users had requested this, and we provided Demetri with some feedback on what the system would require and introduced him to swap lingo (eg, "flakers" ;). Any progress on this front? Anything mods or users can do to assist in moving this project forward?
7. Deleting blog entries
We discovered only admins can delete offensive/inappopriate blog entries and uploads to the picture section, and Demetri suggested extending the ability to mods. Any progress on this front?
8. Mod contact info
I was thinking recently (as part of the liquid embroidery debacle), it might be good if the mods were able to contact each other easily if/when they wanted to communicate about something going on on GC. To that end, I'm posting a new thread with my contact info (e-mail, plus IM); if other mods want to join in, that would be great.

Post Subject: Highlighting request
Hey Demetri & Lance--
This is a non-mod question, but I thought I'd give it a go. Is it possible for you to tweak the color of the highlight in the forums?
For example, if I search for "swap ornaments," the first result is this thread. And instead of being highlighted, the words "swap" and "ornament" appear in white text throughout the thread, making odd gaps in the conversation.
Is this a setting on getcrafty or is it something to do with how I have my system colors set up?
Thanks for looking into this.
Cheers / Angelique

great to hear that it can be done!
i think it is acceptable and desireable to have a system that makes sure flakers are "outed" so that people don't go into a swap and end up disappointed.
I also think it is important that there is a system of review-- i.e. that if someone is listed as a flaker they can be removed from the list by explaining themselves. It seems to me that Back-Tack handled this very well-- there was no name-calling, just a list of flakers posted where everyone could see it, and people were removed from the list as they proved their swap package had been received.
I also think maybe we should have some "swap guidelines", perhaps a sticky in the forum suggesting organizational ways to make sure flaking is discouraged -- i.e. "post a picture of what you've received and the name of your swap partner" or some other visual confirmation of swappy goodness.
Do any super-swappy mods want to mock up something like that? I would be willing to, but I don't feel experienced enough as an organizer to lay out guidelines.

Maybe this is a glitch, but I was looking for old posts about the Christmas ornament swap, to see when it got going last year and to see the fabulous pictures that were posted... for some reason, the results for "ornament" aren't showing any threads from crafty swaps, and that forum also isn't an option when you select where to search.

Post Subject: Request for swapping feedback system
A user started a discussion here about implementing a swap feedback system so people could rate their swapping experiences, specifically whether or not people followed through and to acknowledge people who were great swapping partners.
I don't know if this is possible using the current board software, but wanted to make Demetri & co. aware of the request. Even if it's not possible to create such a system, the members are also talking about creating informal threads listing "flakers" and good swap partners. I think the co-editors and mods should hash out whether or not this is acceptable before it happens.

Hi,
Okay, I am ready to organize my next swap -- this one is a little more ambitious. Here is what I am thinking. Everyone who is participating will make one item for everyone else who is participating so that everyone who is participating will get MULTIPLE items.
If you are interested, e-mail me with your address and the item you'd be making -- some ideas:
soap
journals
acessories
jewelry
handmade cards
candles
cds
etc...
I will send out the list of everyone participating in the swap (including addresses) along with a list of 'rules'
You'll be responsible for making / buying your items and mailing them. You must mail to all participants.
I am going to cap the swap at TEN people so that it doesn't get too out of hand.
If you are interested, please e-mail me by Sunday the 20th at stellagal78@yahoo.com I'll send the list Monday the 21st. Plan to send your items by March 7th (that gives everyone two weeks).

Posted by kdaum on 2005-03-08 14:47:58
Post Subject: Quilt Block Swap
Hello Everyone,
This is my first time putting together a swap, so please bare with me.
Back when I was little, I always remember attending my mom's quilt club and seeing the other ladies' work. I remember that they used to swap blocks to use in quilts. Don't fret, that is not exactly what I had in mind.
What I am thinking is this:
Each participant makes one 12" block, which must be completely sewn-So no gluing or stapling. You must do some sort of embellishment to it with cross-stitch, needlework, yarn, applique, adding buttons, etc. The only other pre-requisite is that the base fabric/fabrics be made of 100% cotton and that the piece be hand-washable. So stay away from sequins, please.
How much work you put into it is purely up to you; but just think of what you would want to get in return. You will have a month to finish and then ship it to a fellow swapper. If everyone is honorable (which I know you all are), you in turn will receive a block as well. This swap is a little more complex; but I think in the end everyone will be happy with what they receive.
If you are interested or have any questions, please let me know.
The deadline to sign up will be March 15th. At that time I will email you the name of the person that you should send your block to. It won't necessarily be the same person that is sending theirs to you.
Thanks, Kristy

Post Subject: Regional CD swap
Hi, all -
I had a brainstorm while listening to my iTrip in the car just now (seriously, I love my iPod with a passion bordering on madness). Anyway, I got the idea for a regional CD swap. Basically, this would require each participant to make a mix of local music from their area - new music, old music, whatever. The definition would be pretty loose - you could focus on your city, your state, your basic area (New England, Southwest, etc.), your country (for our international craftistas ;) ), or you could even pick the place you grew up but no longer live. The key is to create a collection with a real sense of place. Would anyone be up for this? The structure will kind of depend on the number of people who want to be involved, but it would probably work out to everyone making and receiveing 3-4 CDs. If you want to participate, PM me by June 17 with your name and address, and then I'll send you the info on the people you'll be sending to.
Party on.

Hi...I am new here...but I was wondering how many of you may know about the book trading site called "Paper Back Swap"? I have just been a member for a couple of months but love it and have recieved a couple of dozen books that I have really enjoyed as you can request books in the genre that you prefer.
What you do is list any books you would want to swap...and then when others request them...you ship them media mail, which costs $1.50 . then whed the person recieves the book you sent...they mark it recieved and you get a credit that you can use to then request someone eles's book. I love this site and want to let others know it is out there.
If any of you would like to check it out it is at
www.paperbackswap.com and tell them that artsy897 told you about it...
This looks like a great site also and I am looking forward to checking all of it out as I am into crafts and art also...so I am off to see what I can find...have a nice day everyone...Linda

Post Subject: marble magnets *glue* problem
I've read up on marble magnets information from cabochon to square clear tiles, but all posts seem to have the same problem---the silicone-based glues (like E6000) they highly recommend turn yellow over time.
I don't know if it's the glue or exposure to sunlight that's turning other people's marble magnets yellow or not, but I was wondering what the solution to this is?
One person said acrylic seal---what brand or form, it didn't say. I have workable fixatif & super surface sealer, but I don't know if either of them will work. :( Plus, it's just an extra step in the process~
So I searched for archival glass glue & came up with YES! glue
http://www.joann.com/catalog.jhtml?CATID=82040&PRODID=145816&rId=GOBASECI Has anyone used it before? It seems ideal! Dries clear, can be used with glass & paper ...
Any help would be highly appreciated! I really want to give some marble magnets as gifts or possibly swap them, but I don't want them to crumble or fade in a year or two. :/
Thank you so much!!! :D

Post Subject: Mix CD/tape swap!!! (Deadline February 1)
Based on an idea from our fabulous Finnish friend, Koria!...
I am organizing an international mix CD/tape swap!
The guidelines are as follows, but they are open to suggestions:
1. Your tape should mostly include music from your country or city, but you are not completely bound to that. Put anything you like on the CD/tape, just make it something that shows your personality, your tastes and favorites, or the flavor of your country/city. Make it so someone could get to know you or your home from the CD/tape. Anything goes! But please include in your response to me if you have a major problem with profanity or anything like that, and I'll be sure to tell your partners.
2. Your mix tape/CD should include a card with the names of each song and the artist. (This doesn't have to be difficult-- a simple index card would suffice.)
3. I'm open to other suggestions... any ideas?
If you would like to participate, please pm me or email me at hppyjessa at yahoo dot com with the following information before February 1st...
Name & getcrafty name
Snail mail address (including country)
Email address
What you prefer (CD/tape) to send
What you prefer (CD/tape) to recieve
Any other suggestions
Also, please tell me what you think of this idea: arranging groups of four, so you will ultimately recieve three mix tape/CDs? Also, with this system, if someone doesn't follow through on the swap (LAME) you will still get two amazing mix tapes/CDs from your getcrafty friends!
Let me know, guys, and remember to respond by pm or email before February 1st if you want to participate! Thanks!
Peace,
Jessa

Post Subject: Valentine's Day Craft Swap
Hi everyone,
I just participated in my first ever craft swap for the holidays and it was a blast. I'd like to organize a Valentine's Swap.
Here is how it works:
1. E-mail me if you are interested by January 21. On the 21st I will e-mail everyone with the name of the person who was selected for them.
2. By February 10th you send your person a crafty Valentine's Day package -- it can be pretty much anything -- homemade Valentine's, soap, candles, pink and red stuff, heart iron-on patches, yummy bath products...you get the idea!
Everyone will get a fun package filled with crafty love!
E-mail me at stellagal78@yahoo.com to sign up; please signm up ONLY if you can commit and follow through - it would be really sad if someone didn't get a package who signed up. Also, please be sure that you can send your package BY FEBRUARY 10TH so it is received in time for the Big Day.
Thanks!
Beth

Post Subject: To people who revamp old thrift purses- question!
I have some old purses I'd like to decorate with fabric cutouts and stuff and I
need some ideas for a good sealer. The bags are patent or vinyl material. I once used Krylon spray and it was a terrible sticky mess. What do most people use to coat the bag after they decorate it? Also, if I used paint on it, what kind of paint should I use? Do I coat the whole bag or just the decoarated parts? How do I do that?
I'm in a purse swap so I want my bag to look really nice.
Thank you!

Hey folks,
I found a book of patterns for weaving of textiles at a book-give-away over the weekend. I don't do that kind of work myself, but I grabbed it thinking I could redirect it to some lucky craftista from the boards.
Does anyone engage in this kind of work? Anyone want to swap for my book?
Cheers,
del

Unfortunately I don't have any books that I could swap (almost everything I own is still in storage in another country).
Is there anything other than a book you need/want? Or would you be willing to sell it? I live in Australia, but will be happy to pay postage fees!
Otherwise, could you let me know the title, perhaps I can find it on alibris.com.

swaps based on music! so if your sister likes evanesence (sp?) and you like the beastie boys, there's some level of thinking and empathy involved.
swaps based on children or future hopes.
swaps based on planned trips together ... you're going to the west coast? a West coast swap, with a Dre anthem CD ... or a shirt with an ironed on pic of the Santa Monica pier.
a journal swap. or an art book swap. "when i was 5 and you were two, i thought that you..." "here is my pencil interpretation of that dinosaur you drew when you were in 4th grade..."
i miss being geographically close to my sister. i bet you can't tell ;)

did I dream that there was a website where you could swap your craft UFO"s (un finished objects) for someone elses???? I thought I read it on here a few months ago, but I can not find it to save my soul....
If I did just dream it, I need to create that site!
Since my website is going down, I have a number of cut out purse pieces I need to get rid off...I don't want to make anymore purses right now, but can't throw them away either-most of them are cut out of vintage fabrics. IF I finished them, I can get $30-50 each...I have no time or space to keep finish or save the pieces...I have too many things to get rid of LOL.
So if anyone knows of where I can trade this stuff=lemme know!!!

do you want yarn to match old lots, or are you just looking for cheap yarn? if you are trying to find discontinued yarn to complete a project, elann.com and the Knitty board have areas where you can ask people if they have that yarn to swap or sell.
if you just want cheap yarn, discountyarnsale.com sells whole bags, and they have a variety of discontinued yarns and colors in the "bargain bin" section. www.yarn.com (Webs) also has sections for discontinued or otherwise heavily discounted yarn.

Post Subject: Aussie Thrift Exchange - any Australians here interested?
Hi there,
I am wanting to start a Livejournal Community for Australians to sell or exchange clothing/shoes/accessories - where one can post pics and name their price: kind of like Ebay but without the hassle of exchange rates, o/s payment/postage, etc. You can name your price so there is no bidding, more like first in best dressed. Otherwise you can opt to post things you are willing to swap- so almost like an online Naked Lady Party! You don't really have to be on Livejournal to take part as you can still post anonymously in order to give your email address to correspond with the seller. Does this make sense/ is anybody interested??
I have seen many of these communities on LJ, however they are for o/s and there is still the hassle of different money/postage etc, i thought it would be good to make an Australian version. Oh yeah, you can sell/swap things you make, it is not really limited to clothing either, but that would be the main focus. I got the idea after looking at the vogue.com.au forums where there is a For Sale thread. However, everyone there is very interested in labels/brands and i wanted this to be more of an online op-shop type thing! I hope it appeals to people so i can get the thing started. Also, if you have any other suggestions/ know of sites to generate more interest, that would be great. Thanks!

So do you think a gmail swap group would be cool? Since I guess getcrafty won't get an entire forum and other websites *coughnervousness* are never working. Plus we could block swappers who don't send in what they're supposed to or make a thread about bad members so we have an ongoing list of people to not swap with. Yay or nay?

i'm not sure about existing quilting clubs in downtown t.o., but you could get in touch with the textile museum of canada (http://www.textilemuseum.ca) and ask if they know of any (they have lots of volunteers who are quilters i think). there is also a quilt shop on mt. pleasant near davisville that you could contact (not downtown downtown, but i think this is the closest quiltshop to downtown downtown): Quilter's Quarters (595 Mount Pleasant Rd., 416-487-1047)
another option is starting one up yourself. i am also a beginner quilter (very into modern quilts like Denyse Schmidt and quilted accessories) and really eager to learn more. i would love to do something like a quilt-along - choosing a project with a group and coming together to check out each other's progress, swap tips, etc. i just finished a big project and need to hibernate for a bit, but would be into something like this eventually. PM me if you would like to talk about this idea some more.
