Maybe this is a glitch, but I was looking for old posts about the Christmas ornament swap, to see when it got going last year and to see the fabulous pictures that were posted... for some reason, the results for "ornament" aren't showing any threads from crafty swaps, and that forum also isn't an option when you select where to search.

the thing was that we were basically assigned certain forums. like i got domestic bliss, share a craft, and consuming pleasures. but this wasn't indicated under the subject heading in the index of forums home. we're just basically supposed to concentrate out non-spam detection moderator duties in those areas which we were assigned. then the crafty swaps forum was a new one, and for_esme was the one assigned.... so that's the deal on that. i would like it if we were all included in that forum, that way we can all moderate/remove spam/move topics as needed.

Posted by Ratti Pillo on 2006-04-22 15:04:33
Post Subject:
whenever i /or my group holds clothing swaps we usually do it in down the middle of calm and polite and free-for-all. each person who brings a pile of clothes gets to 'present' his/her pile. we all then go at it, and if there are two people who want the same thing we have a 'try-off'; both of them tries it on and we decide who it looks nicer/flatters better/etc. i've never had any problems with it. i also keep accessories at the end- shoes, jewelry, scarves, etc. and we try to find stuff to match our new outfits. keep lots of drinks and food around, and perhaps a game or craft , discussion, etc to do or have later so it gives an incentive to not stretch out the swap for hours. themed swaps are fun too (depending on people's availbility)- housewares, evening dresses/old prom dresses, etc.
one thing though i've found is that if you have a wide range of different bodies, you should try your hardest to represent all of them. it can get hard, especially if you might have one plus size lady, or one size one lady, they can feel left out because there's nothing there for them. but if you can invite a range of people that would be for the best. encourage people to bring clothes that's not necessarily theirs (well from friends or family or whomever, that might not be able to make it, willing to donate to the naked lady party, are not interested in going but has lots of clothes, etc) and this usually can help widen the range of styles and sizes.

Personally, I'm not big on live chat.
I quite like the marketplace idea, but then I don't have my own site (or sell anything), I guess it matters more what people who actually sell things think about it. The 'Girls Gone Crafty' board seems to fill some of the function of alerting people about your business.
On swapping, I don't know about having a seperate area for this. I guess I just don't check discussion boards (and all their different forums) regularly enough, and so I often find that I miss out on swaps I would be interested in, because they are posted up on a dedicated swaps forum, instead of as part of the general chat forum.

Post Subject:
# What does word pair "craft group" mean to you?
(If the are other terms in english, please tell me. After all it isn't my mother language.)
# What does word "craft" mean to you?
# Have you ever participated in an offline craft group?
(If you have, how old were you then, what organization organized it and why did you participate?)
# What kind of thoughts do you have about crafty groups existence?
(Why do they exist? Why does world need them?)
A craft group to me seems about the same as what you describe. Could be anything. The stitch and bitch, moms making salt dough ornaments, sisters and cousins completing a quilt or scrap book, a class in stamping, kindergarteners sand painting. I suppose in a broader sense, the swaps from boards like this one are craft groups. The people are separated but interact offline in crafty pursuit.
I've done many, but am not really involved in any group now. Lots of church bazaar stuff from childhood on, garden design with the Latin Club at my high school last century, ikebana classes, book production, one on one instruction in all sorts of things, actual graded classes in school within the Art Department, public displays of creations both craft and art, seasonal presentations and lots more... I've done this at any age up to my present late 40s. With family or schoolmates or neighbors or coworkers. Years ago with my church. Sometimes the goal is clearcut, sometimes not.
Craft to me has to involve the creation of something useful or attractive by an individual or sometimes a group. It is not mass manufactured, although parts of it may be. A craft group could be working on the same one project or individual takes on the topic, or completely separate things.
I like that crafty groups and orgs encourage others to make use of their own imaginations, that the more people do more things, the more relaxed they are. It's very therapeutic for me, and for others.
At the fabric store, people are as obnoxious as they are anywhere in retail. But occasionally you get to learn something new, or see one customer help another even though they are strangers. Unfortunately, so many of them expect my small store to be like Walmart when they want and like their own personal savant when they want. Can't have it both ways. If you really want my help in determining what color brocade would best match your paint chips then you shouldn't bitch about having to wait at the cutting counter or the register. If you really want rock bottom prices you can't expect the poorly paid clerk to have any idea how to use the product. End of rant.
More people crafting means more self sufficiency and more self confidence. That's gotta be good.
Right now we are facing another hurricane and all that it entails. Yet people don't know how to light a charcoal fire, don't know how to safeguard candles, or warm water in the sun for bathing, or conserve their energy. They do laughable things with the fear of the hurricane. Yeah, go ahead and fight over a full tank of gas at the pumps! You aren't going to need it for several days, and if you evacuate, a half tank will get you wherever you need to go. People are coming in to the fabric store and yelling because we don't sell batteries or kerosene, or tents. And still others are buying crafting materials so they won't get cabin fever during the expected power outages.

Post Subject: Hello from Montreal!
I just signed up to join this community today. :)
A little while ago I started getting into swaps (Swap-Bot.com) and was looking around for other swap sites. I came across getcrafty and was really happy to see that it's not only a craft-related site, but it's so organized and interesting!
Although I'm a freelance writer and editor, I love to craft in my free time (baby quilts, patchwork totes, pillows, and other small projects) and have been enjoying exploring other crafters' blogs. I've started selling some stuff on etsy.com (sold one pincushion!) but what I haven't been able to do until now is become part of a crafters' community. I checked out craftster.org and found some helpful tutorials but somehow this site looks like it will be a better fit for me. :)
So... I look forward to getting involved and getting to know some of you, as time permits.
Cheerio! :)

almost all the swaps I've been in have had international swappers. re: the cost -- it's not that it's not worth it, it's that sometimes people can't afford it. but usually there are plenty of people swapping, so it's just a matter of matching the right people up.
as far as my personal experience goes, I've sent to New Zealand and Canada without problems. in one recent swap, I had to ask when I signed up that I be partnered with someone in the US because I was low on money that month, but it wasn't a big deal, there were plenty of people in the swap who could handle the international shipping.
I'm not sure if that answered your questions -- let me know if I've left anything out! :)

Create a handwritten letter in any style, along with a paper/card frame with a snapshot of yourself (or something that represents you, if you like) so that we can all put a "face" to the name :) Embellish any way you choose. All swaps should go out on or after the 16th of March.

Yes! It would be much easier to browse and join swaps that are currently happening. I always use the "view posts since your last visit" tool, which means I see EVERYTHING. But there are times when I specifically want to get involved in a swap and I can't find them. This would also eliminate the potential for two of the same swaps happening at the same time.

View entire thread: how does organized swapping work?
Posted by moon_lemming on 2005-04-23 14:50:37
Post Subject:
I copied and pasted this from another thread from a few months ago that had the same question (so if you see the words "coin purse" just substitute whatever you would think of swapping):
Re: organization, my suggestions (and only suggestions, because there might be a better way, I'm not a very organized person): Post a topic that says "coin purse swap" or something like that and put the basics in your post:
*what we're swapping,
*how you want people to send their info to you (e-mail or pm),
*what info you need (real name, address, e-mail address, usually),
*the deadline date for sign-up, and
*the deadline date for sending out (about two weeks after the sign-up deadline, usually, although longer is good, too!).
Then when everyone's signed up, usually the swap organizer will put a list up with the getcrafty user names (NOT real names) of everyone who's on board so people can doublecheck and make sure they're on the list if they signed up.
After the swap sign-up is over, the swap organizer e-mails (or pm's) each person the name and address of the person they're sending to, and sometimes lists who's sending to whom in the getcrafty topic as well.
Another way to do it is for the swap organizer to send everyone her (the organizer's) address and have them mail their swap stuff and some cash for shipping to her. Then the organizer mails out packages to everyone. This is best for swaps that involve each person making stuff for five other people or whatever. Also, keep in mind that if there are people in different countries, the cash-for-shipping thing could get tricky.
I'm sure some of that doesn't make sense because I'm bad at explaining stuff and someone else probly knows something I left out. But I hope it helps a little! :)

I've been Scroogey this year, as well. This semester, work has been a gigantic trial of adolescent foolishness the likes of "Jack Ass: The Director's Cut". Add recurrent immobilizing scourge and friends' assorted trauma and drama. Mix well.
To jump start my holiday mood, started from scratch on the Christmas tree. New ornaments. Non-traditional colors. Invader Zim motif. Kids wacky excited by it. So frickin' homely it makes you laugh. Boy #2 who hates to sing belted out the Invader Zim carols whilst decorating: "Bow down! Bow down! Before the power of San-Ta! Be crushed! Be crushed by His Jolly Boots of Doom!" Did I mention his rousing guitar rendition of "Good King Wencewhoziwhatsit" complete with distortion and feedback? #2 will gladly go caroling with you! Of course, you'll be forced to sing his twisted renditions.
Assembling swaps for Monday Mailing forcing me to be both crafty and cheerful. Who wants a sad swap? "Swaps of Obligation" sounds like something rejected from a Greek Tragedy. "Thanks. You shouldn't have. Really. I mean it."
Baking treats is soothing to the soul and makes the home smell yummy. Bored and grumpy? Make a totally non-Christmas/Christian treat from another culture or faith tradition. Christmas has become a dumping ground of sorts for all manner of Mid- Winter/Solstice observances. Candles and spices. Leg lamps. Whatever.
Sprinkling of Bad Taste is waaay more fun than Good Taste. Who would you really like to have over for Holiday Meal: John Waters or Martha Stewart?
Hang with Quornflour and have no choice but to Experience the Holiday, kinda like pink gamma rays. Resistance is Futile.
Make it your own!

hey all,
i understand your frustrations! believe me, as a moderator of the forums it's just as annoying to me, if not more so. i've made a few suggestions to the administrators, perhaps eliminating the "guest" feature on the swaps forum is a good idea. i'll bring that up, too. another idea is to require guest posters to type in a word or series of numbers to confirm that they're a person and not a spamming computer, but that wouldn't eliminate all the spam, since some of the spammers even go so far as to sign up for accounts.
it's a continuing problem, but i'll keep doing my best to delete the posts as soon as i see them! and maybe we can get some help from the administrators to see what else can be done.
oh, and if you ever see a problem thread go ahead and pm one of us. more than likely we just haven't logged in yet that day, it's always helpful to get a heads-up.

There was a recycled clothes swap? I guess I didn't pay attention 'cause I don't do swaps very often. But I love the idea of taking someone else's stuff, making something new out of it and giving it back. And I've been having lots of fun with recycled-clothes projects lately. If there's another swap like this, I want in!
Nikki-shell: It's my understanding that Koolaid (I'm guessing any brand of powdered drink mix, without sugar already added, works the same) is only colorfast on animal fibers like wool. That's why it washed out of your cotton top. But yeah, another kind of dye will fix it right up!

Sometimes I check in on Supernaturale's glitter boards just to see if anything's up (swaps, info about websites I shop at that are run by glitterati, etc., to see what's up with glitterati I semi-know). I used to lurk on digsmagazine.com's and televisionwithoutpity.com's forums, but don't have time these days. Sometimes I lurk on chicklit.com, but I usually end up with a really long list of books to read, and am waiting until my to-be-read pile gets a little smaller before I go back there.
Oh, and I posted briefly on venuszine.com, but that was way back when they first started up the forum, and I didn't stick around long.
Hope there's something you enjoy in there!

The other ornament swaps I participated in we were divided into groups of 4-6. Each person does one less than the number of the group. If there are 6 people in your group you only do 5. Then you ship to the organizer and include a few dollars so the organizer can ship your ornaments back. The organizer distributes the ornaments in your group and ship them back to you.
I would be willing to participate in this style. there's no way I can make 20 or so ornaments, but 5 is a doable number. :)

How to make friends? Um, I just tend to smile and talk alot. I chat up the folks at the cutting table at Joann's. Garden centers. Bookstores, "Wow! I've heard about that <book>What have you heard?" Once in the crafting section of Borders, another patron was looking for a book by a Getcrafty regular, so we started chatting and shared giggles over the Taxidermy(!) book in the craft section.
Joining swaps is another good way to meet like minded folks.
Kids and Dogs get you out and interacting. You meet all manner of people through your kids. Ahem. In my area, hard to walk my dogs without folks stopping to pet or chat up their monster labrador stories.
Don't have a local craft group? Start your own!
Try something new, out of your comfort zone. Throw yourself into it. Especially if you really suck at it. Experts will always want to "help","share advice", "Here, let me show you.."

I can't decide which way to vote; on the one hand, it would be nice to have a centralized place for swaps, instead of having them scattered around different categories. On the other hand, too many forums leads to madness, and the boards are so low-key that checking each forum out isn't a huge time drain. Maybe instead of starting a new forum, we could agree on which one to keep swap stuff on (say, Craft-Up or Share A Craft)?

- swaps force to you work within perimeters of design, budget, time, whatnot. Last year's year long swap forced me to work outside my comfort zone with colors and my swap partner's taste. And she has those oh so stunning coasters to prove I am not adept at all crafts. Yikes! Those were homely!

An easy way to participate in swaps without giving out your address is to get a PO box.
I don't think they cost the same everywhere, but mine was 18 bucks for 6 months for a decent sized box. And if a package won't fit, they'll put in a little note and you can grab it from the main postal counter.

If you want to participate, but don't want to give out you home address you can get a PO box pretty cheap. I have the smallest box in an out of the way post office and it costs me $20 a year.

great topic!
i second all of the advice here. do not give out your real name or talk too specifically about friends, family, jobs, etc. do not ever admit anything illegal you may have done. do not give out your address for swaps, unless you have *known* the person for a long time. personally, i would no longer give someone my address unless i'd known them for a year or more. and i still use my work address, abbrieviated without the company name. also, i would not give my address to someone for a swap if the swap entailed them giving it to someone else.
usernames: don't use the same username all over the internet. i use this user name only on craft sites. i have other identities for other hobbies. it's *so* easy to find people with distinctive user names when they use them all over. they are making virtual histories of themselves for anyone to find.
why all these precautions? well, in the four years i've been on glitter/getcrafty, i've been stalked not once, but twice. i've seen other posters who gave out their addresses someone be hurt and scared to find out the person was a troll, including an extremely recent incident involving a lot of people. i have friends who also got into trouble with jobs for what they posted on the internet.
bottom line - be safe, above everything.
ETA: not to be too much of a downer - one thing i have found over the years that is safe is meeting people in person, which is kind of funny. i've never regretted meeting anyone in real life, and though i go through stages where i don't post about our SnBs, for the most part, i think it's pretty safe.

Nat, your new house is so cute!
I'm interested in a swap, depending on when, too.
To the people who asked...
basically it's like a garage sale except everything is FREE!! The catch is that you too have to bring things. I think some people limit the swaps to clothes, but in the past we Chicago gals have included everything from bad Donald Sutherland videos to kitchen stuff to...I already forgot.
But I think those of us here that have swapped together before (me, moonrat, peanut, anybody else?) would agree that pretty much anything goes as long as you could re-use it in some way and it's not just straight-up trash.
We haven't really swapped new things that we made ourselves though.

p.s. Let's not be TOO nice about people not sending their swaps out. It really sucks putting together a nice package and not receiving one in return! I don't think people should be blacklisted per se, but I think there should be some restrictions on swaps. For example swap managers should keep them small enough to handle. 50 swappers is a bit much... 10-20 is probably okay.

One of my favorite things about getcrafty? I have never ever seen a "which craftista is the coolest" type popularity thread!
bwahaha! and amen.
I just like the vibe here better. I think the only time the division gets kind of sticky is when someone inadvertently posts something that makes it sound like GetCrafty is a fallback board for Supernaturale posters. I go to Supernaturale for the swaps and sometimes cooking stuff, and very rarely when I'm very very bored and no one's on here, I'll go through La Vida Crafty, but it's very overwhelming.
I used to not mention SN over here because it felt like all the SN posters were just waiting to hear GC folk say something negative (I think that was just my own perception), but I've grown accustomed to being part of both worlds. Although a much smaller part of the SN world than the GC one.
I hope some of that made sense to someone besides me. Heh.
(I don't really think of the SN boards as Glitter, I think of the old boards here as Glitter, and the SN boards as Supernaturale, maybe that's weird, but I just feel like they're two completely different things.)

Hee, ditto! (no internet on Tuesdays.) That would be a fun swap! I can't sew, so it wouldn't be one I made, but I'm sure I could find a cool one somewhere around here.
Re: organization, my suggestions (and only suggestions, because there might be a better way, I'm not a very organized person): Post a topic that says "coin purse swap" or something like that (or change the title of this one?) and put the basics in your post:
*what we're swapping,
*how you want people to send their info to you (e-mail or pm),
*what info you need (real name, address, e-mail address, usually),
*the deadline date for sign-up, and
*the deadline date for sending out (about two weeks after the sign-up deadline, usually, although longer is good, too!).
Then when everyone's signed up, usually the swap organizer will put a list up with the getcrafty names of everyone who's on board so people can doublecheck and make sure you got their info.
After the swap sign-up is over, the swap organizer e-mails (or pm's) each person the name and address of the person they're sending to, and sometimes list who's sending to who in the getcrafty topic as well.
Aaah, that was long, I'm sorry. I hope I covered everything, I suck at explaining stuff.
Man, I love swaps. And this one sounds very fun!

i really like this idea, but i'm new and i know on craftster.org, there's a requirement of a one month membership before participating in swaps. . . no idea what the requirements are here . . . besides, if the send out date is the end of may, i'm a bit out of time, now aren't i? however, this is a fantastic idea and hopefully its repeated so i can jump in on the fun. . . .

Has anyone else received theirs yet? I think it's safe to call flake on red.sugar.stars now. It's been three weeks. Which kind of makes this quote (from her "glitter" thread) pretty funny:
As far as this board goes, I can't stand the cliquishness of it and I will not be a part of it. This is a loss for you as you will lose an intelligent thoughtful poster as well as a good swap partner but I'm sure you're not intelligent enough to even figure that out.
Ahh, the ironing is delicious.
If anyone's received one from rss, I'll take it back, but as of today I officially give up on receiving anything from this swap.
eta: please, nobody give up on swaps based on this one semi-dud, I've participated in tons and this is the first one I've been flaked on!
eta (again): and I know this isn't a case of international mail slowness, because rss lives in the US. but I agree that international senders shouldn't get too worried too fast! :)

I haven't gotten mine either. Either the person sending to me is outside the US, or I've been flaked on. I sent TO red.sugar.stars, but I don't think we're receiving from the same person we sent to, are we?
Rocket Helene and I were swap partners and we sent a purse to each other. Tinstarmerchant/red.sugar.stars sent an email to me with Rocket Helene's name and address at the start of the swap.
I definitely think we were swapping with only one person. But I did notice that tinstarmerchant/red.sugar.stars posted two thank yous at the start of this thread. Perhaps some people doubled up if there was an uneven number of swap partners? Or perhaps some people were confused, and sent their purse to Tinstarmerchant, thinking she was responsible for passing them on?
Maybe the only solution is to post the name of the person you think you should be receiving a purse from. I'm sure no-one thinks we would want to embarrass anyone else - the person who hasn't sent your purse may simply not even realise that they are your swap partner, if there has been a mixup!
OK!
I've just re-read the thread and edited to add these comments:
It seems to me that moon_lemming and h pets360 may have both been partnered with tinstarmerchant/red.sugar.stars, and she is yet to send out her swaps. Selah, I can't help you !! :-) I can't work yours out - you might have to tell us who you think you are swapping with.
My guess is that red.sugar.stars is probably still visiting and reading the forums, without posting. Hopefully she will read this thread and help us to work out what is going on!
Selah, moon_lemming and hpets360 if no-one has posted you a coin purse and we haven't had any response in the thread by the end of April, I'd be more than happy to find you each a lovely coin purse from my local seaside art markets and send them to you! I'm sure any of us would be happy to do the same thing. Don't worry, it might take a little longer than you were expecting but you won't miss out!

Post Subject: some suggestions to getting thru that craft pile
... I keep reading these postings to keep me motivated to clean out. Clothes and shoes are easy to part with, it's the boxes and boxes and more boxes for craft and needlework supplies that I know I will never use in this life time. I know it would be better if they went to a home where they would actually be used, but it's so hard to evaluate what I will REALLY use and what I won't. Does anyone have any words of wisdom for a crafting packrat?
Diana - wow! You can get through the clothing and shoes fairly easily. That seems to be a big step (no pun intended). So count that as a blessing. (Think of all the freed area for craft supplies!).
Now - motivating to clean out craft supplies. I find it hard also. I have to look at it from 4 points:
1 - find someone else who appreciates your donations and can use them
not Goodwill - I found a local high school, a non profit youth org, and a fixed income quilter...two of three are donations and all are nice to do! I find it less painful to pack up fabric to donate if I know it goes to someone who appreciates it.
2 - get a visual of what your work area will look like when its more open and how much more creative you will feel without piles in every corner
A friend loaned me a book Where Women Create - wow would I like to be creating in those rooms! Check out your library - there are several books out on planning craft/sewing areas. Start visuallizing what it would be like and what you want at your finger tips. And BUY something PRETTY for the room. I found this great mini cigar box with 4 drawers that I want to put my ceramic button collection into....and its not HUGE but very decorative (has a great map with an old feel on the top...). So now I have to have a free surface to display it!
3 - Get yourself to USE WHAT YOU HAVE.
Its hard. I found a group that has been doing that for the month of April. The ones that stuck to it have completed some pretty awesome projects. Just think of the treasures you have been MEANING to get to and DO NOT BUY anthing for a month (and try to work on a project every day). That alone helps! They did some mail swaps...for things missing. And did allow a person to prep before the month started - stock up on some missing items for projects.
4 - FIND A BUDDY.
Yep this is what really works for me. I have a fellow silk ribboner friend whom I have been going to classes with for years. We live hundreds of miles apart but have both had enough with our messes to want to fix it. You do have to find someone at your level of clutter I think so you can confess it all. We email several times a week and when one of us flags the other is energetic so we keep each other moving! Oh and we send "CONFETTI" in a word document. (No clutter there!!! but still a celabration from one who understands).
Kathy
So - does that give you any tidbit that might work? Let me know!

Thanks so much for joining in- and I am so sorry to have missed some people who wanted to join in a bit late- I did not have internet access for a few days so missed you!
I am so excited to hear about what things people are getting! Hurrah for swaps and the great people on here!
