Post Subject: Im looking of information on old Brother Sewing machine
I have an old Brother sewing machine, model name is *Sister* I would guess this is from the 1930/40's. Its an old side motor single stitch black with gold leaf design and a tweed carry case. The problem is it isnt stitching correctly, or I don’t think it is. I would love to find out more about this machine. But most importantly , how to fix a problem with it.
The top thread doesn’t get sewn through the fabric, and the bobbin thread is just looped around the top thread. If you pull the top thread from the side, it will actually slide out of the looped bobbin thread. Visualize a garden hose out straight, with several equally spaced croquet hoops pushed over it. You can slide the garden hose right through all the croquet hoops. That’s what this is doing??
Don’t know much else about it, I just picked it up at St. Vincent Paul version of Goodwill in St. Louis Mo. I do know I love old machines , but I can never seem to get them to work correctly. I have a really nice old Precision ( made in Japan) side motor machine and I cant find a correct bobbin for it even though Ive purchased every kind available at 3 different sewing shops.
Any ideas on either one on either machine would be great!
Thanks
Daniel

I was looking at the Real Simple website which showed different gifts under $50, by recipient (moms; husbands, etc.) and some of the stuff they showed made me think, the craftistas on getcrafty make better stuff than that.
So....I'm starting a thread where folks who sell their crafted items (on etsy or elsewhere) can put in a plug.
Reply w/a short desc of the item(s), price, who may be a good recipient, url of where it can be purchased.
I'd much rather buy holiday gifts from the crafty folks here and I bet others would too!

Hello grrls!
I thought i would start a thread for Halloween recipies - sure it's been done before but it's always a good time.
Here's mine: Spider Leg Cookies.
Melt 1 pkg semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1 pkg butterscotch chips in a double boiler.
Mix in 1 pkg chinese noodles - these are the hard crunchy orange ones that are often served over chow-mein.
Drop teaspoon-ish amounts onto a cookie sheet covered with wax paper and let cool in fridge - the noodles give the look of spider's legs stuck together!
Can't wait to hear your gruesome recipies ...

Post Subject: Are you in NH/New England? Wanna share a market booth?
Hey all,
I am looking for booth sharing buddies for the South End Open Market in Boston. I have several dates I'll be selling there this summer/fall and would love to share space and meet other crafters in the area (see also my post about a meetup in the Anyone In Nashua/Manch?etc thread!). Check out the market here:
www.southendopenmarket.com
The basics are that the market is a neat outdoor market every Sunday through October, and a 10 x 10 booth costs $50 per date. It is aok to share a booth with other crafters, so you can see that sharing makes it very affordable. Plus it's really fun hanging out in the "tent city" and meeting other crafters and sellers and networking with new customers all day.
I went on Opening Weekend and it was awesome...
Message me if you're interested...thanks!

Hi All,
New here (as if post count didn't give that one away). Have seen comments about this site on Craftster, but never visited. I've been on that site for a few years (itscribe) and most often contribute by helping others to improve their crafty websites and give some suggestions on crochet every now and again. I hope to do that here too.
I love the Open Letter To... thread. Every forum should have one of those.
I am a reformed computer nerd and am now a website content writer by trade, love to craft (crochet, cross stitch, sew, quilt, and whatever else looks interesting), and have been craft-deprived working on my websites.
My latest site is CraftyTips.com an arts and crafts directory. It's only getting started, so I would like to invite you to take a look around. In exchange for a crafty tip, craft-related website owners can get backlinks to their site for free.
Regards,
michele

Post Subject: Mule Magazine. Inexpensive Advertising.
hi everyone,
i'm cross posting this thread. but it's totally justifiable. a great magazine has launched and needs much support. if you haven't heard about mule magazine yet, do check out the site and order yourself a copy of the premiere issue. http://www.mulemagazine.com
okay, here is the scoop. mule magazine is a collaborative experiment in publication design. it is an entirely student-made production with the goal to review current art, media and music and spread the good word about artists, everywhere. (an interesting tid-bit: venus zine started out as a student run zine, too...)
they are looking for advertisers for the next issue and heavily rely on advertising support to get the mag to publication. ad space starts at $20.00 (FULL COLOR). i'll be placing an ad with them. hope to see some others, too. you can also contact elizabeth tapp at eliza_tapp AT yahoo DOT com for more information.
the deadline for ad space in the december issue is october 31st.

Hey Demetri & Lance--
This is a non-mod question, but I thought I'd give it a go. Is it possible for you to tweak the color of the highlight in the forums?
For example, if I search for "swap ornaments," the first result is this thread. And instead of being highlighted, the words "swap" and "ornament" appear in white text throughout the thread, making odd gaps in the conversation.
Is this a setting on getcrafty or is it something to do with how I have my system colors set up?
Thanks for looking into this.
Cheers / Angelique

Post Subject: The Wiki
Hello Moderators!
So, you've probably seen the announcement about the forthcoming getcrafty wiki (hurrah). I think it is going to be really neat. It will be a separate page linked to getcrafty proper, and users will have the same login information so it shouldn't be annoying for anyone(this is for technical reasons i can't explain). Of course we can't launch without some testing, so please give it a look with your moderating eyes and make any comments, suggestions etc to this thread-- Dave and Demetri, our wonderful technical gurus behind this magical thing, will be checking to see how it goes.
The link to the wiki is:
http://www.getcrafty.com/wiki
You can look at it without logging in, but must log in to edit or add items. You are set up to log in with your getcrafty usernames and passwords-- please let us know if you have any trouble.
To find information on a topic, type in a search term. As you'll see, nothing will come up for most terms (because the community creates the information). When you type in a term and nothing comes up, you'll have the option to create a page for that term, so go crazy. You can also add or edit information to a page that already exists (I made one on Sergers, which I'm obsessed with but know relatively little about, so please edit away!).
I've played around with it a bit today, and I think it will be a fabulous resource once we get going, and if we can get the community excited about sharing their knowledge all in one place! If you have ideas about how to do that once we launch the wiki, please share those too!

Posted by artgeek on 2006-12-07 21:44:39
Post Subject: EOY Wrap-up & Suggestions
Hi. I was browsing the Mod forum and thought we needed a kind of round-up of ideas and some info about where we were on various changes to the forums. The following is the list I came up with, but I'd be grateful to hear other peoples' ideas/suggestions:
1. Reported Posts link
The green link that used to be at the bottom of every page is gone. What's up?
2. Reworking Community Announcements
In the fall, we discussed making the forum "Community Announcements & Suggestions" into two separate forums--one being a special announcement forum that only admins, editors, and mods could post to (but users could reply to those posts), one being for community suggestions about the site. I thought agreement had been made that these changes were good, we just needed Demetri to make the changes and the editors to announce them. What's the status on this? Do we still want to do this? Could it be achieved early 2007?
3. Search terms highlight unreadable
I made a post about this back in September, and we learned changes would have to be made to the stylesheet. Any progress on this or an idea of when it could be completed?
4. Spam prevention
We discussed deleting user accounts with URLs in the profile, but no posts and no login for the last six months. Was this ever done? We also talked about instituting a rule that users had to be around for a month or make a certain number of posts before a URL could be included in their profile. What's the status of this?
5. Blog tags
Demetri was thinking of doing this, but only got feedback from me. Has it been scrapped? What other things couldd we do to improve the blog section? (I previously suggested being able to friend or bookmark other users to keep track of their blogs better.)
6. Swap Feedback system
Some users had requested this, and we provided Demetri with some feedback on what the system would require and introduced him to swap lingo (eg, "flakers" ;). Any progress on this front? Anything mods or users can do to assist in moving this project forward?
7. Deleting blog entries
We discovered only admins can delete offensive/inappopriate blog entries and uploads to the picture section, and Demetri suggested extending the ability to mods. Any progress on this front?
8. Mod contact info
I was thinking recently (as part of the liquid embroidery debacle), it might be good if the mods were able to contact each other easily if/when they wanted to communicate about something going on on GC. To that end, I'm posting a new thread with my contact info (e-mail, plus IM); if other mods want to join in, that would be great.

View entire thread: speaking of jewelry making:
Posted by Craftasaurus Rex on 2006-08-07 17:24:54
Post Subject: speaking of jewelry making:
I'm conflicted on something. Well, two things, actually:
1. When I was younger and starting to play with beads, I took the fishing line from my fishing rod which have never been used, and made jewelry with it. Now that I work in a bead store and I've read a ton of beading magazines / books, it says that monofilament always gets brittle and breaks and is generally a bad thing to put beads on.
I still have bracelets that I made with fishing line when I was 11 (I'm 23 now), and they're not brittle, they haven't broken, and I can wear them when I go swimming.
So I ask: why is everyone so anti-monofilament?
2. When I make necklaces that are mostly seed beads (size 11, size 8), and only a few larger glass / semi-precious stones, should I be feeling antsy that I put them on thread and not on beading wire? When I first started using beading wire, I put everything on it. But now I'm realizing that somethings are simply overkill to put on beading wire.
The thread I use C-lon, which is kind of like Nymo, but I find it doesn't fray as much as nymo. I double it, of course, and I use clamshells (knot cups) at the end of the necklace to attach my clasp. I have a necklace that I made 2 years ago that I put on thread, and it hasn't broken / stretched yet. and I sometimes forgot to take it off when I go swimming.
My question is: Can I sell these necklaces that I put on thread in good conscience? Even though I've never had any problems with the thread, I want to make sure that if someone buys a necklace from me that it won't break under normal wear. Maybe I should consider using Power-Pro, or Fireline, or some other kind of heavy-duty thread that's cheaper than beading wire, more expensive than normal beading thread, but seems to have a higher tensile strength?

How about this:
Hello,

i only use nylon thread, and i stretch and wax it. it *will* eventually break on an item that is worn every day without removal. if the wearer removes their jewelry when they swim or bathe, it will last a lot longer, even more so if they don't wear it every day and/or it doesnt get sweaty. if you tell your customers that, you are being responsible. nylon thread does not last forever, but if you treat it well, it will last longer than the person who buys the piece.
i don't use metal findings, so i don't know anything about clamshells, crimps, or using beading wire.
i learned how to do beadwork from my mom, who was the only employee of a very well known maker of art jewelry, so i don't use a lot of the techniques that many people do. i have only had one necklace break, and it was one that i wore every day, all day, without taking off once, for several years.

generally you don't use knots for clothing sewing, just do a couple of closely spaced backstitches at the beginning and end of the thread the idea is that knots cause more wear and end up breaking the thread.
if you want to make a knot, just use a regular half-knot for the beginning of the thread. when you get to the end, make a tiny stitch and put the needle through the loop before you pull it tight.

Post Subject: Weird sewing machine problem.
I'm a total newbie when it comes to using my sewing machine. I bought it used from someone who showed me the basics for using it, but I don't feel comfortable calling her to ask for help, and I don't have a manual.
So here's the problem--my bobbin ran out of thread, so I took it out and re-wound it. I thought I did a nice job--it seemed like the thread was nice and even. But now that I try to sew with it, I'm getting TONS of extra thread on the back. I don't know how else to explain it, but there's something like 10 times as much thread on the back and it just sort of hangs off. Does that make sense? And it's only on the back. On the top part it looks normal.
I'm thinking it must have something to do with the bobbin, but I can't figure out what I did wrong.
I just now had a thought. Maybe I wound the thread in the wrong direction? Could that be it?

jesus, find a new tailor. anyone who couldn't fix that shouldn't be billing their sewing services.
just buy a spool of elastic thread at the fabric store (at Jo-Ann it's sold in blister-packs with the rest of the prepackaged elastic) and thread a blunt needle with it. run the elastic through the ridges of stitching thread, following the path of the original elastic. secure the elastic at the beginning of the row by tying a knot in it, or knotting it to the next elastic thread so it can't pull out. after you've replaced a whole piece of elastic, try on the dress on and tighten the new elastic until it fits right (not too tight, not too loose) and then secure the end of the elastic.

It seems like from the sounds of it that your tension on the bobbin isn't tight enough?... Can you set the top thread tension and bobbin tension separatly? Sounds like the bobbin needs to be tighter...Or the top thread tension is too tight. Also, I have an older(60's) Kenmore,I had some tenion problems with while trying to get the hang of it, it was a little curved peg that is on the bobbin holder that the thread needs to be on the other side of.
I would call the woman you got it from and ask her if she knows. She will like the fact that it is being used!:) It may be something she had run into with it and knows the fasted way to deal with the problem.

Hi, I''m new to this site. I have a really stupid question, what kind of knot would I make at the end of a peice of sewing thread? My grandma taught me to sew but I really didn''t pay close attention to how to tie off the thread. I know, that was stupid of me, but hey, I was only 6 yrs. old when she taught me. Please, can somebody help me with this?

View entire thread: Ads in the Blogs...
Posted by artgeek on 2006-12-13 09:45:30
Post Subject:
The blogvertisements also bother me because:
1. It's a blatant misuse of the blogs. The first point on the Community Guidelines states:
Please do not use your blog as an advertising tool. Even if your company is super-bitchen crafty-tastic, the blogs are meant to build community, not businesses.
However, the community guidelines are not often referenced (I don't know if they're listed as part of the sign-up process, it's been so long since I joined), and the page is out of date and therefore seems less relevant.
2. It makes reading the blogs page kind of frustrating. Since the blogs page is pretty much the best way to read blogs, the ads bring down the whole purpose/system of having blogs.
3. We, as getcrafty, already provide many ways for users to advertise their businesses:
- URL in profile and WWW button at the end of each post
- sig lines
- Girls Gone Crafty forum, which the other mods have pretty much admitted has been given up to just listing businesses (of the 50 threads on the front page, only 12 don't have AD in front of them)
I'm almost certain it's not worth the effort to go back and delete previous posts (unless, maybe, there's a way for Demetri to search the database for blogs with only one post?), but if Christy and the other mods think it's worthwhile to create a better policy about this and Demetri were able to give the mods power to delete blog posts, I think we could greatly improve the blog feature.
I would recommend creating an announcement thread in Community Announcements stating the ways getcrafty supports crafty businesses, but reiterating that adverts are not the purpose of the blogs. Mods could then delete inappropriate blog posts from here on out and send a PM to users explaining why this was done; to that end, we could also develop a blurb mods could use for this purpose, including a link to the community announcement and/or the guidelines.
As part of this effort, I would also recommend updating the community guidelines with the new info about you and Christy, plus the new mods. I'd hate to be linking people to that page with out of date info.

Hello ladies, I'm in a jam and I'm sure I must just be missing something since I've never used an embroidery machine before. I just got a new Singer XL 6000 and I've used the sewing machine part just fine, but now I want to try to embroider, I've got the base on fine and I see the embroidery jazz on the computer screen, but when I try to fill an empty bobbin (special) with thread via the continuous winding mechanism, the machine keeps telling me there is no thread on the spool. But it's brand new 90 bobbin thread, I don't know what to do, I can't do anything until I figure this out, please help! Thank you ahead of time...

Now that I'm about 75% done with my cross stitch giraffe, I discover that I used the wrong thread for one of the colors, switching "light old gold" with what should have been used as "dark old gold" - so things are darker than they should be. I'm really not interested in ripping the stitches out, I doubt I even could at this point. What can I do?
Just making them both switch doesn't seem right, it's got gentle shadings that would end up looking ridiculous. But I doubt very much there's a DMC color for "darker old gold" out there.
If you've got one of those cool thread charts like my mom has, here's the numbers for everything I've explained, in case you can recommend a color to substitute:
676 - "light old gold"
729 - "medium old gold"
680 - "dark old gold" - which was used in the "light old gold" spots.
Other gold/brown colors used:
434, 801, 3371, 310, 745
I can scan it if that would help :)

Definitely knitted, I think entrelac ends up more diamond like, and that's sort of leaf shaped. Or maybe not. There are at least three different kinds of yarn, a more thread like one, a slightly fuzzy one, and a somewhat less thread like one. I don't know if they're stitched individually, but I can't imagine that make something so time consuming. I tried to find something on knitty that's similar, but alas, I am lazy. Embroidery floss will work fine, but other yarns and threads will too.
For ease of practice, take a full skein of embroidery thread. Take a short length of thread and tie a knot around the skein at the dead center.
Now, have another length of floss or thread or contrasting fiber and about a quarter inch down from the fold, wrap the new piece around tightly. Keep going around until you have a small band of wrapped area. Tuck your ends under the wrap.
Snip all the threads free, then snip to even the cut ends up.
Use the original knot as your anchor, or replace it with a jump ring or however you want to attach the tassel.
If you need a shorter length tassel, you could just cut them shorter, or make a shorter skein.
You'll find some other yarns will weigh less than the cotton floss, so you might want to experiment with the right look and heft, and figure in the amount of movement.
You can put a few strands of other colors in the tassel, or add some mylar threads as well.

http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushipin2.jpg
Make yourself some delicious sushi pin cushions. Chopsticks at the ready.
Instructions
-----------------------------
You will need:
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/youneed.jpg
- Felt (in various colours)
- Thread (in matching colours)
- Foam (for stuffing)
- Needle
- Scissors
- Paper (for templates)
- Compass or something circular to draw round.
- Pencil
To make kalamaki sushi:
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi1.jpg
Draw out a circle in the size that you want your sushi to be. Draw out a long strip in the height you want your sushi to be.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi2.jpg
Cut the templates and fold the strip around the circle. Cut off any length that is not needed on the strip.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi3.jpg
Using the templates draw out two circles and one strip on to white felt.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi4.jpg
Cut out the felt shapes.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi5.jpg
Using thread that matches the colour tack one circle to the strip.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi6.jpg
Using hemming stitch sew the two pieces together.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi7.jpg
Sew up the side.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi8.jpg
Find a piece of foam that will fill the cup you have just made.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi9.jpg
Now attach the second circle and sew that to the cup.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi10.jpg
You will end up with this.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/sushi11.jpg
Now all you need to do is decorate it.
To make this fish sushi:
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/fish1.jpg
Take a square of white felt and some pieces of foam.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/fish2.jpg
Fold the felt over making sure it fits around the foam.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/fish3.jpg
Stitch the felt in place and using a hemming stitch sew the felt up the side.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/fish4.jpg
When you get to the edge, fold in the sides and sew it in place. Repeat this for both ends.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/fish5.jpg
You will be left with something that looks like this.
http://www.catmorley.com/photos/crafty/sushipincushion/fish6.jpg
Decorate it with other bits of felt to make it look like sushi. I made a little fish out of pink felt

Unfortunately I think that the wiki is designed to be editable by everyone- that said, you do have to log in with your getcrafty login, and our post screening moderation allows us to delete members whose first posts on the site are ads-- perhaps we can ask Dave to fix wiki editing so that you can only edit if you've posted in the forums (and had that post approved) at least once. Making the wiki more "exclusive" I think is against the point of how a wiki works, as I understand them?
GGC seems like dead space to me, which makes me sad, since so many crafty people are entrepreneurs and we do want to buy from each other, and get business advice from each other. I really feel like the feedback from members and moderators saying "I never read this forum" is saying that in its current form it needs to go.
While I am not a big fan of rules and "don'ts" it does seem to me that a new, more focused business/crafty consumer forum and more strict stance against advertisements of any kind in the forums is one answer that could work. (only one answer, and I'm all ears for better ones!)
In this scenario we:
* keep the Crafty Business Links thread and instead of "banning" crafty people whose first visit here is a promotional one (or being harsh with people whose second post is an advertisement for their business), delete any post that is just a plug for a crafty business and pm them to ask them nicely to move it to the "crafty business links" thread.
People will try to advertise, and that is understandable. We just want to be very clear everywhere we can be about where it is appropriate-- the answer will be that it is not appropriate in most of the site, and the only appropriate place for it is in the "Crafty Business Links" thread.
And i agree with Angelique on the necessity for threads in the theoretical crafty business section to have details about *specific* feedback the poster is looking for on their website or products. That sounds very fair, and like a good way to keep any new forum from becoming overrun with thinly veiled ads. Though it does put an onus on all the moderators to police it, and if that is a problem do speak out!

Nancy,
That sounds like a great idea. I think it will be nice to know that information has gone through some sort of gatekeeper process. I also like the idea of keeping the crafty business links, perhaps in a wiki or something like that?
Because the wiki can be edited by anybody, I worry about opening it up to this kind of advertising. Not only will spammers use the space, but those with few scruples might mess with a competitor crafter's URL or something.
I think it's a good idea to keep the crafty business links thread, just because it allows people to post about their businesses. Honestly, I don't read through the thread because it's so huge, but I expect others have some use for it. I'm much more likely to buy from someone's shop via their etsy link or a blog posting.
One quick question about the new crafty business forum that's been suggested: I love the idea of the forum going back to GGC's roots and being a place for the self-employed, those with home-based businesses, or craft fair regulars to give and get advice. I do, however, see a potential for abuse with people posting something like this:
Hey, guys! Check out my new web site. Any comments?
www.some-crafty-girls-stuff.com
I think helping our members build great web sites to promote themselves and their crafts is important, but this sort of post just gets around what we don't want the new forum to be.
I'd like to suggest that such threads be deleted and that mods contact the original posters and ask them to repost their thread with greater detail about their web site, what their concerns are, etc. Basically, what specific areas of their web site do they want people to evaluate? So, while the above post would be inapporpriate, a post like this would be acceptable:
Hey, guys! I've just revamped my web site (www.some-crafty-girls-stuff.com) and wanted your opinions. How do the pages look on your various monitors? Is the new navigation system clear and user-friendly? Finally, I'm trying to take better pictures of my wares. Can some of you look at the enlarged photos and offer advice about things I can continue to work on/tweak? Thanks in advance!
What's everyone else's thoughts on this?

I would use fabric the same thickness or at least strength as the denim, cut strips the width you need plus seam allowances (maybe 1/2"?). So, if you want to add 3" all around, you need 2.5" wide strips - 3 divided by 2 plus 1/2 plus 1/2. Sew the strips right sides together into long strips. Insert by pinning right side of back of leg to right side of long strip, then sew. The final seams are done with jeans inside out. I would use a strong denim needle and strong thread. I would also experiment with the thread tension before going all the way. Also, don't forget to pre-shrink your patchwork fabric and press as you go along.
Or, you could hold out for another few months and maybe you won't need to alter!

Hello! :-)
I'm new to these forums and was hoping to take advantage of the wisdom of all you lovely crafty types.
I inherited a rather antiquated Singer (259) a while back and it has been sitting in my hall acting as an obstacle ever since. There was no instruction manual with it sadly. I would love to use it and start doing all sorts of fun sewing projects.
The main problem is that I have no idea how to thread the bobbin, nor how to make sure the thread on the outside is set up correctly. *scratches head*
If you can offer any assistance, I would be ever so grateful.
Many thanks

Best bet is to make your own. Buy a sewing box if you wish. There are pretty and sturdy wooden ones with cushioned tops and maybe a few dividers inside.
If you buy the prepackaged bits of thread and needles and scissors, thimble, tape measure, and a few odd buttons, the quality is usually not there and the variety is not tailored to your needs. They may also work out to be more expensive in the long run. Probably fine if you are just needing a quick kit to keep in your desk at work or something, though.
Decide what you want or need and then buy each thing separately. For instance, although I like and own several traditional thimbles, I never use them. I have used my leather thimble on occasion. I like a retractable tape measure. Glass head pins. Prefer Gutermann threads. Gingher scissors. And I would never be without stitch witchery. You may have other ideas.
If you sew very little and by hand, you'll want needles, thread and scissors. The rest is a matter of choice.

I have an old Brother sewing machine model name is *Sister*
Any ideas on either one?
Thanks
Daniel

I think the tech stuff boils down to a couple of categories.
1. Things that are broken.
2. Things a user doesn't know how to do.
Anything that falls into category 1 should be directed to me or Dave. The category 2 issues would hopefully be handled by our Moderators or Senior community members and possibly be entered into the FAQ – which I didn’t know we had until just now.
I think if someone sends a PM asking how to accomplish something it should be answered in a thread, if it hasn’t already.
If something is broken please let me know right away either through PM or emailing me at dkaravas@pointofimpact.com or both.

tigertail is actually a brand of beading wire, like SoftFlex, Soft Touch, Beadalon, Acculon, C-Flex, etc. Beading wire is made up of numerous smaller threads of steel, which are coiled together (like a rope) and normally coated in nylon. Make sure the wire has a high thread count (49 is the highest), because the more number of threads, the more flexible the wire = nicer drape, less brittle. Although for some projects the low thread counts work well (certain types of bead weaving with beading wire for example).
Personally, my favorite brand of beading wire is C-Flex. The nylon coating on the outside of the wire is really thin, which means the wire is really really flexible. It's not widely available, but you can get it from Caravan beads in Portland Maine. They also have a website: www.caravanbeads.com

Post Subject: Help! Antique Singer Sewing Machine Problems!!
Hello,
I hope you can help, I have a beautiful antique sewing machine that seems to be giving up on me...
My boyfriend had it serviced for my birthday last february and seemded to be fine for a while, but now whenever I sew the thread pulls really tight and snaps, or doesn't sew at all. I've tryed playing with the tension but it seems too tight or too loose. Where am I going wrong?
Em-lou xxx
P.S. I'm a complete novice, had to teach myself to thread it out of a book, but a friends checked it and she says its right...

Post Subject: felted hot water bottle covers..
I just made my first felted project ever!! I bought a striped 100 percent wool sweater at the thrift store the other day for $3.... I threw it in the wash on hot...then put it in the dryer... It felted enought that it didn't fray when I cut into it... I cut off the cuff...then sewed that onto the top of a rectangle..so the neck of the bottle would be covered.. I used a zigzag stitch on the neck..and stretched as I sewed so the bottle would fit in... On the straight sides I just used a straight stitch as it doesn't need to stretch..and zig zag uses more thread...It turned out great! I will try to post a picture later... anyway I am so inspired that I want to try making some more projects..felted wool is such a great medium.... the difficulty level would be about the same as fleece..and the end project looks quite high end... YAAA one project start to finish..about 30 minutes>>> now I want to try refashioning some sweaters... I love the sweaters on anthroplogie.com... anyone have some good felted wool sites to check out.. Last months Martha magazine had some felted wool projects..so maybe I will look there...

I can't help you, but you may want to check out the show and it's website The Screen Savers. It's a nightly show on g4techtv and I know they have had calls in the past about optimizing for search engines and they told the caller they would post more info on the site. It's a great show, and not just because my tv boyfriend is on it ;)
*ETA* I found this thread about the topic on their boards.

Does this seem to be a random thing?
If it happens when you start to sew, after the machine has been idle a day or two, it may be this: the machine has been oiled too much and maybe with something other than real sewing machine oil. The excess runs down and piles up someplace in the path of the bobbin thread. When you start up, the bobbin thread "cleans" the gunk out of its way.
If this is a possibility, you need to take apart everything you can get at in your machine and clean off all the oil and gunk you can find. Use non-linty cloth, maybe supplemented by soft wood pieces - like old fashioned Q-tips with the cotton removed. Then oil the machine with sewing machine oil. Sew with no thread on paper towel to get rid of excess. Let is sit for a few hours and sew again on a paper towel, this time with some thread you'll never use again.
When you're not using the machine, leave a scrap of fabric under the presser foot. Watch and see if anything runs down to it.
If you can't solve it, maybe you can figure out when it happens. When it's due, sew on a paper towel until it's gone.
Good luck!
LRS

Post Subject: problem with my sewing machine: bobbin thread not picking up
if anyone can help me, i'd be forever grateful!
I have a Singer 132 and the bobbin thread is no longer joining with the top thread. The shuttle turns as I bring the needle down to "pick up" the bobbin thread, but it does not actually pick up the thread. Any suggestions?

I think it depends on what kind of cover and what kind of binding you want.
Under the "Craft Up" Forum heading there is a post about making a journal, you could use those tips, and instead of putting in blank pages, print the poetry you want to include, or use blank pages and write the poetry in.
Also somewhere there is a thread about coptic binding that may have interesting tips for you.
This is a thread from craftster about using a real hardcover book cover and making a new book out of it.
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=6bc6e49040763885b0bc239fe7fd9f55&topic=6496.0
Here is another craftster link about keeping a real book intact, but pasting new paper over the existing pages.

Good luck!
(I've been making journals so I have alot of these link handy right now)

Was it a reply or a new thread? I believe you can only post a poll as a new thread. I just did a test one and it worked. You fill out your question and at least two options for answers and then "submit."
*ETA* I moved this to another board, where these sorts of questions usually go.

I had this problem, too. You probably also have trouble with broken bobbin thread. I found that the bobbin holder has a tension adjustment--- a small screw on the device that holds bobbin in place. Once I corrected that, I didn't have the oil on my bobbin thread anymore. Now, I have a problem when I reverse the direction with too much bobbin is released and loops of thread. So, could be that I gave my bobbin too much freedom and still need to adjust that tension back a bit.

I usually wrap the thread around a jump ring a few time, put it through the last couple of beads, tie a knot, put beading glue on the knot, and push the knot into a bead hole. I think that it's easier to knot thread to jump rings, then just attach the ring to the clasp. Plus, some clasps have sharp edges that will eat through your thread.

you could use a strip of bias tape or just a folded piece of fabric to thread through the concho slots, then sew the fabric or bias tape to the costume. it's kind of hard to reach behind the concho with the needle, but it's do-able.
you could also attach them with velcro, if you want to be able to remove them for washing, but you'd have to make sure the velcro would be strong enough.

Basically new users can make a post or reply to a thread but their first post has to be approved by a moderator or administrator. Once approved it'll be visible to the community and every post that user makes will be visible.
They'll be told after their post that the post needs to be approved first.
Also we'll be adding a check box to the reply form and new topic form that the user will have to check off indicating that they agree with the getcrafty terms of use.
The check box is only there to thwart spam bots.

I read it while I was on vacation in Italy a few years ago. I actually really liked it--I didn't see it on the other thread. Maybe I liked it because I was on vacation and it was a fairly quick read but it kept me interested. Why did you think it was silly? As it's been a few years I don't know if I'll remember much though . . .

Post Subject: Machine for years but don''t know how to use aching to learn
Hi
I have a sewing machine for tbe last 20 years, never used once.
I love to sew and I always did little things by hand because I don''t know how to thread and I am unable to find the manual.
I am retiring soon and wanted to volunteer. It probably will take few times to learn how to use my machine. I live in Chattanooga, TN. Can anyone tell me if there is a volunteer org and may be I can learn how to use my machine and contribute by becoming a volunteer in my spare time.
Thanks
Judy

I just started making these again, I made one a few years ago, but found a thread about them on craftster, which prompted me to make another one.
Here's the thread:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=895318927a730e34d9dd1fb2e3c29f45&topic=23222.0
Here's a link that tells you how to make a ball of "yarn" from grocery bags:
http://crochet.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.marloscrochetcorner.com%2FPlastic%2520Bag%2520tote.html
I read that it's really hard to knit with them, so it's probably easier to learn some basic crochet. I think there's a short little lesson in that craftster thread.
Good luck, the bags are pretty neat!

Hi, I've been lurking for two days now, but I had to register when I saw this thread. ;)
I'd be happy to pay for shipping, and I love deep colors (reds, blues, purples, greens, browns) and multicolored yarns. I also plan on trying felting soon, so if there is any non-acrylic, I'd be especially excited to see that, but any type will be geat.
Just let me know what account to send the paypal payment to, and I'll PM you my address.
Thanks!!!

Post Subject: NYC/Tri-State quilters, designers who sew
Hi Craftistas,
My friend Dan, an interior designer, has a client who wants to commission 3 quilts made from Marimekko dresses from the 60s and 70s. The designs would be modern and funky. Machine-quilting is preferable because, well, they'd like them done by Christmas. Since my sewing skills are severely lacking, I offered to open it up to the Get Crafty community and he thought that was wonderful idea.
I'll answer as many questions as I can in this thread, but I have no money details except to say that you would be paid. If you are interested, PM me and I'll pass your info along.
Cheers,
Leigh
