Our daughter did this too at 20 months. She's been in our room in the playpen for about a month and a half. I'm trying to transition her into the toddler bed.

My daughter never did that, thank goodness, but I did put her in a toddler bed when she turned 2, so maybe it's time for your girl. And I recommend putting the gate at her door so she can't wander around the entire upstairs. Or if you own the house, cut the door in half and shut just the bottom.

Congratulations! As far as toys go, right now, our toddler is into cars, books, those noisy popcorn popper toys that you push around, and the little beady roller coaster things. IKEA has great little wooden toys and finger puppets and stuff that LOOKS cute and keeps him completely entertained.
As far as nightlights go, I don't think they're necessary. When the lights are on at our house, he just gets the idea that it's time to play. Not so much what you need in the middle of the night, ya know?
And I wouldn't bother with a toddler bed. The smallness doesn't really have any benefits, and they'll grow out of it too quickly for it to be worth it. Just get a twin that's low to the floor. We actually just kept the mattress on the floor until he got used to sleeping without crib walls. I don't think he ever fell out anyhow, but just to be safe...

My DD is 23 months old and we just moved her to a toddler bed about 2 months ago since she shares a room with the rest of us (DH,DS who is 4 and myself) a gate at the door was impractical. We have a baby lock door knob thing on the inside of the door (adults can open it easily, bigger kids can get it to with a little practice) There is also a gate at the top of the stairs. That one is added caution. I don't want my 4 year old son comign down the steps in the dark either (a 6 year old friend can open the gate so yopur older daughter should still be ok with that) As for the climbing over the gate, well my 4 year old did it once and the baby can't do it, gates are taller (at least the one we got) and there is nothing she can stand on to get enough height to get her leg over. But if there is a bit of a hall way before the steps you could always put the gate there so if your monkey did manage to get over it would be to land on the floor and not fall down the steps.
Good luck Toddlers are tough but worth every moment :)
