Post Subject: Calling ALL designers, stylists! SWAP meet, NLP!
please repost. Your friends will really thank you for it.
ATTN: hip, young, fashion savvy designers, stylists, wardrobe people...
Hello!
Next Saturday, May 29th at Le Chic Boutique (6432 Santa Monica Blvd. @ Cole) we are having our first event! I know this isn't a lot of time to prepare, but we are too excited to wait! We are hoping to make this a monthly event with rotating designers, so lets start this off right!
Space is limited so hurry and sign up to be considered. We are looking for
young, hip, fashion forward individuals who have designs to sell. Jewelry
designers, vintage buyers/sellers, stylists with inventory are welcome as
well. This is going to be a great event, at a great space, with music,
refreshments and of course awesome designs by awesome people.
Forty dollars buys you a space at the sale. (Main area Approx. 16' wide X 36' long, plus extra small side area, 14' celings) The size of your space will be determined once all designers are selected. Again, there is VERY limited space, so please email me ONLY if you are SERIOUS about this. $40 gets you a space, and the money is to be paid BEFORE the day of the event to make sure your spot is secured. You can pay in cash if you visit Apollo Starr at the store (6432 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles, CA. 90038, call 323-461-STAR) You can charge whatever you like for your designs, and all the money is yours to keep! If you need to rent a table, or a rolling rack, there is a rental place next door, that charges about $5-10, you can email me for details about rentals. Otherwise, you must supply your own fixtures. Also, the sale will run from 10-6pm, on Saturday, so be prepared to work it!
So please, if you have a website, or some pictures of your work, email them
to me at once to be considered. We are trying to create a similar style/feel to that of Le Chic Boutique. 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, retro, young, funky, hip,
indie, urban, underground, chic, hipster, mod, etc. type designs. When emailing pictures, remember to keep them small, and virus free. Please also include a detailed description of your items/style of your designs. Again, SPACE IS LIMITED so please email me soon. We have to get the ball rolling, the sale is NEXT SATURDAY!
In addition, please let me know approximately how much space you will need.
For example, I know jewelry designers will need much less space than
clothing designers. Clothing designers are encouraged to keep designs to
under 2 rolling racks per person, and jewelry designers could possibly share a
table to cut costs and save space.
This is a great opportunity for new/up and coming/ young designers to get their designs out to the people! If all goes well this will be a huge success and will continue on a montly basis!
so get going!
spread the good word!

I'm contacting the business and organizations that hold the rights (for certain artwork and logos) to ask for permission to reproduce their designs for the purpose of selling my crafts. I've only had one decline, the others have not responded.
I'm wondering if anyone else has received permission in this way?
Am I wasting my precious crafting time?
I could design my own faux vintage art...but they wouldn't be reproductions, which is the market I'm tyring to tap into!

I accidentally bought the wrong size of spiral coil and now I have a box of 100 black 1" coils sitting in my house mocking me endlessly. I put them up on etsy, but I don't think a lot of people search for commercial supplies like that on there. These work really well for making journals, photo albums, or books using old vintage books for the covers! If you know someone who is into bookmaking, pass this along to them because it really is a good deal. Anything to get them out of my house!

Well, I've decided to hit it small and start selling my felt crafts (iPod cozies, change purses, pins/jewelry, scarves) and vamped-up vintage finds online, my motivation being that I want to donate a portion of profits to charity (not exactly planning to make big bucks here). Anyhow, I wanted to ask ye successful gals some questions.
-How do I find a market? The girls at school love my stuff, but that doesn't mean that it will appeal to everyone.
-How should I have customers pay? I was thinking paypal and checks, but....
-If I don't make much $, what must I report to the gov't? (live in US)
Thank you sososososososo much.

Jessica and I have recently launched the online incarnation of Miss Chief Productions. Here is the latest blurb of what we are all about:
Erin Wommack and Jessica Manack fine-tuned their collecting and collaging skills as college roommates in Roanoke, VA. Misschiefshop.com is the new showcase for their creations, from buttons to stationery to knits, and a rotating rack of thrift-store gems. Miss Chief's offerings include accessories and utilitarian items created from vintage finds, often one-of-a-kind...and affordable! Irreverent and irresistible, they bridge the gap between fine art and the art of the everyday.
Please check it out! We are putting the finishing touches on the website and are adding more lovely things every day. Ka-pow! Any suggestions would be helpful as well!
best, erin

Alright, to be honest, I'm not much of a shoe fanatic. I actually have little dress shoes. I'm not much of a vintage/goth kinda girl either...but yeah, three pairs of shoes for 7 dollars, brand new? DAMMMNNN!!!!
I'm a happy camper. I stumbled into a goodwill in a nearby town, it had nothing too promising. All the shoes were half off, and I'm not much of a 'used shoe' shopper. I found these though, that caught my eye, and BAM! They were cheap, and brand new.
I dunno, this must be some serious good karma or something.

Post Subject: Ever had lace reconstructed?
I bought a vintage 50's party dress off e-bay. It's amazing and one-of-a-kind, but had some damage when I bought it: a few odd stains and some holes in the underarm lace. Plus it was pretty dingy. So I took it to the drycleaners and paid a lot of money to have it wet-cleaned and signed the waiver that said I know it might fall aprt and all that. Well, I go and pick it up today and there is some good news and bad news. The good news is that all the spots came out and so did the dirt so it's about four shades lighter. Also it doesn't smell like basement anymore, which is extremely satisfying. The bad news is that the cleaning totally ate the lace on the bodice. I guess the dirt was what was holding it together all these years! I would like to get it reconstructed, but am afraid that it's going to cost more than I could afford? Can anyone offer any insight about this process or kow how much it costs? Thanks!

Post Subject: Book Review: Beadalicious by Sonya Nimri
As both a jewelry designer and a collector of vintage jewelry, I love Sonya Nimri's fun and simple approach to DIY jewelry design in her new book, Beadalicious. She encourages her readers to recycle old jewelry into something fresh and new in their own style. Sonya arms them with the know-how to complete every project in the book and includes a brief education on beads, tools, jewelry findings and best of all, techniques for jewelry construction. Jewelry styles range from funky to minimalist and the simple instructions allow for beginners to complete any of the projects. My favorite designs are the "Bohemian Wrapsody Ring" and "Amber Drops" earrings. Infused with a sense of whimsy, many projects in the book offer related side bars with recipes for things like "Queen Bee Soap" and "Moroccan Mint Tea". There is also an "Extra Goodies" section where you can find instructions to make things like a headband made out of buttons or your own romantic beaded hair comb. This book and the fun projects inside will make gifting to your favorite people a snap!

Post Subject: AD: Julie's Jangles jewelry
Hi everyone!
I've been crafting for years now, but recently discovered my love of jewelry design, and I've run away with it! I use mostly vintage components, like pendants, charms, and beads, to create fun, pretty jewelry with a retro twist.
I just got my website up and running and want to get the word out. I am still working out some technical issues, ie. getting brighter, clearer pictures. Also, although I love the look of my website, I designed it on the iWeb program (for Macs), and can't integrate a shopping cart function. Therefore, I've set it up so the "buy" button e-mails me with the item the customer wants to buy, to which I reply with a Paypal invoice. The customer can then proceed to pay with credit card via Paypal. This isn't a favorable way for me be set up, but I really wanted to get my jewelry out there so I can sell some things and put money into a better website. I'm going to be doing craft fairs this summer, also.
Any feedback would be welcome and appreciated, be it on my jewelry and the site!

Post Subject: Ladyfest Ottawa presents a holiday craft sale
Mark your calendars!
Ladyfest Ottawa is pleased to present our holiday craftsale on Saturday Dec 4th at Club SAW/SAW Gallery (67 Nicholas) from 10am to 5pm.
Following the success of our previous craft we decided it was high time to put on a Holiday sale.
This isn't your grandma's craftsale. We will have a wide selection of fun, edgy, punky, unique, handmade wares. In the past we've had handmade and reconstructed clothing, handbags, accessories, hand silkscreened t-shirts scarves and other clothings. Buttons, music, zines, toilet seat covers and light switch plates with vintage graphics, jewellery, stuffed animals, bubble wands, photography, bakesale items, and even underwear printed with canadian heroes (- because every girl needs a pair of laura secord briefs!). This sale will feature the many of the above and much much more.
Beyond the craftsale we will be raffling off donations from our super talented crafters and locally owned businesses, we'll have music, cider, cookies and other treats for sale and even a gift wrapping station where people can get their purchases wrapped for them. So come on out and support local crafters and ladyfest while picking up affordable, unique and handmade gifts. Everybody wins!
We still have room for a few more crafters so if you are interested in selling your wares email Christina at ladyfest_ottawa_crafts@hotmail.com she'll give you all the details.
This craftsale is going to be amazing! We are open to crafters from out of town!

Post Subject: Acrylic Bubble Charms - DIY
Basic Tips for creating bubble charms:
Images:
I use laser printed images sized to fit inside the bubble.
When you are printing, use the high quality function in your printing preferences.
There are other places to get images such as magazines, books, stickers or search google images, then copy paste to a blank Word document, resize and print.
You can cut these images with scissors, but I recommend getting a circle punch – ¾” in diameter.
I have not tried inkjet images, it just occurred to me that the ink would probably run.
Bubble Domes:
My suggestion to you is getting your bubbles from a company called www.tapplastics.com.
They’re not cheap, but very high quality. You’ll want to buy the half dome ¾”.
Metal Blanks
I get them from www.fanicfuls.com, they also have them at www.frostcreekcharms.com. There is an Ebay seller who sells some cool blanks, too, vintagetreasurebyjudy. The blanks are ¾” in diameter.
Adhesives: (the biggest challenge)
E6000- my personal favorite. It holds like nothing else. The one gripe I have is that you have to practice getting the perfect amount. I use about a pea size drop, then smash your bubble over the image. Have a wet towel handy, because when it runs out the sides, you’re going to want to wipe it off. This also is a “practice makes perfect” maneuver.
Craft Goop- Works almost as well as E6000, but also messy and is not as strong.
Diamond Glaze –
I figured out that if you glue your dome to the image with diamond glaze first, let it dry and then glue that component to the blank with e6000, it seems to work wonderfully.
Let your charm dry at least 12 hours.
So- the steps are:
Get your image, cut it to fit the blank, glue the dome to the image with diamond glaze, use a pea drop on top of the image, then smash the bubble over it to get the air bubbles out. (you’ll be able to see them), then glue the whole thing onto the brass blank with E6000.
As far as the back of the charm, you can add a rhinestone, vintage buttons, a cabochon with E6000 adhesive… or nothing.
Good Luck.

Post Subject: Philly Moving Sale!
Hey all,
I'm moving from Philadelphia across the country at the end of January, so I am selling everything from my studio apartment. All items come from a smoke-free household with no pets. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera to post photos, so I've written detailed descriptions below.
*BED, $30 OBO: twin mattress & box spring. Approx 7 years old, so it's sunken in the middle. It would be perfect for a guest bed. I've covered the mattress & box spring in fabric along with 2 matching king-size pillows, so that it looks more like a couch - the fabric is velvety/velour and a deep red paisley-print, Moroccan style. However, if you don't like the fabric, it can be removed.
*RUG, $30 OBO: 4' x 6' shag rug, ivory/cream color. Less than a year old. I paid $50 for it originally.
*MIRROR, $20 OBO: Approx 2.5' x 4'. Can be mounted on wall. It's old, so the leafing around the edges is scratched off and parts of it are cloudy, but there are no cracks.
*BAR STOOLS, $15 OBO: 2 Franklin bar stools from IKEA (see link for photo); also, 1 backless bar stool with wooden legs & round, black seat. http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15564&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=11336&langId=-1&parentCats=15564*15654*16171
*SIDE TABLE, $12 OBO: INGO side table from IKEA (see link for photo). Stained a light cherry wood color. 23.4" x 11.75" (19-5/8" tall). http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15564&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=32441&langId=-1&parentCats=15564*15797*15800
*ARMCHAIR, $11 OBO: ivory, vinyl, vintage-style armchair. Has a large slash in seat. I cover it with a throw blanket and that works fine.
TRUNK / TOY CHEST, $7 OBO: APA storage box from IKEA (see link for photo) http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15567&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=47238&langId=-1&parentCats=15567*15661*16259
*CHAIR, $6 OBO: dark wood, 13" round seat
*BREAKFAST TRAY, $3 OBO: white BAGN bed tray from IKEA (see link for photo) http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10103&storeId=12&langId=-1&productId=11174
*OTHER HOUSEHOLD ITEMS: dishes, storage bins, candles, comforters, and more!
You will need to pick up items yourself. I live in Center City around 22nd & Walnut, and I'm in a 3rd floor walk-up (so, you will probably need to recruit friends to help carry heavier items out of apartment). Ideally, I would prefer that you not pick up items until Jan 14-Jan 29, since I'm in my place till Jan 31, but I'm totally flexible about that and am more than willing to work with you. Contact me so we can arrange a time for you to look at the items.
*EDITED to remove my contact info.*

Vintage means used, loved, and worn out. There are lots of ways you can try to achieve that look, but the easiest (and most fun) is to wear it until it becomes your favoritestest thing ever. I have lots of shirts like this that I wish I could reverse the aging process on, because I'm afraid they will evenutally fall apart.
Anyway, I hate brand new t-shirts too. As soon as I get them I wash them in HOTHOT water with lots of soap and scrub away. And then leave them to soak a bit. Rinse and repeat if necessary. Then dry the hell out of them.
There's no real way to do this without taking some color out. But less color=more "vintage"-looking anyway.

I wanted to do some "vintage" style necklaces...I should say vintage themed, as opposed to actually looking vintage. And I came up with these.
I used the easy cast resin, found some old photos from the 50's, and I think they turned out pretty cute. Granted, I am a total amateur with necklaces making, but I thought they turned out nice.

any ideas on how to transform a pair of vintage pants into a lower slung pant without cutting the waistband (because it has these groovy elastics built in the sides- i have never seen that and they are oh so comfy)?? i envision these pants being turned into a lower waist trouser pant that is wide though the leg.
i was thinking of opening up the crotch and replacing the zipper with a shorter one, then taking the extra fabric from the inside of the leg and sewing them back together.
any other ideas?
thanks

Hello Everyone...My name is Brigette and I recently created my website after noticing that I was doing quite well on Ebay. I am a lover of fashion and ALL things handcrafted and vintage. My site is just about done, but I was wondering if I could get some input on how it looks so far. Your critique is greatly appreciated! FYI: Bflyjunkie.com is filled with hancrafted, modern, and vintage clothing and accessories all for $20 or less. Oh, and feel free to take a quick look at my blog here at getcrafty.com too. It is the first one of many to come. I will start my journey through Grad School on the 29th of November while maintaining a full time job, playing soccer, and filling orders and what not for my new website. So please stayed tuned to all that is to come!

Are you looking to buy or sell? I think you might be wrong about eBay. If you are looking to sell and afraid of not getting top dollar, do a search and sort by highest price. Look at how they are marketed. Those auctions, if done well, can get very competitive! I have bid on a few. The ones where the items are tossed in a box and photographed, also not described too well, tend to sell lower.
But hey! Etsy has a category for vintage as well as craft supplies. It is cheap to list, so it's worth a shot, too!

If you want to dip your feet into ecommerce, then starting on auction sites like Ebay or Etsy will see you selling some of your crafts. From there you will learn how to sell, how to improve your selling techniques, dealing and forming relationships with customers etc.
If you want to create a business that will constantly generate you income, then a website is the way to go.
I started with Ebay in which I was a powerseller but it became to much and since then run my own website.
Both methods take equally as long to 'establish a full time income'. It depends on how you 'view' your business. Short term = auction sites, long term = your own website.
Hope this helps :)

Hi all. I've never posted here before but thought I'd throw out a question.
I've turned my freestanding garage into an office and assessment space but ran out of money before I got the floor done. So I painted it (plywood floor)a nice red and wanted to stencil it to look a little like vintage linoleum. Any sage advice? I couldn't really find any designs, but maybe I haven't looked hard enough. I did see a great random design on a linoleum floor on a web site. Any ideas or advice is appreciated. I'm clearly not a crafty person (YET!)
Thanks,
Leah

did I dream that there was a website where you could swap your craft UFO"s (un finished objects) for someone elses???? I thought I read it on here a few months ago, but I can not find it to save my soul....
If I did just dream it, I need to create that site!
Since my website is going down, I have a number of cut out purse pieces I need to get rid off...I don't want to make anymore purses right now, but can't throw them away either-most of them are cut out of vintage fabrics. IF I finished them, I can get $30-50 each...I have no time or space to keep finish or save the pieces...I have too many things to get rid of LOL.
So if anyone knows of where I can trade this stuff=lemme know!!!

Hi I am looking for miniature size bottle brush trees...anyone know an on line source for them?
The size I am looking for is between 1 and 2 inches probably...
Here is an example of some (these are 8 inches and more and too expensive and already decorated...so that takes them off my list!):

I hope someone can tell me where! Googled but I get all sorts of ebay auctions on VINTAGE ones...not what I want. Joanns has some in this size area...but again not what I want.
thanks

Posted by jmdandona on 2005-06-29 17:12:11
Post Subject: How to apply vintage (unpasted, not vinyl) wallpaper?
I have some lovely c. 1940s wallpaper, the kind that was not prepasted and is made from real paper (not vinyl). I also have a 1940s armoire that is a little flimsy--it was made mostly from paneling, not solid wood--and it also has some superficial water damage, so I have no qualms about painting it. I plan to paint it antique white and was thinking of pasting some of my vintage wallpaper on the inside. The texture of the inside is like the back of wood panelling--kind of rough. I'm not sure what kind of adhesive to use for the wallpaper--extra strength craft glue? Rubber cement? actual wallpaper paste? (the latter would be, I assume, most expensive, because these days it's a speciality item) I seem to remember seeing numerous articles in magazines like Martha Stewart Living etc. describing how to apply vintage wallpaper to boxes, furniture, etc. but I can't remember where/when I read them! Help!

THANK YOU! I did find a bag at Kmart so I will try the bleach. Hmm...wonder if I can then die them pink? I did find an ornament at Joanns too made of 6 white ones tied together around a Santa face...cut those off. So between the two and with your method of making them better I should have what I need. And its not too late - I tend to get all the parts as things go on sale, bag them with instructions so in the summer I can pull them out and make Xmas stuff. I was working on miniature winter scenes and needed trees...have everything else. Who knew trees were hard to find?
People always have great suggestions here.

Post Subject: Hi all! New member intro
Hello! My name's Charity and I'm from TN. I've read getcrafty for years but finally joined recently.
About me:
I'll be 22 on December 13th.
I'm short.
I have pretty eclectic tastes.
I currently live in a little white house on the edge of the woods, with my boyfriend, my mom, and a herd of housecats.
I'm the youngest of three girls and the only one with green eyes.
About my craftiness:
I love finding new uses for old stuff.
I have drawn since I could hold a pencil.
I love doing stuff with polymer clay lately, especially carving it.
I can kind of sew and I want to learn more but my machine needs a cleaning/tune up. It's a greenish 1960's Kenmore that I picked up at a Goodwill for $26 bucks. (I love it.)
I want to learn how to knit.
I used to be heavy into mail art and random mail stuff but lost touch with it when I got pretty busy this past year. But I'm slowly starting to get back into it.
About my other hobbies/interests:
Going to thrift shops.
Collecting bunches of stuff from elephant figurines to vintage books to colorful rocks.
Reading and bookcrossing.
Starting a craft business with my sister called Pancakes and Noodles! We have an etsy store for now.
Drinking tea, playing video games, playing with my cats, travelling everywhere I can go.

Hello fellow Craftistas,
I'm new to Fairfield County, CT and absolutely cannot find a decent fabric store. Most seem to be only upholstery or lousy apparel fabric. The kind of store I'm looking for would have reproduction fabrics, maybe some vintage stuff, unusual prints (like pinup girls, Asian prints...) and you want to spend hours there sifting through the bolts. Anyone? Anyone? I know I can buy online but IT'S NOT THE SAME! I need to touch it first (innocent innuendo). Any suggestions or guidance is much appreciated.

Post Subject: is this a bad idea? (wedding thing)
Hi everyone. Weddings are everywhere lately! Mine is in 1 1/2 weeks.
What do you think of this:
I was already married once a long time ago, one of those fast ones that was purely a learning experience and we both made it out okay. We eloped & did it at the courthouse so it was all really informal. But, one of my friends gave me this beautiful, vintage, handmade handkerchief that was my "something blue" and "something old" for the day.
It's so pretty. I haven't got any other "something blue" or "something old" this time around so I'm wondering if I should use it again, or if it's been tainted by having been used for the failed first wedding.
I guess only I can really decide that, but I'm still interested in the general concensus. I mean, maybe the whole old/borrowed/blue/new thing is kind of passe too?! I don't know.
If I really am going to follow this tradition, it occurs to me that I also don't have a "something borrowed" figured out. So if anybody has a different vintage hanky with blue on it that you want to lend me, let me know! That would solve this dilemma. I promise I'll give it back.
Thank you!
Heidi

Post Subject: My Craft Space
Well, I finally got around to setting up a proper craft space of my very own today. In our living room, we have a formica kitchen table that my husband uses for his modeling/miniatures hobby but he only uses half of it, so he asked me if I wanted to use the other half for my crafting, now that I'm putting together my Etsy shop. So I jumped on the chance. I have all my rubber stamps in a milk glass compote, pens and glue sticks in a milk glass tumbler, beads and charms in a mini apothecary jar, notions in a vintage zinc-top blue glass Ball jar, my soap making supplies in a vintage loaf pan, markers and miscellaneous items in a small wicker basket, and more markers and colored pencils in a cigar box. All nicely arranged around the perimeter of my work space. On the wall I posted a "crafts to do" and my Etsy inventory lists.
My next steps for my area are to make a jar shelf to hold little items, and a bulletin/magnet board so I can tack up bits of inspiration and papers. My craft books remain across the room on my bookshelf, and I have plastic shoe boxes of supplies I don't use very often, as well as a crate of speciality papers that are in our office/desk area still, but I find my new setup quite serviceable. And I christened it tonight be altering some glassware! Tomorrow will be jewelry-making day!
