Maybe one of the indie Tux places would have something a bit less traditional? Otherwise, I vote for a Vintage store. Definitely check out the pics of star-studded events. You can always print off a few pics of what your man has in mind and bring them along for inspiration.

Portland has some awesome places. There is a cool thrift/vintage store that has a lot of old craft supplies called Knittin' Kitten.
There is also Scrap, which has a lot of donated materials that you can buy for cheap prices.
If you like thrifting and have a couple hours to dig, the Goodwill outlet in Milwauke (17th & Ochoco) has $1/lb bins and lots of cool stuff.
The Fabric Depot is a really huge fabric place and has lots of good deals and cool fabrics, everything is almost always 30% off. Pretty good!
There are also a LOT of neat little stores and shops down on SE Hawthorne, Belmont & Division, as well as NE Alberta (the Alberta arts district)... plus delicious food everywhere including LOTS of vegetarian/vegan places.

If you're starting from Austin, and you want to do a little ring around the Texas area, you might want to try Denton or Dallas. I don't know much about the places to be in Dallas, but here are some ideas for Denton:
Sleeping Lizards (not a bookstore, but they are very nice and open to helping the craft scene) just featured in the Dallas Morning News along with the following 2 indepently owned shops...
Alter Ego- a vintage store owned by a craftista- she would be very interested in your designs and is also very nice
Slinky Whistle Bait- another vintage store owned by sisters that sells modern-but-vintagey things as well
Hastings
I could see your book fitting into any of these places even though they're not traditional venues... We have a comfy futon if you need a place to crash!

Every month I''ll go to a vintage store and find the neatest thing, then a month later cut it up into something amazing, just today I made a vintage dress into a purse.
Just a protip to new vintage shoppers: never put it on right when you get it, because skin infections are never fun, so wash it!
