Post Subject: Philly Moving Sale!
Hey all,
I'm moving from Philadelphia across the country at the end of January, so I am selling everything from my studio apartment. All items come from a smoke-free household with no pets. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera to post photos, so I've written detailed descriptions below.
*BED, $30 OBO: twin mattress & box spring. Approx 7 years old, so it's sunken in the middle. It would be perfect for a guest bed. I've covered the mattress & box spring in fabric along with 2 matching king-size pillows, so that it looks more like a couch - the fabric is velvety/velour and a deep red paisley-print, Moroccan style. However, if you don't like the fabric, it can be removed.
*RUG, $30 OBO: 4' x 6' shag rug, ivory/cream color. Less than a year old. I paid $50 for it originally.
*MIRROR, $20 OBO: Approx 2.5' x 4'. Can be mounted on wall. It's old, so the leafing around the edges is scratched off and parts of it are cloudy, but there are no cracks.
*BAR STOOLS, $15 OBO: 2 Franklin bar stools from IKEA (see link for photo); also, 1 backless bar stool with wooden legs & round, black seat. http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15564&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=11336&langId=-1&parentCats=15564*15654*16171
*SIDE TABLE, $12 OBO: INGO side table from IKEA (see link for photo). Stained a light cherry wood color. 23.4" x 11.75" (19-5/8" tall). http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15564&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=32441&langId=-1&parentCats=15564*15797*15800
*ARMCHAIR, $11 OBO: ivory, vinyl, vintage-style armchair. Has a large slash in seat. I cover it with a throw blanket and that works fine.
TRUNK / TOY CHEST, $7 OBO: APA storage box from IKEA (see link for photo) http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?topcategoryId=15567&catalogId=10103&storeId=12&productId=47238&langId=-1&parentCats=15567*15661*16259
*CHAIR, $6 OBO: dark wood, 13" round seat
*BREAKFAST TRAY, $3 OBO: white BAGN bed tray from IKEA (see link for photo) http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10103&storeId=12&langId=-1&productId=11174
*OTHER HOUSEHOLD ITEMS: dishes, storage bins, candles, comforters, and more!
You will need to pick up items yourself. I live in Center City around 22nd & Walnut, and I'm in a 3rd floor walk-up (so, you will probably need to recruit friends to help carry heavier items out of apartment). Ideally, I would prefer that you not pick up items until Jan 14-Jan 29, since I'm in my place till Jan 31, but I'm totally flexible about that and am more than willing to work with you. Contact me so we can arrange a time for you to look at the items.
*EDITED to remove my contact info.*

Post Subject: "Vintage" Necklaces...
I wanted to do some "vintage" style necklaces...I should say vintage themed, as opposed to actually looking vintage. And I came up with these.
I used the easy cast resin, found some old photos from the 50's, and I think they turned out pretty cute. Granted, I am a total amateur with necklaces making, but I thought they turned out nice.

I would be, too. My blog site is about vintage-style crafting and using thrift store items (and other low cost items) for decorating. (The link is below in my signature.)

I think making your dress into a Christening dress is a really good idea. My sister in law used her veil as a Christening dress for her first born.
Would it dye?? Then you could use the fabric for host of different things.
Also, I saw my old wedding dress in a magazine coupled with a little red cardigan. I couldn''t quite imagine wearing my dress for other things! But this magazine obviously could! It was a short, vintage style prom dress with lots of pretty lace and ribbon on the skirt.

Post Subject: Mom Seeks Crafty Blessing/Karma for Blossoming Craftista
My soon-to-be-fifteen year old daughter has recently gotten crafty. She is sewing her own halloween costume, crocheting handbags and scarves, and has decided she wants to be a fashion designer that designs clothes for women with real bodies (she's a size 11). I am going to buy her a used dressmaker's dummy for xmas and set her up with her own sewing box and fill it with tools and notions to get her started. This is where the women of this community come in.
I am a little goofy about my sewing box. My mother in law (now deceased) gave it to me when I was a young mother. After she died, I was given some notions that were in her sewing room; little strips that she had embellished with beading, ribbon, a few spools of thread. There's also a thimble from a close friend, some buttons from my some of my mom's projects, lace from my wedding dress. I have used some of these things but I like the idea of having them in there because I feel like there is a creative energy that has flown through all of us and I like the idea of having a part of these women 'around' for my projects. I would love for her to receive some tiny token and a word of inspiration from some of you. Please understand, I am not begging for handouts. I can go out and buy these things and will buy the basic stock. But if you'd like to send a couple of buttons, beads, stick pins, length of ribbon, fabric, anything and note to encourage her to be her wonderful craftista self, I think that would be the coolest thing ever! I'd like to wrap the envelopes and let her open them one at a time. A button from Seattle, ribbon from L.A, zipper from NY.....she'd have a cow. As a measure of good faith, I'd be willing to send a few blank embossed notecards as a thank you for any who participate.
Please let me know if you'd like to help out. Thanks so much!!
Edited to add: In case you might be curious, Sara will be 15 in March. She has been a vegetarian for two years, loves Disturbed, The Ramones, The Rolling STones, the Beatles, and the Sex Pistols. She plays guitar and bass. At one dance she wore a vinyl dress with combat boots and for another she wore an adorable vintage style dress with a bouffant hairdo and mary janes. My proudest moment was when at age ten, she petitioned the city council not to replace "Smoky the Bear", a poor, deceased animal cooped up in a cage in our city park. She spoke in front of a room full of people, including cameras and reporters. They did not replace the bear.

I used to looove trading spaces, but after awhile I found myself wanting to punch out the perky host lady, and figuerd I ought to turn it off.
Ha ha! I feel the same way. I can't stand her. I really couldn't stand most of the designers or their work, Vern Yip being the exception to that. It also seems that most of the people they have on the show are too normal, middle American type, to make it interesting to me, especially when nearly all the houses are very plain suburban style houses.
I really like Design on a Dime. The two design teams do such great work and are fun yet not annoying. I like how alot of their designs have a kind of vintage style. They are not to use color and be bold which is great. They have some interesting homeowners too. Oh and I also love that they are all filmed in L.A. because I discover all these great stores I should go to and also becuase I want them to do a room in my new house!
I also like Home to Go. Peter Fallico is so awesome. They do such sleek cool stuff. It's very Toronto (I think they are filmed there?)
These shows are not quite home decor shows but are similar and interesting noneless: Building Character, Restore America, If Walls Could Talk. I love HGTV!

i am married to the hub (just last september), have two cats (sweetheart and persephone) and two dogs (red and blue). we just bought our first home, it is a mint green 1920's bungalow with white trim!
i love tv, movies, tim burton (esp. nightmare before x-mas), vintage style barbie stuff, kitchy old kitchen things, oh, and did i mention tv? it's why i was a telecom major/drama minor. i am a video producer and editor at a soul sucking small company, but hopefully for not too much longer.
i love to cross stitch, work on the house, make purses, cook (that's a new one for me, i used to burn the hell outta every pan) and i basically will craft the hell outta all my x-mas gifts. jill of all trades perhaps. but i hate knitting because i have no patience - wish i did.
favorite foods: flan, cheese ravioli, maple sugar candy, fondue, chicken tikka masala, panang curry chicken, super crunch rolls, hot dogs, cheese.
