Post Subject: Wine Bags From Old Jeans
I have made many wine bags from old jeans and pants over the years. They are easy to make and if you attach the pocket (sew or glue) you have a spot for a note or a wine bottle opener. You can add patches, trim, ribbons, etc. They super cute with old cords.

Sorry the picture stinks!

Wine bottle boxes work as well. The ones I make are totes with needle rolls.
I've never seen a box for a single wine bottle - where do you find those?
Macy*s,Mervyns,Tj-Maxx,Joann Fabrics and Crafts,Michaels,Dollar Tree...even some grocery stores have them right there with the wine. You'd just have to drill a hole in one of those for your purpose!

Last time I was at Michaels, they had a whole bunch of them on sale really cheap.
Wine bottle tubes (that's what they're called, right? Tubes? Boxes? Cylinders? Cylindrical tubular boxes?) are so pretty - I love to look at them in stores but always think, I never give wine as a gift so I have no reason to buy them. What a great idea to use them for yarn! It would certainly look a lot neater than the plastic bags I usually end up stuffing my knitting projects in.

Post Subject: london fog drink with homemade vanilla syrup, yummy!
hi everyone!
i've just started making myself a little treat that is really big here right now. typically in a cafe it is a steamed milk with a shot of vanilla and a bag of earl grey tea.
but,
i am always looking for cheaper, local, and organic alternatives and so i've come up with this little recipe.
vanilla syrup (and other kinds) is impressive yet easy easy easy, and good for flavouring teas, coffees, hot chocolate, italian sodas, and cocktails.
vanilla syrup
boil 2 cups
pour over 2 cups sugar
stir until sugar has dissolved and put in a vanilla bean
wait until the whole thing has cooled to room temperature and store i the fridge. i like to use a cleaned out wine bottle and a reusable cork.
for the tea...
boil the kettle, pour over earl grey tea bag until your mug in 2/3 full. top up with milk (i prefer it with rice milk, but any will do).
alternatively, you can heat up the milk and pour it over the tea bag though i find that the flavour is much milder if there is no water involved. also worth trying is using boiled water and heated milk,
enjoy this warmer now if you, like me live where spring hasn't arrived.

Post Subject: *comes bearing gifts*
Hmmm...it's been a long while. Some of you might remember me as Jaz-o-matic but... *peers around*...most of you might not. I haven't forgotten these dear boards, though, just my password (ahem). I've recently discovered a few things this board can't do without.
Neat wine bottle lamps! Maybe more projects to come...?

And have you gals discovered...HYPERTUFA?? No need to stop at pots and grots!

Post Subject: Christmas Crafting
Helloo people... apologies if there are already threads like this, but I can't seem to find any!
Also dunno if this is the right forum for this post, but I'm sure the mods can move it if not...
I've done semi-crafty christmases before, but this year I'm trying to have as hand-made a christmas as possible.
This means I'm starting now! I'd never get everything finished otherwise.
so far i've made one of a pair of fingerless gloves (the lace-up ones from the Alterknits book)...
I've a long way to go! I'm planning on making:
A poodle wine-bottle cosy (from Erika Knight's New Knits)
Three pairs of baby/toddler slippers
Some notebooks
A customised tee
A knit doll... either Cap'n Jack Sparrow or Spike from Buffy.. Haven't decided yet!
Some scrappy sideways knit scarves
Possibly some other stuff too... aargh! I'm going to be busy!
What are your favourite crafty gifts to make?
What do you do when people don't appreciate handmade?
What are you making this year?
When do you start for christmas?

I got a new bag from LL Bean to haul all my crap for work; a laster level thing; 6 pairs of earrings my sister made; cash that i ended up using for new clothes; and tons of smaller gifts. Plus i got to go home and have my mother spoil me!
I made a lot of gifts this year: wine bottle incense burner for my sister; frosted glasses filled with candy for my sister; an amazing - i wanted to keep it!- clock for my mom; and ornaments that looked like their faces for two friends at work.
My boyfriend and i went to our respective families and didn't have time to do gifts before, so I'm still awaiting goodies from him. I got him a north face day pack with the water system. I wanted to go for something more "personal" but in the end, he needed something practical. Plus i couldn't think of anything else...

I mostly celebrate Hanukkah, but my dad isn't Jewish, so my sister and I do Xmas with him every year (the only good thing for me about growing up in an interfaith home was that once my parents split, there was none of that nasty fighting about who to spend Xmas/Hanukkah with).
So for Hanukkah, from mom, sis, and bf:
Ice tongs, wine decanter, wine bottle chiller (bf)
Thai cookbook with really nice pictures and subscription to Bon Appetit (yay!) (sister)
Black cashmere sweater, Le Crueset 5 qt. casserole dish, burgundy velvet gloves, belt, socks, and a great black Tahari suit (that she totally scored at TJ Maxx for mad cheap, I'm so proud!)(mom)
And Xmas, all from Dad, who is still trying to buy my love back since he disowned me for a few years after the divorce:
Black and pink PJs with matching slippers, Simpsons trivia calendar, Trivial Pursiut 90s edition, America: The book (woohoo!), the Far Side wall calendar, and....AN IPOD! The ipod was the only thing I actually asked for. And he's sending me the port thingy that you can use to hook up the ipod through the FM frequency to the stereo, I guess the store was out.
The best was that my mom, sister, and I celebrated make-up Hanukkah on Christams eve, so I got to eat latkes and roast chicken on Christmas Eve, then we tried to avoid all the Christmas holiday programming that took over the airwaves.

Post Subject: cork rudolf
We made these wine bottle cork reindeer back when I was a girl guide, and mine still hangs on my tree (it even made the trip cross country and cross border). although, if you make too many, people do start to ask questions ;-)
You use 5 corks for the body, neck, head and 2 legs, 3 chunks of cork for the ears and tail, some fabric for the saddle blanket, 2 google eyes, and a red fuzzy ball for the nose. Glue them together in the most convincingly reindeerish way, tie some fishing line around the base of the neck and voila! They're cute, yet suggestive of your culturedness (if the corks are from fancy wine of course!)
I guess I shouldn't use this for the ornament exchange now... : )
Have fun,
Bree
