Post Subject: gumdrop animals
Hullo! This is my first post to the forums. I hope I am doing this right!
I just wanted to share the fun I have had making gumdrop animals. I got the idea from Martha Stewart Kids magazine a year and 1/2 ago, the one where they had these gumdrop animals made into ornaments for a children's xmas tree.
Once I started making them I got really into it and made many kinds of animals. If you go to my profile you can see photos. My favourites are the cow, the pig, and the crab. And the duck of course! My daughter designed the bat and the bee.

Post Subject: merry xmas
I used to work with a guy who put the tubes on their side and used glue or epoxy(not sure) to glue them together into the shape of a xmas tree(think pyramid with a short trunk). He would then connect xmas lights to the back with a light in each tube(toward the back). He covered the outside with rows of garland and plugged it in and it made this kitchy xmas tree thing. My relatives loved it. I think you could make it nicer by using green garland or going with a theme; victorian, patriotic, whatever.

Post Subject: Uses for old wedding dresses
My wedding dress has been hanging around for 2 years. Since I'm 4'10", I doubt I could find many people it would fit, so I'm trying to figure out what to do with it.
I recently saw a magazine (Budget Living maybe?) where they turned the bottom of a wedding dress into a xmas tree skirt, it was kind of cute so I was thinking of doing that.
Has anyone done something creative with an old wedding dress?

Damn it, now I'm hungry.
We usually go to my mom's house (and take leftovers home for sandwiches, haha, we're so lazy), but this year we're going to FL to visit mr. lemming's parents. I'm baking an easy banana bread that I found in Real Simple to take as a hostess gift, but that's all for me this year.
Next year, fingers crossed, we'll be in a house of our own and can start our own family traditions. (Like taking out the xmas tree the day after Thanksgiving -- we did that when I was growing up and I'm very fond of that tradition.)

I put out the xmas decorations the other day, and saw the nutcracker last night. I'm definitely feeling more into the spirit. I say, go and see if your town has carolers, or the nutcracker showing. I love watching those kinds of things. especially the Christas Carol, because to me, they are what xmas is about.
I think my mom and I are going to make wreaths to hang up. We also make TONS of cookies to put on cookie plates and hand them out to all of our neighbors on xmas eve night. We go door to door.
Even people who can't eat wheat, we make special cookies just for them, so they don't feel left out.
I love the ornament collection. I have my own personal stash, and my own mini xmas tree to put them on. My parents saved the paper tree topper I made when I was in 4th grade, and I put that on the tree every year. I love bringing out my ornaments because some of them are very special to me. I have this glass reindeer one that my friend Anora gave to me when I was 4. She passed away a few years ago, so I always think of her when I pull it out, and smile. She was a very sweet old lady.
My post office has a thing where they put out free apple cider all this month.
I love drinking apple cider this time of year, so I buy apple juice and make my own at home. or even the packets from costco.

Post Subject: sparkly artwork
My grandma has a huge stash of sparkly costume jewelry. She made this beautiful organic plant like art piece. She hot glued the jewerly (usually with pins and such removed) to a velvet backing and then framed the piece with a nice vintage frame. Her jewelry flower plant was about 2' x 1.5'. I kept admiring it so much that finally we made a similar piece for me. Mine is Xmas themed so it is a Xmas tree with the branches delineated by the white rhinestone necklaces that are so ubiquitus. different earrings and such are the ornaments. A good rectangular brooch made the trunk. This was also hot glued onto a velvet backing. It is by far my favorite Xmas decoration. And a wonderful keepsake of my grandmother's. I would love to have a big stash of old sparkly jewelry of my own.

We call the remote the binky (as in pacifier).
Our family calls all Xmas tree toppers - germs because when I was a kid we had one of those spiky glass tree toppers and my mom thought it looked just like a certain germ under a microscope.
