I was wondering if someday we can add avatar images?

I noticed on the user profile there is a place and maybe I am dumb, but I didn't see anything in my profile preferances to add one...

I for one am not fond of avatars. They're fine when kept small (say, no more than an inch or so square), but so many people seem to end up abusing the privilege. A bunch of huge images end up cluttering the page, and the animated ones are especially distracting when you're trying to read.

I like the clean look of a forum without avatars—it's easier for me to "get to know" people through the content of their words, rather than associating them with a picture that may or may not have much to do with who they really are.

Just my 2˘.

Katrin, I agree. I think having Avatars would mess with the simple and soothing vibe on these boards.

I rather like avatars, when kept small and preferably not animated. I am used to recognizing a person through his/her avatar.

Well, I like them. I like seeing what people choose for pictures. But I agree the oversized or animated ones are very distracting. The clean look of boards is nice too.

If you guys don't like them that is fine. I just wanted to get the scoop.

sstars,

please don't think I was dissing your opinion - it's just a matter of preference and I wanted to weigh in but I can also see the good points of avatars too.

cheers, jen

i'm am also in the no avatar. that was a big part of what irks me about newglitter (though i went ahead and spent hours finding one i liked - figuring when in rome...). i feel like it would clutter things up, visually, and also, i kinda like not being able to see what people look like. don't get me wrong, there are some major cuties on these boards, but something about a words-only connection to someone is really special - without any visual judgement about style or whatever. hope that doesn't make me sound judgemental or petty. it's just one of those human nature things, i think.

I know exactly what you mean, and I agree. When the flaming started over at NewGlitter, it was a real cognitive dissonance to read some of those angry, judgmental posts with the authors' smiling happy avatars next to them. (And vice versa, and other examples as well.)

i'm a no picture gal myself. they are fun at first but then get a tad in the way. plus - the other day at work i was on another board and one of them had an animated graphic of two people "goin at it". i'm all for free love, but not while i'm at work! luckily i clicked off before any of my co-workers saw...now i'm paranoid to visit those boards at work, even if it is work related!

i really like just the text, it's so old school, ya know, like falling in love with a song and creating the imagery to match in your brain as opposed to seeing it in a video on tv...

I always get jealous of people who put their really pretty pictures of themselves up as avatars. I seriously get distracted and go "BUT GOD! She looks like Uma Thurman! I don't look like Uma Thurman!"

On the supernaturale boards, I have a picture of a piece of art, but I honestly couldn't imagine putitng my own face up. I like there being no pictures sometimes. It works for this board.

I always wondered what that meant! No opinion either way, just glad to know what it is. Guess I could've looked it up in the dictionary...duh...
