I am applying to Parsons for the 2006 school year (yes I am thinking way ahead). I would like to get a BFA in Fashion Design but the only way I could afford it is through financial aid and scholarships. I am nearly poor (my annual income for 2003 was about $10,000), I'm 'of color', and female. I'm also a small business owner and high school drop-out (but I got my GED). Is there anyone out there in a situation similar to this? It seems like there are a lot more oppurtunities for scholarships if you're female and also a minority. I would like to take advantage of them but I'm not sure where to start. It's not like I can go to my counselor at high school anymore, so I'm pretty clueless. Can anyone recommend specific scholarships to apply for or resources where I can find out more about scholarships?

I'm not in your situation, but I do work at a college...
Some places you might try-
Student Services office at Parsons, just call and ask for a brochure of their scholarship information. There are probably scholarships specifically for Parsons students.
Did you go thru a study program somewhere for your GED or did you just do it on your own? If you went thru a study program, call them, even if it's been a while, they will help you. I know for fact that alot of colleges offer scholarships if you had a high GED score.
Any local community college or university, go to their Student Services and act like you're thinking of going there and ask for scholarship info. They will give you stuff for their college, but it should also include other general scholarships.
Directly contact the local SBA and any "of color" organizations you can think of and ask if they know of any scholarships.
That ought to keep you busy for a bit, LOL. One of them ought to be a good resource for you... |

if you go to princetonreview.com they have all kinds of helpful things. set up a free account and you can use their scholarship search engine. Type in info about yourself and they'll show you scholarships according to your personal things, like clubs you're in, minority, stuff like that. They also have a financial aid calculator. I really recomend it. I'm a junior in high school and I'm in the proccess of finding schools and scholarships too. (if you don't already know what school you want, use the counselor-o-matic. what I do is I find one school I like with the counselor-o-matic and I go to collegeboard.com type it in and use like find, since princeton review doesn't have all colleges listed.) good luck! _________________ -Caitlin
