hi, i'm new. =)

i was wondering if anyone had any neat ideas on diy shelving for books for a small bedroom. i've recently acquired a lot of books and have no idea how to display them ... bookshelves are ok but i just wanted to try something a little more original.

Small bedroom and a lot of books? You almost have to go vertical. You can build your own adjustable shelving and allow space for oversized books and objet d'art. The uneven blocks of space keep it from getting monotonous. Take it all the way to the ceiling, or at least make use of the near ceiling space with something.

I once built a headboard that was all book shelves with a recess for large pillows, but the room had weird walls and cubbies anyway.

If you have a lot of interesting books, but don't have to access all of the all the time, stack them horizontally next to vertically arranged books.

You know those underbed storage boxes? Either the crappy cardboard or the plastic sweater or wrapping paper bins? Those work for book storage, too.

What about shadow box type shelving? You could vary the sizes and possibly paint different colors. You would need a stud finder to hang them but they end up looking pretty cool.

i agree-- you need to go vertical. try putting a bookshelf on another bookshelf (or a desk or maybe even a dresser). the ceiling's the limit (uh, you may need a step ladder i guess).

i think this may be my best bet. i like this idea a lot.

my room is shaped odd. i'm 5"6, and right about at my shoulders my walls start to angle up. i always compare the shape of my room to a barn.

i was thinking about just buying 2x4's and just randomly placing them around the room. but the shadow box idea has me thinkin'

thanks!
