We normally go see the fireworks at a family's house with lots of relatives, but this time we had our own little BBQ of our own. I think I liked it better this way! What did you do?

I earned about 100 dollars scraping plates for very rich people at a country club as they celebrated the fourth. After I was done, I saw the fireworks they had nearby for the rich people in the safety of the building, away from the smoke and the noise, and they were beautiful.

Then I ate a mean piece of Texas toast. All I gotta say is don't mess with Texas toast.

Terrible storms here, so even the people who intended to barbecue had to scrap it. Because the Pepsi 400 was at the race track, most people don't venture too far afield.

I stayed in after tooling around with my dog in the morning. I don't know if she was more freaked by the thunder or by the fireworks. My car and the driveway were covered with palm fronds and downed branches.

Having been in NYC and Boston for fireworks many times, and Philadelphia at the Bicentennial, local stuff just doesn't do much for me.

Ate hot dogs. We were going to see fireworks, but everything was rained out. We played Monopoly instead.

I spent my 4th of July at my boyfriend's house. His family had a little cookout and we watched [well, listened rather] to PBS. I ate lots of potato salad :P And had a fabulous fruity dessert! :)

We had a bunch of people over to cook-out and watch the final of the European Soccer Championships (Euro 2004). As it was Greece v Portugal, and it was taking place in Portugal, we had Greek and American food, Portugese wine, and American beer. And one of those jello flag cakes!

(Let's see how many countries we had represented - by our guests: USA, Scotland, France, South Africa, Hong Kong, and two others that I never figured out.)

After the game, which was shown live at 2:45 (our time), a few people stayed. When the sun went down, we lit sparklers, then went on our upper deck (it's on top of our screened-in porch) to try and see the city fireworks. We heard them - and saw some real ones from across the street. It was lots of fun!

cackalackie--(so nice to see you!)--what on earth does a jello flag cake look like?? How cool.

We cooked out at my sister's house with some friends, one of whom is soon to depart for a teaching assignment in Saipan, so there was a vague tropical theme. Everyone had a lot of beers and set off Crazy Eyeballs, Mammoth Smoke, and Small Bees (fireworks) in the middle of Aycock Street. I made a blueberry pie but the edge of the crust got a trifle too brown.

We flew home from vacation and I even forgot it was July 4th until we got on the plane and I was like, "Dude, why are all these people wearing American flags?" At which point my bf pointed out to me not only the date, but also the fact that I was wearing a red shirt with blue jeans and looked just like everyone else on the plane.

cackalackie, that sounded like a fun 4th!

On the other hand, I spent the weekend lugging heavy equipment around to film Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. Ah, good ol' Willie!

(Thanks, nice to see you too!) (And thanks, BumbleV!)

I thought everyone had seen this cake thing, as it was with the coupon inserts in the paper. You make some red jello, and when it's slightly jelled, add sliced strawberries and blueberries, then pour it into a rectangular dish that has been lined with 10 slices of pound cake. After it sets, you top it with a mixture of cream cheese, sugar, and cool whip (!), then you use sliced strawberries and blueberries to make it look like a flag! (This is what my daughter helped with!) It was almost trifle-like. The topping was the best. Ha! (I can't believe you were a stone's throw away.)

I went to see spiderman 2 at a drive-in, and it was fantastic! I have to admit, I felt weirdly guilty at not attending fireworks. But whatever, I got over it!
