Anybody know how to make your own scratch n sniff cards, but without coloring or altering the image? I've heard of using some water and Kool- Aid but that sounds lame. I've tried searching the web but haven't found anything useful.

Scratch and Sniff
1 part powdered Koolaid to 1 part warm water
Mix in small container, apply.

That's the only recipe I've come across. There must be some powdered essences or flavorings that are used in chocolate making that would be available to commercial confectioners. The thing is, Scratch and Sniffs have a nice texture over the scratch part. I don't know the chemistry of it but would suspect that it's crystals of the essential scent in a matrix of some kind.

For supermarket availability, I'd check other powdered drink mixes. Maybe pina colada powders or whatever. But I've never tried to make a perfume scratch and sniff. I would think the oils are too volatile and dissipate quickly.

Last I heard (maybe the technology has changed) scratch-n-sniff was made of microencapsulated fragrance - it was suspended in the microscopic holes of a foam-like base, which broke when you scratched them, releasing the scent.

Mello Smello (don't you love that name?) is a company that makes scratch-n-sniff products. I couldn't find any detailed information on their site about exactly how the stuff works, but it's kinda neat to look at anyway.
