so i was intending to dye a white dress periwinkle, but i could only get my hands on rit dye (liquid, not powder) in royal blue and wine. i was thinking of taking the royal blue and adding a little bit of the wine to make a blue-purple. if i just add a lot of water, will the dye weaken (and not work), or will it end up being the periwinkle i'd always dreamed of?

does anyone have any advice re: lightening dye colors?

Generally, you do lighter effects by shorter immersion times. Have your wet wrung out dress, dip it and swirl in the dye pot, pull out in minutes for a light dye, in hours for a deeper color.

I would just use a teensy bit of dye and then heat it for the recommended amount of time. I dye a LOT and that's what I do. I would make your dye bath and test it on a small scrap of fabric with the same content as the dress, then strengthen or weaken the dyebath until you're satisfied with the results.

Good luck!
