Today was my first day of work at "Captain Java", a coffee house combined with a "paint your own pottery" and mosaics studio. The bisque pieces and mosaic forms and tiles (etc), are high quality and so awesome!

The owner is very cool and gosh, I just feel so lucky to be working there! As some of you know, I own a DJ business. I do weddings, schools and other parties, but that is mostly weekend work and i've just been dying here in my studio from no people contact. I've gotten into a funk without face-to-face human contact and though I have tons of time down here to create, my funk causes creative blocks and I do nothing all day! I only work 4 hour shifts in the mornings at Captain Java, but that is just perfect.

I've always dreamed of having my own coffee shop with an artist studio, too. This just rocks. I've had a permanent smile on my face all day!

If you live in Indianapolis, please come up to Fishers on 116th street and say hi! I'll make you a yummy coffee or smoothie and you can paint some pottery or make a mosaic mirror!!!

*Jumps up and down for herself*

I also booked a wedding today and got into an art fair at a fall festival! Less than 3 weeks to prepare for the art fair, too! Wahoo! I am gonna be having fun this fall! LOL

Thanks for letting me brag!

I used to work at a daycamp in a place like that! Granted, I HATED my boss and was fired after a week, but still.

The concept is cool. We have one like that downtown (I just moved away for college). Except no coffee.

That rocks!
I love going to a place in SF that is an art gallery/coffee shop...now if I could only make my own art there too!

That sounds really fun. I've always wanted to work at a cafe, especially a cool, sort of offbeat, non-Starbucks one like you described.

Aw... congratulations!
And it's true they are very lucky to have someone who is happy to be working there. Work environment makes such a difference on the job you do. I'm looking for a job right now and it's so stressful, but it makes me glad to hear that the stars lined up just right for you. :)

Thanks for all the replies!!! I've worked 3 days this week(MWF). Today I had to be there at 6:15 AM. WOW! It's been awhile since i've had to get up that early to work.

I really do love this job! The owner is awesome and the customers have been nice and patient with the new girl.

She doesn't do any special "Ladies Night" or "Pajama Painting Parties" like some of the pottery only places do. She does host bday parties and bridal showers when people ask, but I would love to come up with ideas for fun theme parties to get more people in. Something like "Ladies Night", but since everyone does those, I would love to come up with other ideas.

What do your local shops do?

(may start another thread for this next week)
